Jenny's story is not just about leaving a job.

It's about survival, recovery, and slowly rediscovering who you are when the noise finally stops.

Key Thoughts

* Carrying 30 years of unprocessed trauma while still showing up every day has a breaking point, and hitting it doesn’t make you weak.

* You can be a deeply caring, competent leader and still have nothing left to give.

* Sometimes the bravest financial decision you can make is investing in your own recovery.

* Your body will tell you when a work environment isn’t safe long before your brain catches up.

* The space between jobs is not wasted time. It is necessary healing time.

* Detaching from your own body is a survival strategy that eventually stops working.

* You cannot build something new on ground that hasn’t had time to breathe.

What This Means For You

If any part of Jenny’s story feels familiar, here are some things worth sitting with:

* Your nervous system is not broken. If your body is telling you something feels unsafe at work, that is not an overreaction. It is information. Learn to listen to it rather than override it.

* Leaving is not failure. Sometimes the most honoring thing you can do for yourself is walk away. The key is having enough support around you to make that decision from a grounded place rather than pure desperation.

* The detox period is real and necessary. If you are in between jobs right now, please resist the pressure to immediately pivot into action. Your nervous system needs time to decompress before you have the capacity to build anything new.

* Your emotional backlog is not going away on its own. The things you have been putting in the deal with it later pile are still there. Therapy, community, and intentional self-reflection are how you begin to work through them and create more space for the life you actually want.

* You get to build at your own pace. Whether you are recovering from burnout, starting a business, or simply figuring out who you are outside of your job title, your journey does not have to look like anyone else’s.

Come Journey With Us

If any of this resonated with you and you'd like to go deeper with the exact tools, resources, and community built specifically to support trauma survivors navigating their careers, consider joining us in the Resilient Career Academy.

You don't have to figure this out alone. There is a place where people understand exactly what you are carrying, and where your pace, your healing, and your story are not just welcomed, they are honored.

Get full access to Resilient Career Academy at resilientcareers.substack.com/subscribe

Cyndi Bennett | Career Coaching for Trauma Survivors

<itunes:author>Cyndi Bennett | Career Coaching for Trauma Survivors</itunes:author><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>4420</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://substackcdn.com/feed/podcast/5844271/post/196405229/26107c91d51b3a46c6692fc4ca3fae7c.jpg"/><itunes:season>0</itunes:season><itunes:episode>55</itunes:episode><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

What Nobody Warned Me About Building a Business After Trauma | Your Trauma-Wise Career Guide Ep 54

Nobody warned me that building my own business wouldn't automatically feel safe. 💙

If you left the traditional workplace to build something of your own — or you're planning to — this episode is for you. Proof that you're not enough, not ready, not cut out for this. And for trauma survivors, that voice has a history behind it.

In this episode, I'm continuing the conversation from last week — where I issued a public apology to my community after leaving a coaching program that wasn't trauma-informed — and getting real about what happens after accountability. Specifically: how do you stop calling it failure and start calling it information?
In this episode we explore:

Why trauma survivors have a harder time with professional setbacks (and why that makes complete sense)
What actually happened when I left the program — and what it clarified about my values
Four things setbacks are doing that we usually miss when we're in the middle of them
Why you can't think your way into a reframe until your nervous system has had its response
What trauma-informed career resilience actually looks like in practice

This isn't about toxic positivity or "failing forward" platitudes. But collaboration isn't about losing your authentic identity—it's about bringing your full self to the table and allowing what you create together to become more than you could protect alone.

I share my personal progression from "unhindered" (2023) to "connection" (2024) to "community" (2025) and now to "collaboration" (2026), revealing how each year built the foundation for the next. You'll discover why collaboration requires something different from cooperation or coordination, and how it asks trauma survivors to practice profound courage.

In this episode, you'll explore:

* The crucial difference between cooperation, coordination, and true collaboration
* Why sharing control doesn't mean losing your authentic identity
* How collaboration builds on the foundation of safety, connection, and community
* The vulnerable courage required when trauma survivors choose co-creation
* Practical ways collaboration might show up in your career journey

Timestamps:
00:00 - Introduction: The word that keeps appearing
02:15 - Defining collaboration vs. cooperation and coordination
05:30 - The vulnerability of shared ownership
08:45 - My progression: From unhindered to collaboration
12:20 - 2024: Connection to self and others
14:40 - 2025: Building community and finding your people
17:30 - 2026: When community becomes co-creation
20:15 - What collaboration might look like in practice
22:45 - Your invitation to build together

Ready to explore how collaboration could transform your career development? They measure achievement without accounting for the energy it takes just to show up. They celebrate advancement without honoring the healing journey that makes sustainable growth possible.

In this episode, I share how I define success for trauma survivors: Success is making intentional progress toward meaningful goals while honoring your capacity and supporting your continued healing.

🎯 What You'll Learn:

*Why traditional success metrics create exhaustion for trauma survivors
*The problem with treating success as a destination
*How to define success through intentional progress, meaningful goals, honoring capacity, and supporting healing
*What success looks like at different stages of your healing journey
*How to develop your own trauma-informed definition of success

The world needs your version of success. Not the watered-down, trauma-ignoring version that traditional career advice pushes. The real version—the one that honors your healing, leverages your wisdom, and creates sustainable impact.

Remember, your healing journey isn't a detour from your career path—it's part of what makes you an extraordinary professional.

Ready to build a career that honors both your ambition and your healing? The trust doesn't just crack—it shatters.

In this episode, I'm breaking down why workplace ruptures feel so catastrophic for trauma survivors, what's actually happening in your nervous system during these moments, and the seven essential components you need to address for genuine repair.

🎯 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:

* Why trauma survivors overreact to small workplace disconnections
* How past trauma entangles with present professional conflicts
* The 7 components of trauma-informed workplace repair
* How to distinguish between past triggers and present reality
* When workplace relationships are safe to repair (and when they're not)
* How to communicate in repair without over-apologizing
* Why your ability to navigate rupture IS your career advancement

⏱️ TIMESTAMPS:
00:00 Hook: The Disproportionate Math of Trauma
01:00 Why Workplace Ruptures Feel Catastrophic
03:00 How Trauma Responses Show Up at Work
05:00 When Past Trauma Meets Present Conflict
07:00 Component 1: Distinguishing Between Then and Now
08:00 Component 2: Regulating Your Nervous System for Connection
10:00 Component 3: Assessing Relationship Safety
11:00 Component 4: Communicating Without Over-Responsibility
13:00 Component 5: Making and Receiving Repair Bids
14:00 Component 6: Rebuilding Trust Through Small Actions
15:00 Component 7: When Repair Isn't Possible
17:00 Why This Matters for Your Career
19:00 Integration, Not Perfection
20:00 Call to Action & Closing

💡 KEY INSIGHT:
Your trauma taught you that rupture is dangerous, repair is impossible or comes at too high a cost, and safety requires either perfect performance or complete withdrawal. Your healing gets to teach you something different: that rupture is inevitable in human relationships, repair is possible when there's mutual willingness, and safety can be rebuilt through small, consistent, authentic actions.

When you're ready, here are 3 ways I can help you grow your career journey:

Free trauma-informed career development resources from my website! Visit https://www.cyndibennettconsulting.com for always up-to-date tips.

Ready to build a fulfilling career with trauma-informed support? Join The Resilient Career Academy Learning Community, where trauma survivors support each other, share resources, and develop career resilience in a safe, understanding environment

Ready for personalized trauma-informed career coaching? Explore my range of virtual coaching packages designed for different stages of your career journey.
