In this July Sunday Bible study, we read John 11:1–57 through the lens of the Incarnation: the Word wrapped in flesh who enters friendship, grief, danger, and death. We begin by considering several ancient beliefs about what happens after death and how John moves the conversation away from abstract theories and toward the person of Jesus.

Together, we explore why divine delay can feel like absence without meaning abandonment, why Jesus’ knowledge that Lazarus will live does not cancel his compassion, and how the words “I am the resurrection and the life” move resurrection from a distant future event into the living presence of Christ.

We also consider the command to “unbind him, and let him go,” recognizing that the sign is not complete until Lazarus is free. The chapter then carries us into conflict, revealing how the gift of life can inspire faith while threatening systems built around fear, control, and self-protection.

John 11 shows us a God who does not remain distant from human suffering. God comes near enough to grieve, enters the human condition, and works to heal humanity from the inside.

In this episode, Rev. Felecia O’Neal explores the distinction between sacred sacrifice and subjugation through Jesus’ words in John 10 and his washing of the disciples’ feet in John 13.

Jesus kneels, but he does not disappear. He serves from secure identity, knowing where he has come from, where he is going, and what the Father has placed in his hands. His movement toward the disciples reveals what Rev. O’Neal calls the divine lean—the embodied orientation of divine love toward humanity.

The Word wrapped in flesh wraps himself again in a towel. Incarnation becomes posture: not a pose, performance, or display of humility, but love made visible through nearness, touch, service, truth, and chosen action.

This conversation examines holy agency—the freedom to offer ourselves in love without surrendering to human domination. It explores the difference between laying something down before God and having another person, system, or religious expectation take it from us and call the taking holy.

The episode also confronts the ways the cross has been misused to silence the vulnerable, excuse exploitation, and teach people that endurance is always the same as faithfulness. The cross reveals the depth of Christ’s love, but it must never become a tool for crucifying other people.

Along the way, we consider Peter’s resistance to receiving care, Judas’s presence at the table, the necessity of truthful love, and the kind of Christian community in which no one is permanently assigned to the basin or the chair.

Glory kneels, but glory never grovels.

Holy love can bend without becoming diminished, serve without disappearing, tell the truth without surrendering tenderness, and rise when the work of kneeling is complete.

The final word is not subjugation.

The final word is resurrection and life.
