I just finished an 80-minute deep dive with award-winning investigative journalist Will Potter (Green Is the New Red, Little Red Barns). We didn’t just talk about the news; we looked at the systemic machinery being used to dismantle dissent in 2026.

The Big Takeaway: The “war on terror” tactics once reserved for environmental activists are now being deployed against mainstream civil rights organizations and journalists.

1. The SPLC Indictment is a Canary in the Coal Mine

We spent a significant portion of the interview breaking down the DOJ’s recent indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

* The Claim: The DOJ alleges fraud and the “funding of hate groups.”

* The Reality: We discussed how the DOJ is intentionally misinterpreting standard investigative tactics—like infiltrating extremist groups to dismantle them—as “supporting” those groups.

* The Threat: Will argues that because the SPLC filled the intelligence gap left by the FBI regarding far-right violence, they have been marked as a political target.

2. Minneapolis and the Lethal Reach of “Operation Metro Surge.”

The conversation turned toward the recent violence in Minneapolis. We discussed the cases of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, both fatally shot by federal agents (ICE and CBP) in January.

* These weren’t isolated incidents. We analyzed how federal agencies are acting like private military forces with a “culture of impunity.”

* Will pointed out that when a resistance movement, like the one in Minneapolis, actually threatens the power structure, a violent backlash from the state becomes “inevitable.”

3. The Death of Investigation vs. The Rise of Commentary

Will shared some “radical honesty” about the state of our industry.

* The “Dying Breed”: True investigative journalism, relying on FOIA requests, court documents, and years of digging, is being replaced by a “commentary” model that values branding over facts. We talked about journalists like Ken Klippenstein and his work on many things, including NSPM-7.

* The Cost: Independent work is becoming harder to sustain as the government finds new ways to “criminalize” the act of bearing witness (like the “Ag-Gag” laws discussed in his new book, Little Red Barns).

4. “David vs. Goliath.”

We closed on a surprisingly bold note. If the current economic and political systems are collapsing, Will believes we need a “bigger imagination.” If no one is coming to save us, then no one is coming to stop us from building something entirely new.
