Developed in the 1940s by Ishin Yoshimoto, it offers a simple method for seeing your relationships more clearly, not through analysis or therapy, but through three concrete questions.

In this episode, Sarah introduces Naikan, its origins, and the practice at its heart:

What have I received from this person? What have I given to this person? What trouble or difficulty have I caused this person?

The first two questions tend to feel manageable. The third is where something shifts. This episode stays with that shift, exploring what honest self-reflection actually looks like when it moves beyond self-compassion into genuine accountability, and why that distinction matters.

If you have ever sensed a gap between the person you imagine yourself to be and what has actually been present in your relationships, this episode is for you.

Topics covered: Naikan practice, Japanese self-reflection, mindfulness and relationships, honest self-examination, contemplative practice in everyday life, self-awareness, inner work.

Monastereo is a podcast by Sarah and Monika exploring contemplative perspectives within everyday life.

Interested in exploring Naikan more deeply? Sarah offers guided Naikan reflection in individual and group formats.
