This is no ordinary episode. See, I knew Jason, but Jason didn’t know me, yet he agreed to meet me, a total stranger in the middle of a Melbourne laneway just so I could tell him to his face how much of an impact watching him speak had on me. It might be hard to believe, but this self-described once ‘quiet kid’ left his cosy teaching job back in Ireland to move out to Australia for a once in a lifetime experience, collectively known as a kind of right of passage for the Irish.

But make no mistake, behind his pleasant demeanour and comforting smile, Rob Hourigan is a wild man in the making! I mean, he moved to Australia, started out selling medicinal cannabis, survived a wild magpie attack, took up the terrifying art of stand-up comedy and hung out with a guy who goes by the name of ‘Snake Hunter’. It’s like something out of a movie!

But all jokes aside, it was a real pleasure to sit with Rob as he embarked on his final few months in Aus to indulge in a Portuguese Tart, a bag of Tato’s and a bit of craic in one of Melbourne’s most iconic laneways. If Rob taught me anything it’s not to underestimate yourself and how quickly your life can change if you’re willing to take chances.

The sheer audacity of casually hanging out with a snake handler is gloriously reckless.

Rob reflects on how comedy helped him navigate his move to Melbourne, where the lack of “begrudgery” (Ireland’s version of tall poppy syndrome) gave him the confidence to try stand-up. “I notice with Australians... they’re more inclined to be like, oh, good on you, kind of a thing”. This highlights the cultural freedom that can unlock personal growth in a new environment.

Dan joined me the week before Christmas in Melbourne’s Hosier Lane to record what was one of the more relaxed episodes of the year and our final episode for 2024.

Getting to know Dan, you get the sense that you’re sitting in front of a timid character with somewhat of a nervous energy at times, or maybe that’s what recording a podcast in a laneway does to people. But you also feel this side of Dan that’s a heart of gold, draped in humility. The kind that comes from following your heart and not quite knowing where it’s taking you or if you’ll ever “get to the finish”.

In this episode, I didn’t just get to know Dan, I got to like Dan, a guy who in his 40’s, still has aspirations, still gets that glint in his eye when he talks about the possibilities in life, and who’s greatest success will come when living true to himself.

Despite admitting to regrets and describing what it’s been like trying to forge his own path while living in his dad’s shadow, you can tell that Dan wholeheartedly appreciates the journey. But you get a sense that it’s a matter of time and a few risks that may need to be taken before this ticking time bomb of a comedy savage truly unleashes on the stand-up audiences around the world.

There were a few points that encapsulate the blend of humour, authenticity, and inspiration that characterise this episode, reflecting both the personal growth of comedians and the broader commentary on their craft:

* 😂 The Stranger - Lui and Dan humorously describe the isolation of editing as leading to sitting on one's hand to give "the stranger”, bringing a comedic aspect to their conversation.

* Process - Dan shares his dislike for the isolating nature of writing too much, preferring the social aspect of performing, which gives an authentic look into the life of a comedian beyond the stage.

In what at times felt like a genuine heart to heart, this Aussie Larakin from Frankston in Melbourne’s outer south east and I (a fellow south-eastern dirtbag) weaved in and out between Kaileb’s humble beginnings in the world of comedy, where he’ll no doubt continue to ride the highs and lows until he one day realises his dreams of becoming a globetrotting professional comedian, and some controversial social commentary around topics of mutual interest.

One of my favourite quotes from Kaileb was “What I’ve found is that there’s no growth without adversity”.

Despite my greatest intentions to avoid steering us toward political agenda on this podcast, Kaileb opened up about societies obsession what I’ve deemed as probably the greatest sickness of our time "‘cancel culture’ as being both lead and perpetuated by people with next to no tolerance for adversity. The reason we both find this to be a topic of such significant relevance is that the great art form of comedy, the greatest art form in the world in my humble opinion, with it’s incredible ability to breakdown barriers, transcend cultural differences and generally just bring people together, is right in the firing line of cancel culture as it pushes social boundaries.

All jokes aside, since our last chat in June of 2023, when Cam was approximately half-way through his epic Random-Tandem ride through the America’s, he has now completed that epic ride and at the time of writing is inching ever-closer to his homeland of Perth WA.

This is our third time chatting with Hamaima, and she’s become an important part of The Lui Diaz Podcast! But there was something different about this chat. As I enter a personal phase of opening up, being more forthcoming and candid and releasing toxic shame, I felt compelled not only share this platform with the wonderful Hamaima, but I felt safe and welcome to play devil’s advocate and probe into the personal philosophies that help her make sense of her existence here on planet earth.

As “out there” as one might feel Hamaima to be, those both educated and open-hearted enough will know that those philosophies aren’t all that far fetched, that those philosophies have elements that can be correlated almost exactly to the teachings of Christianity, Australian Indigenous Dreamtime stories, Native American stories, and more modern teachings like the teachings of Masaru Emoto of The Hidden Messages in Water - a New York Times best seller and the world renowned works of Dr. Joe Dispenza who specialises in the field of Quantum Physics.

In yet another episode where I get the great pleasure of reminding everyone there we’re on a giant rock floating in space, revolving around a giant ball of fire, Hamaima also once again reminds us that we are all on journey’s of remembering and that not on are we very welcome on this planet but we’re fulfilling our purpose just by being here.

The two South-Asian musical trailblazers will take us all the way back to the beginning of their 15-year journey as both collaborators and friends and give us a firm understanding of the depths reached in their creative partnership after having worked together, overcome obstacles and made magic over such a long period of time.

Making this magical album meant embracing the natural imperfections encountered while recording an independent album, taking their audience on a sonic journey filled with quirk and character, building replicas of ancient instruments from scratch and even the emergence of Natasha the rapper.

But beyond the production challenges and discoveries, we explore the personal, political, and social obstacles that had to be overcome. Add to that, not only was this album put together on a shoestring budget but the fact that this talented duo happen to be based on opposite sides of the globe, makes the completion of this album nothing short of an ordinary miracle.

Yes that’s right, I said explorer, but before I get to that here’s a little bit more about the episode.

Joining us from deep in the jungle of Costa Rica (well, not sure it was the jungle, but it sounds cool) where you’ll occasionally catch the ringing of crickets in the background of cams track, Cam takes us through is EPIC journey in which he’s riding his tandem bike from the Northern tip of North America (Prudhoe Bay, Alaska) to the Southern tip of South America (Ushuia, Argentina) with the intention of sharing the journey with a bunch of random strangers, namely anyone who decides to join him at any stage of the journey.

Epic bike ride huh!?

Yes it is. But what you’ll quickly learn is that this journey is about SO MUCH MORE than the bike. In what happens to be another episode where I can’t believe I get to talk such incredible humans and share their incredible insights with you all, you’ll catch us discussing not just the journey and the logistics of it in detail, but also:

* Why Cam decided to risk it all by inviting total strangers to join him

* The ways in which ceaseless acts of kindness continue to blow him away

But sure, what’s inspiring for some might only land on thought-provoking for others, but when Cata dives into the lost art of having hobbies and making friends in fun places, friends whose company we can enjoy perfectly well without discussion of careers or responsibilities, I’ll challenge any ‘grown-up’ out there not to think back to the ‘good old days’ and wonder how and when we made life so complicated.

But this episode is about so much more than just finding ourselves, it’s about finding our tribe, finding our communities, and the notion that communities of like-minded people that come together for the sheer enjoyment of an activity seem to be society’s last bastions for finding true encouragement, unconditional support and a feeling that I think all of us truly long for of feeling uplifted.

I first heard about Lucy a little while back when I watched a short documentary about her and Wombat’s adventures as part of the Gutsy Girls Film Tour, so on a personal note, it’s pretty surreal to have had the opportunity to chat with Lucy.

But meeting Lucy, I came to realise that what I considered to be an almighty privilege was something that she was all too happy to do.

Through a life in which Lucy has come to appreciate the power of inclusion and generosity by being on the giving and receiving end of both, it seems fitting that this journey of epic proportions has become one stitched together by countless beautiful micro interactions and the help and generosity of friends and strangers alike.

With that, Lucy’s passion for celebrating the wonderful people and indigenous cultures of South America and their different ways of living has become as vital a part of her motivations as the trek itself.
