Pittsburgh:“Jeet yet?”and chipped ham.

Minnesota:Hotdish.Bars.And an almost religious distinction between casserole and hotdish.

What sounds funny on the surface actually says a lot about working-class identity, immigration history, hospitality, regional pride, and the way communities hold onto culture through language.

The older I get, the more I realize dialect isn’t just about words.

It’s memory.It’s geography.It’s community.

And sometimes it’s somebody’s grandma trying to feed you before you even answer the question.

This week is:Pittsburgh’s “nebby” vs the Minnesota Nice phrase “that’s… interesting.”

Two ways of saying the same thing…just very differently.

In Pittsburgh, if you’re being too nosy, too involved, too in someone else’s business -you’re nebby.

Simple. Direct. No confusion.

In Minnesota, you’ll hear something like:“that’s… interesting.”

And it might sound polite, but it can mean:

* I disagree

* I don’t like this

* please stop talking

Same situation… just delivered differently.

Dialect and the unique story it tells is very intersting to me and I hope you continue to enjoy this series and I continue to build it out and go on another journey with you.

Two cities. Two vibes. Two completely different ways of saying… basically nothing and everything at the same time 😂

In Pittsburgh, “yinz” steps in where English falls short—a second-person plural that’s efficient, expressive, and full of identity. It’s not just a word… it’s culture.

Meanwhile in the Twin Cities, “ope” is doing emotional labor. It’s the reflex, the apology, the “lemme just sneak past ya real quick” all rolled into one tiny sound.

One solves grammar.

One solves social awkwardness.

Both are iconic.

So be honest…
