Our inaugural bonus segment comes from Daniel Libit’s recent podcast episode with Frank LoMonte, director of the Brechner Center for Freedom of Information at the University of Florida. LoMonte, a trained lawyer and former journalist, is arguably the country’s foremost expert on higher ed First Amendment and public disclosure issues . In this part of their discussion, LoMonte talks about the history and mystery of the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA, and how it has come to be used and misused to conceal public university records from the public.

Today, I wanted to bring you a conversation with two of my dear friends and former colleagues.

Many of you followed SB Nation’s college football coverage. Most of my friends that helped make that coverage were bought out. Without a home, they decided to make their own thing. So my buddies Richard Johnson, Jason Kirk, Spencer Hall, Tyson Whitting and Alex Kirshner are writing a really interesting book, called The Sinful Seven.

The Sinful Seven was a real college football group, but this book isn’t exactly a work of non-fiction. There’s a lot of stuff in there that is completely true. But it’s also a Western. There are some outlandish jokes. It’s…weird. But in a good way.

I’m no good at explaining this thing, so this conversation with Alex and Tyson talks about the craziness of college football history in the wide open 1950s, what exactly their project is, what they’ve learned, and more. I hope you enjoy it.

But it’s a bit jarring, I think, to drop in a 3,000 word essay in one of these newsletters. So for stories I want to dig into a little bit, I thought podcasting could be a fun format to experiment with.

The first podcast story covers an event that has fascinated me for a long time. Part of it is a theological angle, since it involves my church. Part of it is political, and part of it is because I think it’s one of the early examples of how a school’s response to a political event can explicitly shape the fortunes of their football program. Or hell, even the fortunes of neighboring programs.

The TL;DR of this story, called the Black 14, is that Wyoming booted 14 young men from their football program for having the audacity to ask to protest against racist religious doctrines of BYU’s sponsoring institution, the LDS church. How this came to be, how and why Wyoming responded, and what that meant for the church, and college football in the West, isn’t just an isolated story of 1960s upheaval, but also gives clues to how college football would react to protests in the future, and how, or if, anybody could possibly Stick to Sports.
