By sharing a moment of unfiltered laughter over a bin of ruined custard, these icons of queer joy provided the youth with a vital sense of human connection and belonging. Ultimately, the source illustrates how spontaneous vulnerability can pierce through oppressive environments to offer profound lessons on self-worth.

This is a public episode. Welcome to the "Stobie Pole City," a place that David (our author) calls home on Kaurna Land. While the name might suggest otherwise, David’s tales are more about the spirit of Adelaide than just power poles.

Adelaide was settled by British free settlers in the 1800s on land that was never ceded by the Kaurna People. It’s a city tucked between the hills and the sea, with a grid layout surrounded by lush parklands and beautiful sandy beaches where you can catch a sunset over the water—a real rarity for an Aussie capital outside of WA. It’s also earned the title of Australia’s "Food and Wine Capital" thanks to its proximity to the Barossa Valley and world-class produce.

When it comes to culture, David points out that Adelaide is a UNESCO City of Music and hosts massive events like the Fringe and Womadelaide. Sports fans aren't left out either; the Adelaide Oval is a legendary spot for cricket and AFL, especially during "Gather Round" when every men's AFL team plays in the city in a single week.

But what about the "Stobie" pole itself? Here's the goss:

The Design: It’s a South Australian icon made of two steel I-beams with a concrete slab in the middle, designed back in 1924 because it was cheap and durable.

The Art: They aren't just grey slabs; local artists and community groups use them as canvases for painting, mosaics, and even "knitting bombing".

The Danger: On the flip side, they are "lethal road hazards". Before airbags were common, hitting a Stobie pole even at legal speeds could make a car look like a "stomped beer can".

David even shares a bit of an embarrassing personal yarn. Back when he was a "hairless ape" of a teenager, he’d occasionally show off by shimmying up the Stobie poles outside pubs at closing time—using his shoe soles as brakes on the way down. He’s not sure if that makes him a "likeable larrikin" or a "lunatic Lager Lout," but now that he's retired and has "shrugged off the shackles" of his career, he’s just keen to share some creativity and mischief with the world.

This is a public episode.
