The idea stemmed from the stark differences I experienced growing up in East London with working-class immigrant parents. My own household was what you would consider to be in a constant state of “functional hoarding.” Our large back garden was transformed by extra sheds and outhouses, all built to accommodate numerous broken lawnmowers that might just be useful, one day.

I didn’t think my home was all that different until I began visiting friends’ houses. The bubble popped when I was shocked to find dining tables completely clear of letters and puzzles. Their kitchen appliances were stored away in clutter-free cupboards, and their windowsills were dustless and free of a million and one trinkets that blcoked out the sun. Didn’t everyone’s front entrance have a broken industrial chest freezer acting as an ottoman to store scarves and gloves?

I guess not.

Returning home, I would sit on one of our many sofa-beds and look up at the towering bookshelves looming over me. I came to the odd realization that it would take multiple lifetimes for all five members of my family, working in collaboration, to read the thousands of books surrounding us.

In my first series, I forage through this library of novels I grew up within. By looking at current trends and deep-diving into the collections that had curated my own curiosity, I want to delve in deeper to uncover why we gather the things we collect.

The idea for this podcast began when I joined the South Staffordshire college Podcast course with Lucy Wood. It was an already half formed idea, but the course allowed me to develop on it. The course gave me the skills to plan and structure my podcast, identify my audience, branding and marketing and content scheduling. The reason for combining food and true crime is simply because I love cooking and I live true crime every day, and whilst there may be plenty of true crime and cooking podcast out there, nobody has done a crossover. Millions of listeners consume true crime content every day. People are fascinated by mysteries, investigations, and human psychology and podcasts allow for deep storytelling that documentaries sometimes cannot. I also wanted to create a more immersive experience for listeners. Food brings people together and cooking is increasingly being used as a form of relaxation and self-care. Many people already listen to podcasts when preparing meals, so rather than pressing play and multitasking, listeners are encouraged to cook along, sit down and become fully immersed in the story.

An example structure of the podcast:

* Introduction to the recipe.

* Cooking guidance and preparation.

* Time for the listener to plate their meal (I could use this time for promo’s if that is a future aspiration)

* Transition into the true crime narrative.

* Reflection or discussion points at the end.

The Future

Crime and Nourishment also has the potential to become more than a podcast, it could develop into a community centred around food, storytelling and discussion.

* Listeners sharing photos of their finished meals.

* Social media discussions about episodes.

* Recipe downloads.

* Seasonal themed menus.

* Listener-submitted recipe ideas.

The podcast could use bonus content linked to locations and/or themed recipes. There could also be ‘on location’ episodes and themed mini series. There will be guests who have links to crime investigations and/or food. All recipes will be made available via a blog/newsletter a few days before the episode airs. Eventually, the podcast could convert into a vodcast.

Sometimes the most powerful conversations don’t happen in planned interviews or big moments. They happen quietly, over coffee, over brunch, when people slow down and the conversation moves beyond the usual small talk.

That’s the idea behind Latte & Life.

It’s a podcast about real people and the stories that shaped them. The moments they’re proud of, the things they’ve overcome, and the experiences that changed the direction of their lives. The kind of conversations that happen naturally when someone feels comfortable enough to speak honestly.

When I started this podcast course, I didn’t fully realise how much there was to learn about turning an idea into something people could actually listen to. I’ve learned about how podcasts are structured, how music and sound can create a feeling, and how important it is to think about the listener and the experience you want them to have.

But the biggest thing I’ve taken away from the course isn’t technical.

It’s understanding the power of storytelling.

Everyone has chapters in their life that shaped them in ways others may never see. Through this course, I started to realise that podcasting is a way of giving those stories a voice. It’s not just about recording conversations; it’s about creating a space where people feel comfortable enough to reflect and share something real.

For some reason, people often feel comfortable opening-up around me. I’ve had so many unexpected conversations with people where they suddenly share something meaningful about their life. Those moments always stayed with me.

This course helped me realise that those conversations are to become something much more.

Latte & Life is about capturing those moments that happen every day, the ones that start with a simple coffee and turn into something deeper. Each episode is a relaxed conversation with someone you might pass every day, but who carries a story worth hearing.

Because when you slow down and really listen to someone, you realise something powerful.

I was not sure what to expect, I joined the 2026 Introduction to Podcasting Course at South Staffs College in January 2026. This was quite exciting, having not been in an educational environment for many many years.

However, I have had quite a few years’ experience using social media platforms with channels on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Podcasting was totally new to me, although I did find there were similarities to the social media posting process.

It remains to be seen whether I will proceed with my podcasting career however if I do, I have had a good grounding of the basics from this course and feel much better prepared to take this forward if and when that day comes.

My thanks to Staffordshire college who have assisted me in my learning journey to better understand how to accomplish this on its seven-week soundboard podcast project course.
