I believed her. And then I spent the next forty-plus years paying in.

Now I am the one doing the math. And it is more complicated than she made it sound.

My husband has a federal pension. He does not have his own Social Security benefit. He receives widower’s benefits from a prior marriage. That means the standard “what should we do as a couple” framework does not apply to us. My timing decision is mine alone.

So I built the spreadsheet. I ran my projected benefit from 62 out to 90, because my mother is 90. And to 104, because that is how long my grandmother lived. I asked ChatGPT to pressure-test my thinking and help me organize the questions I needed answered. And then I sat with the one question that has been underneath all of it: what happens if the money is not there?

The projections about Social Security solvency are not hypothetical. They are in the Trustees’ annual reports. Congress has changed this program before. The 1983 amendments were significant. Another round of changes is not impossible.
