The theme? Accelerate Action - emphasising the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality.

Individuals, businesses, charities all mark IWD in different ways, and impactful organisations and groups across the world deliver an array of effective strategies, resources, and activities.

This week’s soundbite comes from last week’s Freedom Project graduation, with Assia and Adetutu sharing their experiences of training at Mustard Tree, as well as their plans for the future - take a listen at the top of the page.

Here’s some other examples of how Mustard Tree helps Accelerate Action.

Forging women's economic empowerment

Maximising individual income is one of our core services, and has allowed Hema to take a big step towards independence - having recently gained employment after graduating from Mustard Tree’s Freedom Project:

I came to Mustard Tree to discuss my willingness to get into work, but I was taking care of my family and didn’t know where to begin - being at home for so long made me feel so lonely.

I started coming to the art and textiles classes to meet new people - I found a community here and started to feel a change in myself.

I joined the Freedom Project with my focus back on gaining employment. I started training in the Community Shop to learn new skills. With constant encouragement and motivation, I eventually attended a work placement - then was offered a job!

- Hema, Freedom Project Trainee.

Hema has now started her new job with a local construction firm, and still attends the art drop-in to keep in contact with her community.

Addressing further areas supporting the advancement of women

Mustard Tree supported former nurse Bev through a crisis, helping to restore her confidence and self-esteem after falling on hard times - by offering training and financial support.

“Even though I worked all those years in the NHS, this is the kindest, most caring place I’ve been. It’s like a family.”

- Bev

Bev - who now volunteers at Mustard Tree’s Community Shop - said it was “nice to give something back after they helped me out”.

You can read more about Bev’s story during the BBC’s visit last year, or look back at our previous newsletter.

Providing women and girls with access to quality education and training

As well as the Freedom Project training placement, Mustard Tree offers free and accessible courses and classes to help participants improve English speaking skills.

Through structured classes such as ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and more informal English Conversation sessions - Mustard Tree is a safe and welcoming environment to learn - for both women and their children.

Promoting creative and artistic talent of women

Sometimes our biggest successes shine through our creative programmes. Drop-ins such as art, textiles and creative writing present an opportunity for women of all backgrounds to come together and express themselves in various ways.

Once in a while, we showcase artwork created in the drop-ins at our regular exhibitions - make sure to subscribe to the newsletter to be the first to find out about our next event.

Supporting women into leadership and decision-making

None of this would be possible without a strong leadership team, led by our CEO Jo Walby, Head of Services Fiona and Head of Operations Lindsey.

From our front-line services to vocational classes, women make up a vital part of our fabric, help drive us forward and keep us working to our values of Belief, Partnership, Dignity, Opportunity and Diversity.

Sophia’s Summits

Just before the New Year, we received a surprise Instagram message from seven-year-old Sophia:

“Hi, I'm Sophia (7) and I'm helping to raise money for your charity. My dad took me to Manchester to see a pantomime. On the way back to the car I noticed the homeless on the streets and it made me really sad. I've decided to walk all the Wainwright fells in the Lake District and raise as much money as I can for you! I will really try my best. Love from Sophia.”

Sophia has summited 4 of 214 Wainwrights so far, and we are incredibly grateful for every step she has taken! You can follow Sophia’s progress at @sophia_wainwrights, and help her hit her £900 fundraising target by donating to her GoFundMe page here.

Thank you to Sophia, and to all the women and girls in our lives who make Mustard Tree a special place to visit, train, work and volunteer.

Join our Movement

Thank you to all our supporters who give us hope each and every day. Often it can be about increasing access to the arts, culture - and providing the opportunity to be part of a community.

Today’s soundbite comes straight from our Little Hulton hub, during our first ‘Whose Art, Whose Culture’ exhibition. Hear from our workshop participants and Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett about the project.

In early 2024, I moved to Manchester, where I found the Mustard Tree organisation. Their drop-in art sessions welcomed me with open arms, offering not just materials but a sense of belonging. This increase in NI would wipe out those cost savings and means our existing staff and volunteers must do even more to try and cope with the increasing numbers through our doors, without the resources they need.”

- Jo Walby, Mustard Tree CEO

The National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) described the rising costs as a “triple squeeze” on charities, which already face increasing costs, reduced funding and higher demand.

You can read the full ‘i’ article online here.

Social Homes for Manchester

As part of our mission of combatting poverty and preventing homelessness, Mustard Tree is a member of the ‘Social Homes for Manchester’ coalition - a collective movement for housing justice in Manchester.

The following video explains more about the coalition, and how you can get involved.

Anyone can sign up to be part of the campaign. Main findings include:

* The number of people estimated to be sleeping rough on a single night in autumn 2023 has risen by 27% since 2022

* Rough sleeping has increased in every region of England compared to the previous year

* The majority of people sleeping rough in England are male, aged over 26 years old and from the UK. This is similar to previous years

Thanks to strong multi-sector partnerships - Manchester is bucking the trend with a 17% reduction in rough sleeping according to the most recent count. We are however still seeing an increase in new registrations by people who are in danger of becoming homeless.

Last week, Jo spoke to Nicky Campbell on BBC Radio 5 Live about the new rough sleeping data, which you can listen back to at the top of the post or below:

Entirely Predictable and Entirely Preventable

A recent Guardian article cited the new rise in homelessness a ‘source of national shame’, pointing at the below factors as contributors of the current housing crisis:

* Soaring rents

* Inadequate housing benefit

* A lack of affordable housing

* No ending of ‘no fault evictions’

To tackle this, Mustard Tree is a member of the ‘Social Homes 4 Manchester’ coalition, calling for six pledge commitments, with the building of at least 30% social homes included in all new developments in Manchester. We have had some initial, promising conversations with Manchester City Council and look forward to developing these further.

Class of 2024

Once every few weeks, we host an event for graduating Freedom Project trainees. Here is just a snippet of the campaigns we have been involved in, with a huge thank you to our partners and supporters who have helped amplify our message.

The Homeless Listings

Whilst moving around Manchester during the past couple of weeks, you may have noticed ‘The Homeless Listings’ - a series of conventional estate agent ads that, rather than presenting desirable homes for sale and rent in Manchester, reflect the stark reality that people in homelessness face when looking for a place to sleep in the area.

We were incredibly fortunate to be approached by Leith - a Manchester and Edinburgh-based creative agency - who pitched the campaign to us with the offer of free outdoor advertising. Leith said "Ourselves along with Republic of Media donated their time along with media buyers who donated their ‘Out of Home’ sites to support the campaign."

Ed Brooke, Managing Partner, Leith commented; “As rents rise and the waiting list for social housing grows, the housing crisis in the UK is forcing an increasing number of people into homelessness. We’re all used to looking into estate agency windows at ads showcasing gorgeous properties, so we thought this medium would be particularly powerful in exposing the desperate situation people are facing today.”

We’d like to thank Leith, Republic of Media and all the partners who came together to support the campaign at no cost to our charity - we are massively grateful.

Spirit of Manchester Award WINNERS

We’re delighted to share that we took home the ‘Tackling Inequalities’ trophy at the Spirit of Manchester Awards!

Thank you so much for everyone who voted for us on the night, and to Ellie and Marvin who represented Mustard Tree to receive the award. You can rewatch at 2:24:00 on the below video!

Congratulations to all our fellow nominees for the Spirit of Manchester Awards, and to everyone who voted for Mustard Tree for the I Love Manchester Awards in November - fingers crossed!

Heard Storytelling at Manchester Arndale

It’s been a pleasure to be part of Heard Stortelling’s latest campaign: Random Objects of Kindness - which has brought together stories from Mustard Tree and its fellow organisations to the Manchester Arndale Centre.

Joe, Graham and Haydn (above) all contributed on behalf of Mustard Tree, with their stories available to listen to inside Manchester Arndale, or via the centre’s website.

The goal of the exhibition is to foster a greater understanding of the various factors contributing to homelessness and emphasise the importance of community support. Each “living portrait” is accompanied by an image of an item that played a pivotal role in the individual’s journey toward independent living. Visitors to the Arndale Centre can access the storytellers’ narratives by simply scanning a QR code on their mobile phones.

The free audio-visual exhibition will run until 23 October, and is located on the lower mall, near Monki.

Mustard Tree and Partners Declare Private Rent Emergency in Greater Manchester.

Leading charities from across Greater Manchester - including Mustard Tree - have declared a “private rent emergency” in the region and have called for major changes to help protect thousands of local people facing homelessness.

Stepping Stone Projects, Mustard Tree, The Booth Centre, and Greater Manchester Shelter have joined forces to launch the Greater Manchester Private Rent Emergency campaign – and are calling on councils, politicians and a range of other stakeholders to publicly recognise the crisis in the private rental sector and back their plans for reform.

This campaign aims to address the escalating homelessness crisis in the region, which the group argue is exacerbated by a perfect storm of soaring rents, frozen benefit rates, increasing evictions and the cost-of-living crisis.

The charities are calling for crucial measures to improve the private rented sector and curb the growing tide of homelessness. The campaign’s core focus revolves around the “4 R’s”:

* Regulation: The swift introduction and implementation of the Renters’ Reform Bill, banning ‘no-fault’ evictions and enhancing tenant rights.

* Rent Control: Greater Manchester should have the power to control private rents in order to protect tenants from unaffordable increases.

* Rates of Local Housing Allowance (LHA): Increase LHA rates and reinstate indexation to ensure that the private rental sector can be accessed by households in receipt of benefits.

* Rights: End age discrimination in the LHA system and discrimination based on immigration status.

Jo Walby, Chief Executive of Mustard Tree said:

“Only by recognising that we are facing a Private Rent Emergency can we start to make some of the local, regional and national changes needed to prevent even more people from experiencing homelessness.

“Our organisations are all dedicated to providing support to people in the greatest need, and we will continue in this mission. But it is also incumbent on us to advocate for a fairer, more effective system, where everyone has the right to secure housing.”

In the coming months, the organisations will be sharing further information and case studies to highlight the extent of the problem.

Join our Movement

Our monthly giving campaign is gaining momentum, but this is still just the beginning. With over 10,000 people a month now coming through our doors, we need your support more than ever.

To those who have already joined our campaign or give to us monthly - THANK YOU! My aim is to bring you ‘behind-the-scenes’, to see the reality of fighting poverty in Greater Manchester. Thank you for reading, please subscribe and let me know any questions you may have in the comments, or email information@mustardtree.org.uk, and I will try and answer in future blogs.

Thank you for your support - we could not run this charity without you.

Friday 30th June

We’ve had a busy week with press enquiries, asking our thoughts on Prince William’s campaign to end homelessness. Anything that champions compassion, dignity and love for people who are homeless or vulnerably housed must be positive. We hope this will be a long-term, local partner based programme of support - helping to rebuild the safety net around housing - something Greater Manchester has been focusing on for the past 5 years through the GM Homelessness Action Network, Manchester Homelessness Partnership and Real Living Wage campaigns.

We welcome to national leadership as we know how important our GM Mayor - Andy Burnham - has been in uniting different partners to focus on homelessness.

We also need to see real progress in building more houses. I don’t know how we can talk about ending homelessness without building homes? I hope we see changes that means affordable homes are a moral requirement of our society - rather than housing being a commodity for profit.

This BBC article talks about people living in motor homes in the US and made me think of a person I met last week who had been sleeping in his car outside our charity. He was on a zero-hours contract as a security guard so could not afford to rent somewhere. His car was stolen during the day when he was at work. He had never been homeless before and his housing assessment was 7 days away because he was low priority…

“I don’t know how we can talk about ending homelessness without building homes?”

We ended up working with our charity partner (Coffee4Craig) to share paying for a cheap hotel for him to stay in for a few days while he waited for his assessment and helped him work through his most urgent problems.

Trying to prevent homelessness is something we do every day and there are thousands of people a year that register with Mustard Tree (and other charities) whose pain, housing situation and financial worries are hidden.

Thank you to our supporters, volunteers and partners - we are so grateful for your kindness and care.

We want to build a movement for positive change - creating a space for people who are as saddened as we are by the inequity in our country.

We want to offer practical ways for people who care about fairness, opportunity, dignity for all to get involved.

Please join our High Fivers campaign, reply to this email for more details or message information@mustardtree.org.uk. Cost of living increases and the pace of life is leaving many left behind. In any other circumstance, a record-breaking day would be something to celebrate. Today, we are left with the solace that we’re able to support more people in different ways - and we couldn’t do that without your help.

The graph below illustrates the steady rise in Food Club visitors between April 2021-22, driven by a cost of living crisis which has yet to peak before further fuel price increases in October.

If you want to know more about our refurbished Food Club, and how you can help keep it stocked, click the below blog post by Laura, or follow this link.

There’s no denying that everything feels a bit scary at the moment. The knock-on effects of Brexit, Covid-19 and war, now coupled with great uncertainty within our own government. When consumer confidence falls and inflation rises - people suffer. This week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed plans for a new right to buy scheme - allowing social association tenants to buy their own homes and people on Universal Credit to put their benefits towards a mortgage.

But what does this mean for Greater Manchester, where there is already a struggle for social housing? Our CEO Jo Walby spoke to BBC North West Tonight and BBC Radio Manchester to give Mustard Tree’s responses to the announcement - we would like to share these with you.

Initiative could ‘worsen housing crisis’

In discussion with BBC Political Editor Annabel Tiffin, Jo explains why this proposal could worsen the housing crisis in Greater Manchester.

“At a time when we’re already struggling with a housing crisis in Greater Manchester, to then have an initiative which says we will reduce the social housing stock, and we may look to replace that with some vague initiative, does not give confidence - it breeds panic really”.

You can click below to view the whole segment.

For a more in-depth analysis of the initiative, you can also listen to Jo’s interview with Becky Want on BBC Radio Manchester, in the header of this newsletter.

Removing the safety net

In it, Jo speaks about how the plans could “remove the safety net of social housing for future generations of families”.

“It might help one family who would be lucky enough to buy their home, but it absolutely removes the safety net of social housing for future generations of families. We’ve had significant under-investment in council housing for the last 30-40 years. We’re trying to build this back up now, so the thought of selling it off again just fills me with dread”.

Jo goes on to talk about temporary accommodation levels, and how the cost of living crisis has dramatically increased demand for our Food Clubs.

This week, our Ancoats Community Shop relaunched with a reformatted Food Club, expanded to help accommodate the influx of new clients now in need of the service.

“It’s affecting more and more of us - we’re going to go through a really difficult 18 months or so now. So anything that threatens the creaking social services we’ve got in place now by suggesting that we sell it off to individuals, is really scary to be honest”.

To listen to the full interview, scroll to the top of the page and hit the play button.

Can you help us combat poverty and prevent homelessness?

If you enjoy reading our newsletter and want to support our work, the best way you can do this is by joining the Real 10k and setting up a regular gift to help keep our services running. Taking steps to keep costs down may seem straightforward, but won’t be as achievable for people who do not have the disposable income to budget and plan. For instance, 50% of people who took part in a Greater Manchester Poverty Action (GMPA) survey said they ‘pay their energy bills through a prepayment meter”, which can be around £142 a year more expensive than paying monthly by direct debit.

There are many factors contributing to the poverty premium, but the below quote by Terry Pratchett from his book ‘Men at Arms’ sums up the issue perfectly:

“A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet” - Terry Pratchett

For more about the poverty premium and to view the full report by GMPA, click here.

A Look inside our Community Shops

If it costs more to be poor, then this article by our Community and Events Coordinator Laura explains why furniture, white goods, food and clothing donations for our Community Shops can provide a lifeline for so many across Greater Manchester.

Making essential items available at low-cost - or gifted through our furniture vouchers - prevents people from turning to payday loans and ‘buy now, pay later’ schemes, which so often lead to spiraling debt and consequential stress.

If you think you can support our Community Shops through in-kind donations, please visit our website or email information@mustardtree.org.uk.

Greater Manchester High Sheriff Visit

Last week we welcomed Mrs Diane Hawkins, High Sheriff of Greater Manchester - for a tour of our Ancoats hub and to discuss our ‘coming out of Covid’ plans.

The High Sheriff said: “I’m so impressed by all that is happening at Mustard Tree. What a fantastic job and such brilliant staff and volunteers. Manchester is very lucky to have them showing the way to meet the challenges of so many people in our community. A privilege to meet them all”.

Repeal of the Vagrancy Act

There was a win for dignity this week as the government has made the decision to repeal the 200 year-old Vagrancy Act, an “offensive and outdated” law which has sparked controversy and debate for years. The Big Issue has covered the story, which you can read here.

PJ Livesey

A big thank you to all our corporate and community supporters who are heeding the call by setting up clothing and food donation drives in offices around Greater Manchester - including PJ Livesey who have utilised their surplus office-space brilliantly.

Want to get involved? You can watch the video below, or listen to the full radio report at the top of the page.

The article reinforces our concerns that the next 18-24 months will be particularly difficult for those with less income - as inflation continues to rise on essential items such as food and energy.

Can your local community group, business or church help keep our food costs down by arranging a regularly collection?
