That is not a conspiracy theory. It is the quiet new normal, confirmed by a recent Wall Street Journal investigation and the growing pile of shattered parents left wondering what happened to the child they raised.

According to the report, a rising number of therapists now treat family estrangement as a legitimate therapeutic goal rather than the tragic last resort it once was. Walk away. Block the number. Call it healing. The old model of repairing bonds has been shoved aside for a model that valorizes the permanent rupture.

One woman, Shoshana Rubli, followed the advice after only her second therapy session. The therapist had credentials. The argument came from authority. So she cut her mother off. Ten years later she realized the cost. Grandparents died. Other relatives turned on her. She had children of her own and finally saw that every parent is flawed. Only then did she pick up the phone. Her mother had waited the entire time.

This is not rare. Cornell sociologist Karl Pillemer’s research shows roughly 25 percent of Americans are estranged from a close relative at any given moment, and 10 percent are cut off from a parent or child. Those numbers are climbing as political and cultural fights intensify.

An April survey of about 7,000 estranged parents found that one-third believe their adult child’s therapist either recommended the cutoff or pushed them toward it, as detailed in both the New York Post and the original Journal piece.

Therapist William Doherty, who has spent decades studying when therapy actually harms people, puts it plainly. Cutting off a parent should be the tragic exception, not standard operating procedure. Yet the culture now treats every uncomfortable feeling as trauma and every disagreement as abuse. The solution on offer is not reconciliation or maturity. It is exit.

Social media poured gasoline on the fire. “No contact” has become a hashtag lifestyle. Estrangement coaches sell quizzes about “emotionally immature parents” and courses on how to cut the cord without guilt. Clients walk into therapy already convinced their parents are the problem and leave with professional affirmation. As Massachusetts therapist Peter Anderson observed, many of these patients are simply parroting what they absorbed online and looking for a credentialed adult to rubber-stamp the decision.

The political angle is impossible to miss. Young adults steeped in progressive ideology increasingly treat conservative or Christian parents as moral contaminants. Different views on marriage, gender, borders, or the last election are reframed as “harm.”

The therapist, trained in the same worldview, rarely challenges the framing. Instead of asking hard questions about the patient’s own responsibility or the full family story, the counselor takes the client’s narrative at face value and green-lights the rupture.

Daily Wire therapist Pamela Garfield-Jaeger, who has worked in the field for 25 years, has watched this pattern up close. She notes that graduate programs now emphasize critical theory, power dynamics, and identity politics more than the skills of reconciliation. Judeo-Christian assumptions about forgiveness, family duty, and personal accountability have been displaced. One training she attended treated voting for Donald Trump as evidence of cult membership. That is the water many therapists swim in.

Scripture does not leave us guessing about the importance of family bonds. “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise.” Those words from Ephesians were not written for a pre-modern world that somehow failed to understand trauma. They were written for every generation that would rather nurse grievances than do the harder work of love.

Critics of the new estrangement gospel point out the obvious. There is no solid evidence that cutting off family improves long-term mental health. Temporary relief is common. Chronic unhappiness and depression often follow. Pillemer calls it the “exiter cost.” You may also lose the very people who would have been your support when life gets hard. As Northwestern’s Jay Lebow notes, therapists sometimes encourage patients to sever their best remaining source of care while the real mental-health crisis goes untreated.

Real abuse exists. Physical violence, sexual violation, and sustained emotional cruelty can make distance necessary. No serious person denies that. What has changed is the threshold. Ordinary parental imperfections, political disagreement, and the messy reality of two imperfect humans sharing a bloodline are now pathologized as grounds for permanent exile.

The family is not a lifestyle accessory. It is the first institution God established and the one the state and the culture cannot replace. When therapists treat it as optional and social media treats it as optional and progressive ideology treats it as optional, the result is predictable: lonely adults, grieving parents, and a society that has forgotten how to live with people it did not choose.

If your leftist relative has gone silent, it may not be because you failed some new purity test. It may be because a therapist, steeped in the same ideology, told her that discarding you was the path to wellness. The bill for that advice is coming due, and it will be paid in regret, isolation, and the slow death of the family itself. As Matt Margolis noted, this trend is already reshaping American households one severed relationship at a time.

Paxton’s general election opponent, Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, raised more than $27 million in the first three months of 2026. Paxton raised $2.2 million in the same window. Talarico already leads Paxton by seven to eight points in head-to-head polling conducted by the University of Texas and the Texas Politics Project. Among Black voters, Talarico’s margin against Paxton sits at 56 points. Among Latino voters, 27. Democrats have not won a statewide race in Texas since 1994, but for the first time in three decades, the party believes the door is cracked open.

The race will not be decided by Paxton’s record, which is formidable, or by the impeachment circus of 2023, which Texans already rejected. It will be decided by whether Paxton can fill in the blanks on his opponent before Talarico’s donor army does it for him.

Most Texans have not met James Talarico yet. They will meet him on television in July, August, September, and October, on someone’s terms. Paxton’s only job between now and Labor Day is to make sure the Talarico voters see is the real one.

The Manufactured Image

Talarico is, on paper, the most dangerous candidate Texas Democrats could have nominated. He is 36, telegenic, soft-spoken, a former public school teacher, the grandson of a South Texas Baptist preacher, and currently a student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. His campaign hands out the word “seminarian” like a press pass. He preaches occasionally at his home congregation. He talks about Jesus on Joe Rogan. He went viral on Stephen Colbert. He brands his movement “The People vs. Ken Paxton” and frames himself as the reluctant pastor called away from the pulpit to challenge a corrupt system.

It is a beautifully constructed image, and it is largely synthetic. The seminary in question, Austin Presbyterian, is a mainline Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) institution whose course catalog features classes such as “Womanist and Feminist Readings of the New Testament,” “Theatre of the Oppressed,” and “Theological Ethics of Martin Luther King Jr.” Talarico’s personal pastor, Jim Rigby, was tried by the PCUSA in the 1990s for ordaining lesbian and gay clergy. The theology Talarico is being trained in is not eccentric. It is the standard product of liberal Protestant academia circa 1985, repackaged for TikTok and shipped in 2026.

What Talarico Actually Believes

The receipts are not buried. They are on tape, in his own voice, on platforms with millions of listeners.

On the floor of the Texas House in 2021, opposing a bill that protected girls’ sports, Talarico declared that “God is non-binary,” explaining that the Almighty is “both masculine and feminine and everything in between.” On Joe Rogan in July 2025, he argued the Bible is pro-abortion, citing the Annunciation as evidence that “God asks for Mary’s consent” before the Incarnation and concluding that “creation has to be done with consent.” Anyone with a King James Bible and three minutes can verify what the angel Gabriel actually said to Mary, which was not a question.

In an interview with New York Times columnist Ezra Klein, Talarico said, “I believe Christianity points to the truth. I also think other religions of love point to the same truth.” He compared world religions to different languages “circling the same truth,” and approvingly cited his boyhood pastor’s teaching that “religious symbols are like aspirin: in order to work, they have to dissolve.” That is not a footnote. That is a confession of pluralism, dressed in seminary tweed.

His political record matches the theology. In a 2020 social media post, Talarico wrote that “radicalized white men are the greatest domestic terrorist threat in our country.” He described racism as a “virus” spread by all white people regardless of whether they exhibit “symptoms.” In a 2023 sermon he insisted that “our trans community needs abortion care too.” In January 2026 he headlined a Stop ICE Rally in Texas, calling ICE a “secret police force” and demanding its leadership be impeached. He supports packing the Supreme Court. He opposes the Ten Commandments display law. And then in March, after winning the Democratic primary, he told voters with a straight face that “our southern border should be like our front porch,” with “a giant welcome mat out front and a lock on the front door.”

Scripture is plain about the gap between a religious profession and a person’s actual works. “They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.” Talarico’s voting record and Talarico’s sermons cannot both be right. One of them is performance.

The Voters Talarico Cannot Hold

His polling lead is concentrated among three groups Democrats have been hemorrhaging for a decade, namely Hispanic voters, Black Protestants, and college-educated independents. The lead is wide today because Talarico’s identity in voters’ minds is still “young pastor running on the Sermon on the Mount.” Once Texans hear the rest of the sermon, the math gets harder.

Hispanic Catholics are not theologically liberal. The Virgin Mary, in their tradition, is not a stand-in for bodily autonomy. Telling Hispanic Catholics that Mary’s fiat is biblical evidence for abortion is a campaign liability of a kind most Austin Democrats do not appreciate until they see the numbers in November. Black Protestant churches, similarly, have not embraced religious pluralism, transgender abortion access, or “God is non-binary” as core doctrines. And college-educated independents who care about the rule of law may pause at the sight of a candidate who one month wants ICE abolished and the next month likens the southern border to a welcome mat.

The Paxton campaign does not have to convert any of these voters. It only has to put Talarico’s own words in front of them, in their own languages, and let Talarico’s seminary education do the rest.

The Paxton Path

Five priorities, in order.

First, unite the GOP immediately. The primary was bitter. Cornyn voters are real people with real grievances. Paxton needs Cornyn, Sen. Ted Cruz, Gov. Greg Abbott, and President Trump on the same stage within fourteen days, projecting that the family fight is over and the general election is one fight. Wesley Hunt should be deployed in Houston. The window for healing is narrow, and Talarico’s $27 million does not wait politely for it to close.

Second, build the small-dollar machine. Talarico has bragged that 98 percent of his donations are $100 or less and that he refuses corporate PAC money. That is a populist narrative Paxton can match and exceed. MAGA donors do not need to be persuaded that this seat matters. They need a clear, repeated ask and a list that lives outside the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s bureaucracy. Trump’s small-dollar infrastructure is the template, and Paxton’s MAGA-warrior brand is the natural sales pitch.

Third, dominate earned media on long-form platforms. Talarico’s rise was built on Rogan, Colbert, and Ezra Klein. Paxton should not cede that terrain. He has a 100-lawsuit record against the Biden administration with an 80 percent win rate, a record of defending the Heartbeat Act and the Human Life Protection Act, a record of fighting to keep concertina wire on the Rio Grande, a record of busting illegal ballot-harvesting schemes, a record of forcing border wall construction to resume. None of that translates through a thirty-second cable buy. It translates through two hours with a serious host, where Paxton can also let Talarico’s own words be played back unedited.

Fourth, organize church to church. Texas has more evangelical and Hispanic Catholic congregations than any state in the union. A field operation that puts Talarico’s sermons and floor speeches in front of pastors and lay leaders, in English and Spanish, is worth more than a hundred million dollars of network television. The receipts do the work. No one needs to be told what to think after watching the Joe Rogan clip on the Annunciation.

Fifth, address the impeachment directly and bury it. The Texas Senate acquitted Paxton on every count in 2023. The case was driven by disgruntled former staff and partisan legislators, and Texas Republican voters punished the impeachers in subsequent primaries. Paxton should say it once, clearly, with the receipts, and pivot every subsequent attempt to relitigate it back to the question Texans care about in 2026, which is who will fight for the border, the unborn, and the Constitution. The Democrats will run the impeachment ads anyway. The only choice is whether voters first hear about it from Paxton, on his terms, or from a $27 million stranger.

The Stakes

Senate maps are not built on hope. They are built on seats that hold. Texas was assumed safe until last night, and the Cook Political Report has now nudged the race from Solid R to Likely R. National Democrats have not believed in a Texas pickup since the Lloyd Bentsen era. They believe in this one. If Paxton wins, the Senate majority is secure for two more years and Talarico becomes a cautionary tale about progressive overreach in a state Trump just carried by fourteen points. If Paxton loses, the consequences will be measured not in caucus seats but in confirmations, judicial appointments, treaties, and a body of legislation that flows through the upper chamber for the next six years.

James Talarico is a gifted politician. He is also a counterfeit on the most important question he has chosen to make central to his campaign. Texans are not gullible, and Hispanic and Black Texans of faith are particularly hard to deceive on doctrine. Paxton’s path to November runs straight through the gap between Talarico’s pulpit and Talarico’s record, and the next one hundred sixty-one days are the time to walk it.

Cornyn did not lose to Ken Paxton because Texas Republicans suddenly developed an allergy to the establishment. They have tolerated, even rewarded, the establishment for three decades. He lost because Senate Majority Leader John Thune refused to fight for the one piece of legislation that would have triggered a Trump endorsement, ended the runoff before it began, and handed Cornyn his fifth term on a silver platter.

The bill in question was the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act — the SAVE America Act — which requires documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. The House passed it twice. President Trump declared it his “No. 1 priority.” And on March 5, 2026, Paxton handed Cornyn, Thune, and the entire Senate Republican conference a way out of the most expensive primary fight in modern Texas history.

* Cornyn led the March 3 primary 42 percent to 40.5 percent, and Trump was reportedly prepared to endorse him within days.

* On March 5, Paxton publicly offered to drop out of the race if Senate leadership ended the filibuster and passed the SAVE America Act.

* Trump seized the offer, delayed his endorsement, and made SAVE Act passage the condition for backing any candidate.

* Thune dismissed both the talking filibuster and the nuclear option, declaring the votes did not exist and refusing to whip them.

* An attempt to attach the bill to a reconciliation vehicle failed 48–50, with Murkowski, McConnell, Collins, and Tillis joining Democrats.

* After more than two months of deadlock, Trump endorsed Paxton on May 19, one week before the runoff.

* Pro-Cornyn satellite groups burned through roughly $60 million, including $18 million from the Lone Star Freedom Project, to no avail.

The Ultimatum That Sealed It

Paxton’s gambit was not subtle. Trailing Cornyn after the March 3 primary and watching Trump telegraph an endorsement of the incumbent, the Texas attorney general posted on X at 12:18 p.m. on March 5 that the SAVE America Act was the most important bill the Senate could ever pass, and that he would consider leaving the race if Senate leadership lifted the filibuster and got it across the finish line. He texted the post directly to Trump to make sure it landed.

It landed. Trump, who had spent months pressing Thune to either end the filibuster or break it through a talking filibuster, suddenly had leverage neither he nor anyone else had been able to apply. The Texas Senate runoff became the cudgel. Endorse Cornyn, and Trump signals to the conference that his top legislative priority can be deferred indefinitely. Withhold the endorsement, and Cornyn twists in the wind while every Republican senator gets a daily reminder of what their inaction is costing them.

Cornyn, to his credit, eventually said publicly that he would support ending the filibuster to pass the SAVE Act — a reversal from his career-long position. But the conversion came too late, sounded too convenient, and could not overcome the fact that he had spent two decades cultivating the very institutional reverence that was now strangling him.

The Counterfactual Thune Refused to Build

This was a winnable fight. Not easy, but winnable, and the math is not complicated.

Four Senate Republicans — Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, Susan Collins, and Thom Tillis — joined every Democrat to kill an effort to attach the SAVE Act to reconciliation in late March. That is the holdout list. That is the entire problem.

A serious majority leader, working in tandem with a senior incumbent whose career was on the line, had real leverage over those four. McConnell is retiring at the end of his term and has no further electoral concerns, but he has a legacy to manage and a successor in Thune who owes him nothing if he refuses to deliver. Collins faces a 2026 challenge of her own. Tillis was already in trouble with his base and announced his exit shortly thereafter. Only Murkowski was genuinely untouchable, and even she could have been bracketed.

Thune did not whip them. He did not threaten committee assignments, campaign resources, or floor privileges. He did not stand alongside Cornyn and make the case that the entire establishment wing of the party — the wing he was elected to lead — was about to lose one of its most senior members because four colleagues would not bend on a procedural rule that has been bent dozens of times before.

Instead, Thune told Fox News Digital that critics were “creating false expectations.” He told reporters the talking filibuster had “never been done, or at least hasn’t been done in modern history.” He spoke about leadership as the responsibility to “define reality.” What he defined was the reality of his own surrender.

The Establishment Eats Its Own

There is a particular irony in how this ended. Senate Republican leadership has spent two generations defending the filibuster as the chamber’s holiest object. They have lectured grassroots conservatives about institutional norms, about the long game, about why the rules of the Senate matter more than any single piece of legislation.

And the moment that defense cost them one of their own — a four-term incumbent who has been the very model of the institutionalist they claim to revere — they did not even fight. They shrugged. They counted votes, declared the math impossible, and let Cornyn walk to the gallows alone.

Paxton has scandals. Paxton has baggage. Paxton was impeached by his own state’s House of Representatives and acquitted by its Senate in a process that turned half the Texas GOP against the other half. None of that mattered. What mattered was that he understood something Cornyn and Thune did not: the Republican voter base in 2026 does not want senators who define reality. It wants senators who change it.

The Lesson the Conference Will Refuse to Learn

Senate Republicans are already telling reporters, on background, that Trump’s endorsement of Paxton “ruined his chances to legislate for the remainder of this Congress.” One senior GOP aide told Notus that “now he doesn’t have a governing majority.” The whining is audible from a mile away.

This is precisely backward. Trump did not destroy the governing majority. The governing majority destroyed itself by refusing to govern. A conference that cannot pass its president’s top legislative priority, cannot save its own four-term incumbent, and cannot whip four colleagues on a vote of existential importance to one of its members is not a governing majority. It is a debating society with letterhead.

Cornyn’s loss — assuming the trajectory of every credible poll holds — should be read as something more than the defeat of one senator. It is the bill coming due for an institutionalism that has spent decades demanding loyalty from the base while extending none in return. The voters were told the rules of the Senate mattered. They watched the leadership prove it. And they made the rational decision that if the institution will not bend to save its own, the institution does not deserve the seat.

“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” Paul’s warning to the Corinthians applies as cleanly to political coalitions as to anything else. A party cannot serve both the procedural comforts of its leadership and the substantive demands of its voters. At some point the yoke breaks, and one of the two oxen walks away.

Tonight, in Texas, that ox is John Cornyn. Tomorrow it will be someone else. The only question is whether Thune and the conference he leads will learn anything from it before the next incumbent finds himself standing in a parking lot in Corpus Christi, insisting he refuses to lose, while the voters explain to him that he already has.

The cabinet secretary who presided over that disappearance is now asking Californians to make him their next governor.

Xavier Becerra served as Secretary of Health and Human Services from March 2021 through January 2025. His agency, through the Office of Refugee Resettlement, held legal custody of every unaccompanied alien child encountered at the southern border. His agency was charged by Congress with placing those children in safe, vetted homes and following up on their welfare. His campaign website now sells him as the candidate of “experience” and the only Democrat with the managerial chops to govern the nation’s largest state. The experience is real. The results are the indictment.

He Was Warned. In Writing. By His Own People.

The most generous reading of Becerra’s tenure would be that he inherited a chaotic system and did his best in difficult circumstances. The documentary record makes that reading impossible to sustain.

In July 2021, eleven managers inside the Office of Refugee Resettlement signed an internal memo warning that labor trafficking of children was increasing. They told their superiors, in plain language, that the system had become “one that rewards individuals for making quick releases, and not one that rewards individuals for preventing unsafe releases.” That memo went up the chain. It did not produce reform. It produced acceleration.

By 2022, the HHS Office of Inspector General had reached the same conclusion from the outside, finding that guidance issued under Becerra to speed releases had stripped safeguards and likely increased the risk of harm to children. A second OIG report in February 2024 documented missing safety-check documentation in 16 percent of sampled case files and untimely or undocumented follow-up calls in many more.

None of this was secret. None of this was unknown to the secretary. The pattern was warned of by career staff, confirmed by the inspector general, exposed by congressional investigators, and reported on the front page of The New York Times.

The Assembly Line

The most damning evidence in the entire scandal is in Becerra’s own voice. At a 2022 staff meeting, captured on a recording later obtained by The Times, the secretary scolded HHS employees for not moving children out of federal custody fast enough. His chosen analogy was Henry Ford’s auto plants.

“If Henry Ford had seen this in his plants, he would have never become famous and rich. This is not the way you do an assembly line.”

That is a sitting cabinet secretary, talking about migrant children — many of them under twelve, some of them infants — and complaining that the rate of disposal was insufficiently industrial. A former HHS contractor, Kelsey Keswani, told The Times that staff understood the directive clearly. They had to release roughly twenty percent of the children every week or face discipline. The vetting that survived this pressure was minimal. Sometimes the only document used to confirm a “familial relationship” was a birth certificate from a country where forged birth certificates are sold openly. DNA testing, which would have caught most of the frauds, was used only voluntarily. So the assembly line ran.

“I Have Never Heard That Number”

In March 2023, Senator James Lankford asked Becerra, under oath at a Senate Finance Committee hearing, about the 85,000 children HHS could not contact. Becerra’s answer:

“I have never heard that number of 85,000, I don’t know where it comes from and so I would say it doesn’t sound at all to be realistic.”

The number came from his own department’s data, obtained by The New York Times and published weeks earlier in the same investigation that captured the Henry Ford recording. The number turned out to be conservative. By the time the Trump administration took over in January 2025 and conducted a full audit, the actual figure of children lost or placed with unvetted sponsors had reached approximately 300,000 — out of roughly 470,000 unaccompanied minors processed during the four Biden years. Two-thirds of all the children in his agency’s care were, in the most precise sense, gone.

What Was on the Other End

Numbers anesthetize. The cases do not.

The Department of Homeland Security Inspector General has documented children placed at addresses that did not exist. Roughly 31,000 of the unaccompanied minors processed under Becerra were registered to invalid addresses. In Orlando, twenty-two children were at one point connected to a single strip club. A whistleblower told senators that more than three hundred children had been routed to a single Texas apartment that turned out to be a human trafficking site. The DHS Inspector General also found that biographic and biometric vetting requirements for sponsors and household members were quietly dropped in 2021 — meaning sponsors could not be reliably checked for criminal histories or cartel ties.

When the Trump administration began processing the backlog in 2025, HHS uncovered something the Biden administration had managed to keep buried for years: a stack of 65,605 unaddressed reports filed by HHS staff, contractors, and the children themselves. The breakdown was released in May 2025 by Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley. It included 56,591 notifications of concern, 7,346 reports of suspected human trafficking, and 1,688 fraud leads where adults were impersonating relatives. None of this had been investigated. The reports had been filed and shelved.

Of the roughly 22,000 children the Trump task force has located so far, twenty-seven were found to have died — by murder, suicide, or drug overdose. DHS has documented at least two cases of girls aged fourteen and fifteen who were impregnated by their sponsor or by a member of the sponsor’s household. ORR has identified 1,700 cases in which children were placed with unrelated sponsors with no record that any home study was ever performed. In at least one case, surfaced through Grassley’s oversight, HHS placed a child with a household tied to MS-13 — and then punished the whistleblower who reported it.

Jeremiah 22:3 commands those in authority: Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor; and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood. Whatever the secretary believed he was doing, his department did the opposite. It delivered the spoiled into the hand of the oppressor. It did violence to the stranger and the fatherless. The blood is not metaphorical.

The Obstruction

The instinct of a competent administrator confronted with this catastrophe would be transparency. Becerra chose obstruction. Three hundred fifty thousand refund checks went out. Many of the recipients were the very Latino constituents Becerra now asks to make him governor.
