Who will rescue me from this body of death? Romans 7:25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

Christianity does not begin with self-confidence. It begins with honesty.

Before we can appreciate grace, we must recognize our need for rescue. We are not saved by trying harder, believing in ourselves, or cleaning ourselves up enough for God.

We are drowning sinners who need a Savior.

Jesus is not merely a life coach shouting advice from the shore. He enters the water to rescue us.

When someone is drowning, frantic effort cannot save them. They need help from outside themselves. In the same way, salvation comes only through Jesus Christ.

Through faith in Him, we receive forgiveness, a new heart, and the promise of a future without sin or suffering. One day the spiritual battle will finally end. Jesus has already won the victory.

Until then, we keep repenting, trusting, and clinging to Christ.

Application QuestionHave you truly surrendered your life to Jesus, or are you still trying to save yourself?

PrayerJesus, thank You for rescuing me when I could not rescue myself. Teach me to trust You fully and rest in the victory You have already won. They only open it when life falls apart.

But Scripture is not just emergency medicine. It is daily food.

You do not eat only when you are dying. You eat every day because food sustains your life. In the same way, God’s Word nourishes your soul and strengthens you for the spiritual battle.

The more you feed on Scripture, the more your appetite for God grows. As you meditate on His Word, your delight in Him deepens.

The Bible is also our sword in battle. A sword is useless if you never train with it, carry it, or learn how to use it. If we neglect God’s Word, we will not be prepared when temptation comes.

Scripture not only teaches us how to live; it also points us to Jesus from beginning to end. The law, the prophets, and the promises all lead us to Him.

Application QuestionAre you feeding on God’s Word consistently, or only turning to it during emergencies?

PrayerLord, give me a hunger for Your Word. For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it.”

The world says, Believe in yourself. Scripture says apart from Christ you can do nothing.

We may know what is right, but knowledge alone does not give us the power to obey. A dead phone may have amazing features, but without power it cannot function as designed. In the same way, we were never meant to live the Christian life in our own strength.

The problem is not merely lack of information. The problem is lack of spiritual power.

That is why we need Jesus to save us and the Holy Spirit to empower us. We need regeneration, not just motivation. We need new hearts, not better pep talks.

Galatians describes this as a war between the flesh and the Spirit. Every believer experiences this conflict. The presence of the battle does not mean you are abandoned by God. It means the Spirit is working within you.

Victory comes not through self-reliance but through dependence on Christ.

Application QuestionIn what area of your life are you relying more on willpower than on the power of God?

PrayerJesus, I confess that I cannot defeat sin on my own. We say things we regret. We explode in anger. We give in to temptation. Then afterward we wonder, Why did I do that?

Sin is often deeper than the behavior we can see. Anger may be rooted in pride. Anxiety may come from unbelief. Addiction may grow from hurt, fear, or a desire to escape.

Like an iceberg, most of the problem is beneath the surface. Like unhealthy roots produce unhealthy fruit, sinful roots produce sinful actions. Cutting off behavior without addressing the heart only leads to the same sin growing back again.

God does not just want behavior modification. He wants heart transformation.

Part of spiritual growth is learning to examine your heart through God’s Word, prayer, and honest community with other believers. We need people who can ask hard questions and help us see what we often miss ourselves.

Application QuestionWhat recurring sin in your life may point to a deeper heart issue underneath it?

PrayerFather, help me not only fight sinful actions but also uncover the sinful roots beneath them. Like an X-ray reveals broken bones, God’s Word reveals the condition of our hearts. The problem is not the law. The problem is our flesh.

Many people want spirituality without surrender. They want inspiration without obedience. But true spirituality is not avoiding God’s commands. The law is spiritual because it comes from God.

The battle is that even after coming to Christ, we still feel the pull of sin. We are bent toward selfishness, pride, lust, anger, fear, and unbelief. The Christian life is not pretending the battle is gone. It is fighting the battle with Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Scripture, and the church beside us.

No matter how bent out of shape you get, you can always return to Jesus. There is forgiveness at the cross and strength for the next step of obedience.

Application Question

Where do you most feel the pull of your sinful nature right now?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for showing me my sin so that I can run to Jesus for forgiveness and help. It is a light.

The law exposes what we would rather keep hidden. Pride, greed, envy, lust, bitterness, selfishness—sins that can stay concealed in the darkness are suddenly visible when the light of God’s Word shines on our hearts.

The sermon compared it to a dark restaurant. Everything can look clean and beautiful in dim lighting. But once the lights come on, the mess becomes obvious.

That can feel painful spiritually. We are no longer slaves to guilt, shame, or trying to earn God’s acceptance. We belong to Christ now.

And belonging to Jesus changes how we live. His commands lead to life, freedom, and joy because they are how we were created to live.

Everybody is drinking from some master. One produces death. One produces life.

Application Question: Are you treating Jesus only as Savior, or also as Lord over your life?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of eternal life. Help me live fully surrendered to You as my King. Teach me to walk daily in the freedom and grace You purchased for me. Amen.

Get full access to Josh at joshengen.substack.com/subscribe

Josh Engen

<itunes:author>Josh Engen</itunes:author><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>93</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://substackcdn.com/feed/podcast/9038684/post/197622121/7ebc69bb206ea8f36eb0856210b1cd92.jpg"/>

The Shame You Carry Doesn’t Have to Define You

The Shame You Carry Doesn’t Have to Define You

Thursday, May 21, 2026

Key Scripture (CSB) “I sought the LORD, and he answered me and rescued me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant with joy; their faces will never be ashamed.” — Psalm 34:4-5

As Christians, we often look back on old sins with regret and shame. We remember the rebellion, the selfishness, the damage we caused.

But Jesus not only took our sin to the cross — He also carried our shame. Because of Christ, we do not have to live condemned and defeated.

The fruit of sin is death. Shame. Bitterness. Addiction. But the fruit of following Jesus is holiness, joy, forgiveness, and eternal life.

When you look to Christ, you do not have to hide anymore. There is grace for your past and freedom for your future.

Application Question: Are you still carrying shame for sins Jesus has already forgiven?

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for taking my sin and shame upon Yourself. Jesus is powerful enough to free you from the sins that have defeated you over and over again.

The gospel is not behavior modification. Jesus gives new hearts. Through the Holy Spirit, God changes our desires from the inside out. We begin to obey from the heart because God is transforming us.

And once we are changed, we are called to help others follow Jesus too. We learn the truth, obey the truth, and pass the truth on to the next generation.

Application Question: Who has helped disciple you, and who are you helping follow Jesus?

Prayer: God, thank You for giving me a new heart through Christ. Love for God increases. Holiness grows stronger. Righteousness creates an upward spiral of sanctification.

Jesus frees us not only from the punishment of sin, but also from the power of sin. Anger controls you. Lust controls you. Fear controls you. The harder you pull, the more trapped you feel.

Many people think freedom means doing whatever they want. But Jesus teaches that everyone serves a master. Either sin rules your heart, or Christ does. When we continually obey sin, we are showing who we really serve.

Jesus did not die so we could stay trapped in old patterns. He came to set captives free. Real freedom is found in joyful obedience to Christ.

Application Question: What sin keeps trying to act like your master?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, show me where I am still obeying sin instead of obeying You. Freedom replaces secrecy, temptation loses strength, and over time you become more transparent, humble, and spiritually mature.

Marriage — you intentionally pray with your spouse once a week. Then it becomes more regular, communication improves, spiritual unity deepens, and your marriage grows stronger over time.

Parenting — you consistently disciple your children through simple Bible conversations. Years later, those small moments help build a culture of truth, prayer, and gospel-centered thinking in your home.

Generosity — you start giving generously even when it feels difficult. Over time, your grip on money weakens, your trust in God’s provision strengthens, and generosity becomes joyful rather than fearful.

Resisting temptation — you begin resisting small temptations immediately instead of entertaining them. That pattern builds spiritual strength, sharper discernment, and greater victory over larger temptations later.

Sharing your faith — you begin sharing your faith despite fear. Each conversation builds courage, dependence on the Spirit, and greater compassion for lost people.

Gratitude — you choose gratitude instead of constant complaining. Over time your perspective changes, joy increases, and you begin noticing God’s goodness everywhere.

Get full access to Josh at joshengen.substack.com/subscribe

Josh Engen

<itunes:author>Josh Engen</itunes:author><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>170</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://substackcdn.com/feed/podcast/9038684/post/197602137/7ebc69bb206ea8f36eb0856210b1cd92.jpg"/>
