Fitszoo in Regent Arcade, Cheltenham is a store devoted to vintage fashion and, of particular excitement for me, old football shirts.

I was surrounded by the shirts of my youth with the legends of the time blazoned on the back.

I got chatting to Max Brown, the founder that day and was gutted to learn the store is soon shuttering - Max is relocating to London and planning open a Fitszoo there.

But the shirts are still available online to Gloucestershire folk (and everyone) so Max and I recorded a podcast conversation .

Given that Max is only 22, his knowledge and passion for 90s and 00s football is sensational. I enjoyed this conversation and I hope you do too.

We covered:

** Why Max started collecting vintage shirts (and clothes generally)

** How it started in his dorm at boarding school

** Why Park Ji-sung is his favourite player

** Why short-sleeve David Beckham shirts are way less valuable than the long-sleeve ones

** Max’s dream shirt

** Why modern shirts are a poorer quality than those made pre 2010.

Find out more about Fitszoo: https://fitszoo.com

****************

Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-street

Info on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at - https://www.herringshoes.co.uk

For 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing: Check out the intro to the podcast.

For a 10% discount with GHS Cheltenham Clinics’ Health Checks - https://ghsclinics.health, contact me: teddy@drapermedia.co.uk

This is a public episode. But not so the feature of today’s conversation.

This is an interview with Texas-born defender Jonathan Tomkinson on how he came to be a professional footballer in his father’s homeland of England.

Lots of ground covered including a take on the differences in football (soccer) culture between the UK and US and the importance of a “if you don’t ask, you don’t get” attitude.

We also consider the wild jeopardy of British football. Revolving around the concept of promotion and relegation any club can theoretically achieve glory, but any club can face a sharp and painful decline (see Tottenham Hotspur right now).

JT also talks about living in Cheltenham and having a Great Dane dog.

On a wellbeing note, Jonathan admits to finding the dark drizzly days of the British winter difficult - I wasn't raised under the blue never-ending skies of Texas, but I certainly think we fail to acknowledge how challenging a lack of light from November to February can be for our mental health.

Let me know if you enjoy this one. Maybe we should be focussing on that sense of ‘feeling better’ we get after moving (in body and mind) post movement - rather than numbers and scales?

That was one cool thread of my conversation with Harry Bates, a Worcester-based Personal Trainer. He runs The Movement Company with three tiers of engagement: a free run club, group circuits and bespoke one-to-one sessions at his private studio.

In this we discuss:

** For sedentary people why ditching data, wearables, smart watches and SMART goals and just moving could be the key.

** Why combining fitness with community/socialising maximises the benefits of working out.

** Why people realising exercise makes them ‘feel better’ could be the key to getting the population healthier, in body and mind.

** Harry’s pivot from Primary School teacher to fitness pro.

** The difficult of knowing what career to follow for young people and why often the unsure choose teaching as a safe option.

** The challenge for PTS of fitting in their own training when busy with clients.

** Levels of kids movement in primary schools.

More on Harry and his service: https://themovementcompany.co.uk

***********************

Physically and mentally he was as low as you can go. At his nadir he felt like he didn’t want to be here anymore.

Remembering that time is painful for me and everyone else who loves Max. But there’s a huge tale of hope that sprung from that low and it’s in his rise back to health that Max charts in his book Testosterone Decoded.

Max, then a GP in the North East of England had his health and T levels battered by a triple header of testicular cancer, meningitis and chronic stress.

For a long time he didn’t twig about the testosterone. When he did start testosterone replacement therapy his rise from the deepest doldrums was remarkably swift.

In this story then there’s a beacon of optimism for other men brought to their knees because of hormonal imbalance.

I’m biased but I think Max’s book is a brilliant breakdown of what testosterone is, what it gives men, what healthy levels should be and the options to get heathy again. There’s also a frank look at TRT’s downsides, including fertility issues and how potentially to mitigate those.

It’s a book that has enough science to educate medical practitioners and health professionals. But it is written in a simple and punchy way that won’t lose the lay man.

I’m proud of my bro for battling back from bleak ill health, for having the wherewithal to pivot careers, from General Practice into TRT specialist, whilst being a top dad to three young children.

Kudos to his wife, Dr Katy Draper for her part in supporting this transformation too.

I hope you enjoy the chat and I’d really appreciate you considering to buy this book. I was presenting the sport news on the Breakfast Show at Absolute Radio and Simon was playing the same role on Drive Time.

Simon has gone onto work for BBC radio and TV, but his thoughtful and insightful approach to sport and life began to articulate with his very popular podcast Don’t Tell Me The Score.

He now works as a coach and explains his service in these terms: ‘I work from a place of deep presence and focus on helping you clear the blockages that stop you from experiencing the clarity, joy and love that is your essence.’

This may sound a bit woo to some. But I love the idea of sporting flow applied to everyday life, the quest to live in the moment as much as possible. As someone who often thinks about the past and the future, past frustrations set against thinking about upcoming diary commitments, I’ve struggled with this.

Sport for me has always been a way of returning to the moment, but this conversation prompted me to wonder could we view life as sport - centring on trying to execute as well as possible and be present.

This idea of absorption in the moment is included in the theory behind The Triple Tonic workouts I do with clients - yes, we do weights etc, but there’s a lot of balls and rackets involved to keep the people I work with in the moment.

Let me know your thoughts on the ideas we discussed here.

This is a public episode. He’d previously only boxed 4 round contests in the pro ranks.

Louis is also moving up in weight to 168 pounds (12 stone) or super-middleweight in light of the contest having a same-day weigh-in.

Louis tells us about the physical challenges of working as a landscape gardener alongside his fight camp training, the financial outlay he has had over medical checks and licensing and the brass tacks business aspect of the the fight game - including delivering tickets by hand.

I found this a fascinating insight into the life of someone making their way in the early stages of pro boxing and all the factors involved.

At the time of recording Louis had a cold and we talked about the discipline of sometimes stepping off the gas when the body needs to recover.

I’m planning to follow Gloucester Rugby March 28th at Villa Park in the Slater Cup, but I intend to try and get back in time to watch Louis box.

This is a public episode. He was also wrestling with a stammer at the time (which he’s clearly overcome).

This was a very open and two-way conversation with Ollie asking me about my background and what would be my dream sports broadcasting gig.

There is an important thread here on nature and nurture - and what makes an elite athlete. We classically focus on people who devote their entire life to developing a skill, like Tiger Woods, and use that to support the argument practice is key - and we can all practice. But for so many sports, I’m finding there is a huge genetic component - height, speed, strength, durability are required for so many sports - and without those physical gifts only true geniuses can prevail. Think Messi in football

This is a public episode. But you’d never guess it. He came around to my house before Christmas for a coffee and a long chat. He left me feeling invigorated, hopeful and enthused. For what I’m trying to do with the podcast and with my Triple Tonic workouts, for sure. But, also just generally excited for life and reassured there are philanthropists like Andy who are out there trying to connect people.

Andy’s a former cricketer. A wicketkeeper for a decade and a half at Gloucestershire. As it became clear a generational talent called Jack Russell had curtailed his playing opportunities, Brassy transitioned into a role as marketing manager at the club.

He went onto found his sports hospitality business Finders and Keepers in the late 90s and it’s still going strong: https://www.finderskeepersuk.com

Maybe from his sporting background, or his business experience or maybe just how he’s made, but Andy has a keen awareness of the importance of conversation and connection. And during the Covid pandemic he founded the charity Walkers and Talkers. These are FREE events - initially based at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club but now taking place across the country - which hosts talks from (unpaid) celebrities while encouraging people to talk and walk alongside each other.

Again, I don’t know many people who could pull this all off at 21. Let alone 71. But Andy is an inspiring ball of energy. And his mission to connect people, reflected in his opinion that an email is only of value after a face-to-face conversation, or worst case a phone call, is powerful. At a time of increasing loneliness and technology-induced disconnection, this is an important public health message too.

I hope you enjoy this. And maybe you’ll be moved to make a call off the back of it?

To contact Andy, you can email: andy@finderskeepersuk.com

This is a public episode. It was their first and only, to date, time at The European Championship.

Paul Gilmour was a firsthand bystander to the squad’s exploits in qualifying and then in the tournament itself in France. He was the dedicated team reporter for Sky Sports News.

It would have been a memorable assignment for any football person. But particularly poignant for Paul who hails from Northern Ireland. He wasn’t born when his country qualified for the 1958 and 1982 World Cups. He was barely born when they made the World Cup in Mexico in 86.

But in 2016 he was front and centre to cover a joyous time for his country. The team won only one of four games played in the tournament but made indelible memories, particularly the cacophonous singing of ‘Will Grigg is on fire!” Even though Grigg didn't get on the pitch during Euro 2016!

It’s a classic old school soccer story. But a very human one too. Hope you enjoy!

       Go well and keep moving,

         Teddy

     ********

Partner Details

Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-street

Info on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at -

https://www.herringshoes.co.uk

For 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing: Check out the intro to the podcast.

For a 10% discount with GHS Cheltenham Clinics’ Health Checks - https://ghsclinics.health, contact me: teddy@drapermedia.co.uk

This is a public episode. But I’ve founding sleeping well on a regular basis to be a bit of a challenge. Shift work as a sports broadcaster - 2am get-ups in close proximity to 2am bedtimes - hasn’t helped. But fundamentally sleeping is the anti-do: relaxation isn’t something you can force through with discipline or the ability to form behavioural habits.

And the more you think or worry about sleep - or document it with technology - the harder it can seem to actually relax enough to nod off. This reality in a world where we’re being bombarded with information about how important sleep is to our short-term daily performance and chances of long-term good health can be anxiety-inducing. And again counterproductive to sleep!

In this context, I found restorative sleep coach Holly Hannigan-Mills’ approach to helping people get good kip refreshing and useful. Taking away that jeopardy and sense of doom seems to be key and that general acceptance that we won’t always get a good night’s sleep - but we’ll be all right - is a cathartic attitude shift.

The conversation also includes some very practical tips about how to create a restful feeling in the evening - including getting daylight in the morning. Plus we do talk about how to navigate sleep patterns when you’re doing variable shift patterns.

I met Holly when undertaking the Second Prime health assessment at GHS Clinics - https://ghsclinics.health/services/sleep-programme/ - and she also has her own private practice: https://hmcoaching.uk with close to 10 years experience helping people sleep.

Follow Holly on Instagram for more advice: https://www.instagram.com/_hm.coaching

      **************************************

Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-street

Info on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at -

https://www.herringshoes.co.uk

For 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing: Check out the intro to the podcast.

This is a public episode. Running (or initially jogging or just shuffling) is a great starting point for people looking to get moving and carries huge physiological and psychological upsides. But it can come with concerns over joint pain, injury etc.

Katie is herself working her way back to running after a knee issue so great to pick her brains on a variety of running themes:

    1) Is Running good for us?

    2) What surface should we run on?

     3) How does running on the ground compare to the treadmill?

      4) What are the mental benefits of running (particularly, running outdoors)?

     5) Footwear - how important and what type of shoe should we look at? Is it nature or nurture?

Usually we conclude that it’s a bit of both. But I certainly got the sense that Jack Clement may have been genetically predisposed to playing pro rugby. He didn’t even play the game until the age of 14 and within a couple of years was representing England in his age group.

This is also a brilliant story of serendipity - he only wound up discovering his aptitude for rugby after winning a scholarship to the very prestigious Cheltenham College.

Jack is still only in his mid 20s, but a sharp cookie. We talk about the importance of a positive proactive mindset when recovering from injury in rugby - injuries are a part of life in this rugged sport - and the psychology of still wanting the ball when results aren’t great and confidence is low.

Jack is also aware of the shortness of a rugby career and is sagely studying for a second career in finance.

I hope you enjoy this one. Go well and keep moving. Turns out they’re not all that different to humans.

It was illuminating then to chat with Max Kendrick - an ex jockey who know helps training horses at Fergal O’Brien’s picturesque yard near Cheltenham.

Max is doing pioneering work with horse heart rate monitors, that also track metics like the speed of the horse and distance covered. This gives insight that will help trainers coax horses to peak performance, but also from an animal welfare perspective make sure the horses aren’t overtrained.

Pretty cool to hear Max talk about how the data is often backing up old school trainers’ ‘feel’ for how the horses are.

Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-street

Info on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at - https://www.herringshoes.co.uk

For 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing check out the intro the podcast.

This is a public episode. Interviewed About the Triple Tonic Workout

Hello, I hope you’re well.

This pod is a little bit different. In it I’m answering questions, which as someone who has asked them for 20 years on radio, TV and podcasts always feels slightly odd. I believe this is useful though re mental and physical health and fitness. I qualified as a personal trainer a few years back, but alongside my sports broadcasting career have developed a slightly different training service for clients in Cheltenham: The Triple Tonic is based on three health pillars: movement, fresh air and conversation.

My sister-in-law Kerry Halloran kindly offered to (gently!) quiz me about the evidence behind each pillar, how I fastened onto this approach and how I track clients’ progress.

Also we talk more about the nuance of each workout and how I incorporate balls, rackets, jump boxes, kettlebells agility ladders and more while getting clients fitter and stronger in the great outdoors.

If you’re in Cheltenham and want to get out there with me, or live elsewhere and want some remote fitness coaching there is more info here: https://drapermedia.co.uk/the-triple-tonic

Part one of my conversation with Kerry is above. We worked together covering rugby at Sky Sports and have both presented Sky Sports News. But this a man who wears many hats and seems to do very well whichever one he’s sporting that moment.

Alex still does ad hoc rugby presenting on TV - most recently The Lions tour of Australia for Sky - but is arguably better known for hosting the hugely successful podcast - The Good, The Bad and The Rugby:

Alex and his pod buddies, England legends Mike Tindall and James Haskell, have created a gin - the proceeds of which help grassroots rugby and research into injury prevention and care: https://blackeyegin.co.uk

Even that’s not enough to sate his appetite for work though! Alex has also helped build a tech business that pairs social media influencers with brands: https://www.theinfluenceroom.com.

But Alex in his very candid way admits he doesn't really use social media because it distracts him from his many jobs. He doesn't have the apps on his phone.

I loved this conversation, in large part due to Alex’s openness and willingness to chat about the complexities and contradictions of the world that's in front of us. I do find it very interesting that most of the successful people I know don’t spend much time scrolling on social media. I think kicking that vice will be big for me. How about you?

One thing’s for sure - as I too navigate the early steps of a similar path away from full-time broadcasting - Alex’s example is an inspiring one. Danny for a long time was head of medical services at Everton Football Club, but now works in one-to-one coaching of players and managers.

We talk about Danny’s approach in helping players’ mental approach to the game - including visualisation, meditation and switching off social media. Connected to this we talked about how lonely being a player and manager can be - and how, inadvertently, sports science (by ending drinking/socialising culture etc) has potentially reduced connection.

We discuss Danny’s reflections on former Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti and current boss David Moyes and also his experience of Newcastle star Anthony Gordon’s mental strength.

We talk about Danny’s father, Willie, a professional footballer and how he opened Danny’s eyes to ‘alternative’ methods of self development.

A lot of ground covered here and a lot of insight into professional football. But also I believe some important notes on how we can all make improve our mental experience of life, find the joy in what we do, and perform better (if that’s our goal).

What do you think about this one? His dribbling… his power… his passing… his smile. When I look back at think of watching him play, I smile. But the smile is often followed by a slight sinking sense that we missed out. For Gazza left UK shores in the summer of 1991, aged just 24 and with knee ligament damage following a self-inflicted injury in the early stages of the FA Cup Final.

After his time in Italy, Gazza bedazzled Rangers fans but didn't return to English football until his 30s. He was still class, but the burst of power and pace and effervescence had dimmed.

And so I wonder if that heady day at Wembley in April 1991 when Spurs, big underdogs, bested their arch rivals Arsenal (best team in England at the time), represented peak Paul Gascoigne?

If so, it’s still hard to make sense more than 30 years on - because Gazza was so good, Gazzamania so intense, that, as a boy, I felt he was destined to write an epic footballing story on these shores.

What are your memories of Gazza? That match?

I suppose we should smile because it happened. It was privilege to watch him in that season, in particular.

Please note - podcast features new partnership with Herringshoes - and you get 15% of all shoes with the discount code SPORTANDLIFE .

https://www.herringshoes.co.uk

This is a public episode. One of my Personal Training coaches during my training, Ross also works in combat sports.

Ross is a deep thinker and candid. But please be WARNED we discuss serious issues like mental health and suicide here so please skip if you don’t feel like listening to that right now.

What Ross has struck upon is the reverse of discipline - whereas most people chide themselves for not having the consistency to workout, some people just can’t NOT workout. They don’t do it to feel good, they do it to feel less bad about themselves - it’s a should rather than ‘I get to.’ That nagging feeling can drain other life pursuits of joy and, for me, at times has caused me stress because I’ve tried to shoehorn workouts into an already full day.

We also talk about male body dysmorphia and how a healthy goal to improve our physique can be hijacked by an impossible quest for perfection.

Let me know your thoughts on this one. It’s a delicate one, in my opinion, because being healthy in the modern world requires some kind of mental drive - most people’s jobs don’t include movement or daylight, for example - but that drive has to be managed and balance sought.

This is a public episode. I think talking about these things are significant - not feeling awkward. I know from my wife and daughter that how I act and communicate - boisterously at times - can be overbearing, but I also recognise that I need some of the aggressive male banter to feel ‘well’. A bluntness and coarseness is strangely heart warming to me, but is not always appreciated by the women in my life! In that context, we talked too about the need for occasional all-female and all-male socialising.

How do you feel about it? Would you be prepared, if you’re a man, to make a lone women feel safer by crossing the road?
