Before moving into fiction, she worked as a chef, a cooking school owner, a cookbook author, and a syndicated columnist for the Los Angeles Times. Her first cookbook won a Julia Child/IACP award. Her books have topped Amazon bestseller lists in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Alaska Spark is the recipient of several indie awards for best romance. Memoir: Sharing Your Story.

In the book, she shares about the night her husband didn't come home, and she discovered he had been arrested for Human Trafficking. She shares her story of deception, judgment, and overall healing, noting that a memoir is usually about a very charged event.

Finding Inspiration for Poetry

He shares how meditation and using his role as a channel helps him write his poetry. Although he had always enjoyed reading and writing poetry, he had never necessarily thought of himself as becoming a professional poet. After encountering a difficult situation in the form of a break-up, he realized his calling.

Developing Setting in Historical Fiction

We talked about crucial elements like setting and how, despite being a trilogy following the same person, she has chosen three different locations and three different time periods. Her first was in St. Petersburg in Russia, four years after the Bloody Sunday Massacre. The second, though she wrote first, is in New York during the Triangle Fires. Her third trilogy is set ten years in yet a new setting.

How to Research Historical Fiction

We also discussed the importance of research, and she shared how she did a lot of research for each book. Her favorite way to research is field trips, among other research methods.

This book is such a fascinating book to either thumb through or read straight through. Rebecca was a delight to talk to as she shared her inspiration in writing this book. Although this is her first book written for the general audience, she is no stranger to the written word. As an environmental law professor, she has written four other books, three environmental justice comic books, and scores of law review articles.
