Kolodny explains that the turbines emit smog-forming pollutants and particulate matter, including nitrogen oxides. These chemicals cause lung cancer and other lung diseases, and they’re markers for other chemical pollutants such as benzene, a powerful carcinogen. The NAACP is seeking injunctive relief and for these companies to “cease operating the Colossus gas plant unless and until they obtain the required permits to apply the necessary pollution controls and to pay appropriate civil penalties for each day of violation.”

The company is planning to build another AI center, named Macrohardrr, in Southavent, which will use 41 natural-gas-burning turbines to power the data centers.

The problem is that bad companies, terrible companies like xAI, cut corners, and they use you and me as sacrifices, so Memphis is like Cancer Alley, and portions of Memphis will now become sacrifice zones. The company really appears to have made little effort to curb its emissions.

Three thousand to three thousand nine hundred new data centers are planned or under construction across the US, representing a significant expansion from the current approximately four thousand centers nationwide. Texas, Virginia, and Georgia lead in new data center commitments, and the surge is being driven by hyperscalers like Microsoft, which is building a 3.2 million-square-foot AI factory in Wisconsin, and Meta, with its AI center in Louisiana. Currently, the electricity demand from AI-specific applications is estimated to be less than one percent of global electricity use.

But the most important implications are here in the United States. We host about half of the world’s data centers, and they use about 4 percent of US electricity, but projections for just a few years from now, in 2030, range from nearly five percent to nine percent. Now, a large increase in electricity doesn’t have to result in a large increase in greenhouse gas emissions; AI companies can be very tech-savvy and come up with solutions too when we guide them and that’s my point here is that you and I need to be involved in this situation in Congress and at the state and local level because these idiots need our guidance, because we’re the smart ones. We’re the adults.

You see, a significant portion of the electricity powering data centers today comes from zero-carbon sources such as wind and solar, which is great, and that’s because of large corporate power purchase agreements signed by leading data center operators, including Amazon, Meta, and Google. Microsoft has an agreement with Brookfield Renewables to buy 10 gigawatts of renewable energy starting this year, and a separate agreement with Constellation Energy to buy nearly 1 gigawatt of nuclear power. Well, I’m not for nuclear power. See, that’s what I mean. We need to be guiding things here because nuclear power, if you put it in the wrong place, is gonna cause cancer among the people, and if you put it near a town like Mooresville, North Carolina, it’s gonna really cause thyroid cancers, because nuclear power and coal ash, which that town is filled with literally, become synergistic when it comes to cancer. So I’m not for nuclear. What I am for is better technology, and you and I guiding companies to do that. A new AI data center may be coming to your town. Stay involved. Make your voice heard

The House Agriculture Committee voted 34 to 17 on March 5, 2026, advancing the Farm Bill with its pesticide-shield provisions to the full House, reports E&E News.

All Republicans on the committee voted in favor, along with seven Democrats. I am putting the mobilization information you need to make your voice heard up front here. Read this and go to that site. Do both. Get educated. Get motivated. This is the big one right now.

If you are a constituent of these Democrats who joined Republicans in voting “Yes,” you need to contact them to let them know how you feel about things like your health, your kids’ health, and putting our nation’s health above corporate profits. Make America Healthy Again (MAHA), unlike MAGA as it has morphed, is nonpartisan and grounded in principles and beliefs. MAHA cares about issues beyond politics and sees these as test markers for elected representatives and appointed officials. As for these 27 Republicans, they all need to go, too. Do any of these below look familiar? Well, call them. Tell them they need to vote for MAHA.

The current Farm Bill is the most significant piece of legislation affecting the American food system — and it’s loaded with gifts for the food and agricultural industry. And loads of contaminated veggies and other foods that will give us cancer, infertility, and cognitive loss.

The current version of the bill contains numerous provisions that would threaten public health and the environment, including language that would shield pesticide companies from lawsuits, making it harder for people suffering from cancer and other illnesses associated with pesticide exposure to prevail in court.

The farm bill follows an executive order from President Donald J. Trump seeking to boost phosphate mining in the US in order to support glyphosate production — also known as Roundup, the cancer-linked herbicide at the center of thousands of lawsuits.

Section 10205 in the Farm Bill draft (released Friday, February 13) threatens the right of citizens to sue chemical manufacturers for the harm caused by their toxic products and their failure to warn about those hazards.

“Litigation has always been a tool for holding manufacturers accountable for the damages they cause, providing an important check on the marketing of products not adequately regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),” notes my colleague, Jay Feldman, executive director of the advocacy group Beyond Pesticides. “While this has always been of fundamental importance, it is especially critical during the current dismantling of EPA and the current deregulation of the industry. Instead of destroying incentives to ensure corporate responsibility, Congress through the Farm Bill should be facilitating the transition to ecological-based practices, like federally defined organic methods, that address the existential health, biodiversity, and climate issues of our time.”

Beyond Pesticides also notes that aside from violating this basic right to be warned of product hazards, the legislation contains Section 10206, which preempts local governments’ authority to protect their residents from pesticide exposure, as determined by the state government (reversing a 1991 Supreme Court decision). Furthermore, Section 10207 exempts registered pesticides from any further “permitting or approval requirements,” which could include permits to restrict pesticides under the Clean Water Act, requirements for an environmental impact statement under the National Environmental Policy Act, or requirements to meet review standards under the Endangered Species Act.

“Another dangerous provision represents an unprecedented federal overreach into states’ rights by overturning California’s Proposition 12, which bans some of the most extreme forms of animal confinement,” says Friends of the Earth. “It would invalidate hundreds of state and local laws that protect food safety, safeguard the environment, and advance more humane agricultural standards. Another provision would prevent local governments from regulating pesticides, reversing decades of precedent, leaving the choice up to individual states.”

“Rather than address the economic crises facing America’s family farmers, this Farm Bill is a thinly veiled gift bag for Big Ag and pesticide manufacturers. It’s a massive slap in the face to people across the political spectrum demanding a healthier food system,” said Jason Davidson, Senior Food and Agriculture Campaigner with Friends of the Earth U.S. “From legal immunity for pesticide manufacturers to undoing groundbreaking pesticide and animal welfare protections at the state and local levels, House Agriculture Republicans’ bill would line the pockets of some of the worst polluters in our food system. Instead of channeling billions to Big Ag’s toxic products and factory farms, Congress should invest in helping farmers transition to organic and regenerative agriculture. We urge Democrats to reject this poison-pill package and demand a Farm Bill that truly supports family farmers and a healthier food future.”

Friends of the Earth has signed on to this letter rejecting the current draft and posted an analysis, New Corporate Welfare Farm Bill Stuffed with Poison Pills, which further outlines some of the worst provisions that benefit pesticide manufacturers and other large agriculture companies. It also identifies some of the bills that, if included in the Farm Bill, would support a transition to a healthier and more just food system.

He frequently labels wind turbines as “windmills,” complaining they ruin landscapes, kill birds, are inefficient, and lower property values. His disdain began after losing a legal battle against offshore turbines near his Scottish golf course.

He frequently labels wind turbines as “windmills,” complaining they ruin landscapes, kill birds, are inefficient, and lower property values. His disdain began after losing a legal battle in 2012 over offshore turbines in Aberdeen Bay near his Scottish golf course, which he described as an “ugly cloud” ruining the view.

Surprise, surprise.

He’s lying.

And his folly comes at the worst time, when the world’s tensions are heightened by relying so heavily on oil.

“China makes almost all the windmills, and yet I haven’t been able to find any wind farms in China. Do you ever think of that? … They sell them to the stupid people that buy them. But they don’t use them themselves,” Trump said in January 2026 at the World Economic Forum.

Here’s why Trump is really one of the stupidest.

In fact, China leads the world by a wide margin not only in manufacturing but also in total installed wind power capacity and new installations, accounting for over a third of global wind energy generation. In 2024, Chinese manufacturers occupied six of the top 10 spots for global turbine manufacturing. China accounted for roughly 65 percent of new wind power installed globally in 2023, far exceeding other regions. As of 2024, China had over 521,000 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity, with the world’s largest onshore wind farm, the Gansu Wind Farm, located in Gansu province. In other words, China has the most wind farms in the world. They are cornering the lucrative wind trade. Wind power provided approximately 10 percent of China’s total electricity generation in 2024, as part of a massive, rapid expansion in renewable energy. By 2035, China aims to increase its combined wind and solar capacity to at least 3,600 gigawatts (GW), over six times 2020 levels, with experts suggesting this could realistically exceed 4,500 GW. Wind and solar combined are projected to supply roughly 49 percent to 56 percent of China’s total electricity consumption by that time

The US ranks second in total capacity, trailing significantly behind China. Germany is third. India holds a strong fourth position in total installed capacity. China’s capacity is more than double that of the United States, its closest competitor.

Political and regulatory headwinds in 2025 and 2026 have led to a collapse in new offshore projects, prompting global investors to pivot toward Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Just today, the administration redirected $1 billion from wind energy investments to oil and gas drilling, reports Fox. It isn’t that we shouldn’t have any oil or gas. But we have plenty of room for all forms of energy, and it is a huge mistake to discount renewables given their large environmental and economic benefits.

We should be growing wind and renewables here, too. We have no job growth in America. But, based on reports from early 2025–2026, the Trump administration’s actions against wind power — including, according to the Center for American Progress, this article from The Guardian, and this article from the Maine Morning Star — have created significant uncertainty, with over 17,000 jobs in the offshore wind industry considered to be connected to projects that were paused, canceled, or at risk as of summer 2025.

No technology comes without risks, including renewables. But the environmental footprint of wind farms is so much less than that of oil and gas. Carbon emissions and pollutants that kill my friends in Cancer Alley and nearby areas are nearly eliminated.

Trump has cited bird deaths before in his complaints about wind power, once falsely claiming that turbines “kill more than 1 million birds a year,” which Factcheck.org previously debunked. Says the organization, “According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, annual bird deaths from turbines range from as low as 21,000 to 679,000 — numbers that are well below the billions of estimated bird deaths from cats or the hundreds of millions from collisions with vehicles or buildings. The median value is 328,000.

“This time, Trump implied that a single turbine might kill thousands of birds. Given that there are about 58,000 turbines in the United States, even going with the larger estimate, basic math would suggest that each turbine is responsible for about 12 birds a year. And reports suggest the death toll doesn’t go even that high.

“A 2013 study by biologists at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service used data from 68 studies published between 2000 and 2012 to estimate the number of bird deaths from wind turbines. The group found that across the United States, the average number of bird deaths per turbine per year was just over five. That’s slightly more than one bird every season.

“Of course, some turbines, whether due to height, design or location, take more avian lives than others. But in the 2013 study, even the worst-offending wind facility was responsible for killing fewer than 21 birds per turbine per year. Therefore, it’s extremely unlikely one would ever come across more than a handful of dead birds at any one time at the base of a turbine — certainly not thousands, as Trump claims.”

The thing about bird kills that Trump likes to bring up is being solved with AI. Wind farms are using AI to detect incoming flocks of birds and automatically turn off the turbines when birds are in their flight paths. Wind farms are being situated in non-migratory areas, or turbines are placed at heights that allow free access.

Yes, advancements in renewable energy could significantly lessen tensions in the Middle East around the Strait of Hormuz by reducing global dependence on oil and gas transported through this narrow chokepoint. By promoting energy independence, renewable sources like solar and wind directly counter the leverage that regional conflict can exert on global energy prices.

How you live is a statement. Make your shopping choices count. But also make your vote count. In this case, we need leaders who understand that a healthy nation requires a healthy mix of energy supplies. We should be leading the world in renewables, not falling behind. There will be a healthier environment and wealthier people to come when we do.

I reviewed California’s pesticide monitoring records for my new book, Raising Healthy Kids: Protecting Your Children from Hidden Chemical Toxins. Both thiabendazole and imazalil appear frequently on products sold in markets. These fungicides prevent mold, so they do have an important role. But they come with significant risks.

Imazalil and thiabendazole, along with chlorpyrifos, have been detected in significant concentrations within breast tumor tissues, suggesting a potential link between environmental exposure and carcinogenesis. The study on pesticide mixtures, reflecting high exposure to chlorpyrifos, imazalil, malathion, and thiabendazole, found an increased risk, but also a lower risk for women with the lowest exposure to synthetic pesticides. That suggests that reducing your exposure to hidden chemical toxins works.

“The long-term exposure and consumption of fruits and vegetables treated with fungicides can increase the risks of developing genotoxic tumors,” say researchers in the April 2025 edition of Food. They add, “Our findings raise new questions about the health risks of fungicides and their mixtures to consumers. Further investigations are essential to explore the genotoxicological effects of fungicides on citrus peels.”

“I support President Trump’s Executive Order to bring agricultural chemical production back to the United States and end our near-total reliance on adversarial nations,” Kennedy wrote. “When hostile actors control critical inputs, they directly threaten the security of the American people. The Trump administration will secure these supply chains to eliminate that vulnerability.”

But this is all a big lie by an ignorant killer who lacks normal empathy and secretly wants to see kids die from measles; he is that dark. The Bureau of Land Management approved the Caldwell Canyon Phosphate Mine last October, allowing Bayer to continue accumulating and refining phosphate needed to manufacture glyphosate. Plus, some 40 percent of the world’s glyphosate is already produced here in America. In addition, there is no weak link — except for the tens of thousands of cancers it has caused.

Bayer (via its subsidiary Monsanto) has mining and production facilities in Idaho, Iowa, and Louisiana. The new mine in Idaho assures a long-term supply of phosphorus for decades. All of this has occurred during the Trump administration, rather than focusing on safer, equally, if not more productive, methods of crop production without this dangerous herbicide. As an example, laser weeders are generally safe and environmentally sustainable alternatives to herbicides, utilizing high-powered lasers to destroy weed meristems without damaging crops or soil. Higher standards lead to safer technology.

MAHA has come to a crossroads. The MAHA movement is against Big Pharma and vaccines and Big Agriculture, but with its largely white female leadership, has become identified as leaning Republican or MAGA. It can’t and retain its own credibility. Trump and Kennedy have proven it cannot. Both have betrayed MAHA moms across America.

My suggestion is to remember that we have permanent interests that won’t be compromised, and to support politicians who consistently support healthy food and a healthy environment. I am working with Democrats and Republicans alike. Michael Nichols, a conservationist Republican, is taking on House Speaker Mike Johnson in Louisiana. Mike will be a real conservative and not a MAGA nihilist like Johnson. I recently had him on the Heartland Podcast to showcase his positions as an OG Republican.

I am outraged and saddened, aren’t you? Our president just declared that glyphosate, the herbicide known commercially as Roundup, is needed for our national security. Bayer donated $1 million to Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, according to Health Policy Watch. He doesn’t care about MAHA. He took care of his corporate friends, not us.

The nepo baby is supporting the orange blob. RFK Jr. backed the president in a statement to CNBC Thursday morning. “Donald Trump’s Executive Order puts America first where it matters most — our defense readiness and our food supply,” he said. “We must safeguard America’s national security first, because all of our priorities depend on it. When hostile actors control critical inputs, they weaken our security. By expanding domestic production, we close that gap and protect American families.”

CNBC observed, “Now, the executive order threatens to unravel that coalition ahead of the 2026 midterm elections that could loosen the president’s grip on Washington.”

My message is that I pray MAHA sees the administration and its Nepo Baby for what they are: useful idiots, at best. If MAHA leadership wants to use them to achieve the movement’s healthy living goals, it’s still the fruit of the poisoned tree, and MAHA’s support for the orange blob was counter to our mission for a healthy American politic, which is sick and won’t be cured with anyone who is MAGA. The orange blob and the Nepo baby are bad for America because the latter supports the Mad Queen’s insanity, amorality, lack of love, empathy, and caring, and even a fundamental understanding of what this country is really about. He showed he has no spine even when the blob illegally renamed the Kennedy Center. We have a measles epidemic that we shouldn’t have, and he thinks kids are better off getting sick and surviving the measles. I don’t believe in either of them.

But I believe in the work I am doing and in the anti-toxic movement, whether you call it MAHA, conservation, anti-plastic, healthy living, or simply environmental health.

Michael Cohen, the former fixer for the orange blob now occupying the presidency, is losing subscribers by the thousands, dropping from around 550,000 to about 492,000. That is because, ever since the Epstein files came out, Michael has failed to respond immediately to what should have been a molehill, instead turning it into a mountain of deceit. MeidasTouch cut him off and stopped airing his Political Beatdown and Mea Culpa podcasts. MeidasTouch did that because their leaders have a moral core. You know where they stand.

People know Cohen is a fake. That he has no moral core. What’s more, his podcast lacks informed primary sources and gets the news just like the rest of us, so Michael has, for the most part, moved to pure commentary. But what do the words of a commentator mean when you know he is a broken man who stands for nothing in particular other than his own financial gain? I don’t think he loves America. He may think he does. But he isn’t a coherent man and can’t possibly initiate the rock of love. For Michael, he wants back in with MAGA to get those big-money deals, like he did when he was the president’s personal attorney. He said so on a recent podcast. I still watch them occasionally, but mainly to see how low his subscriber count will go.

Recently, he went on the Patrick Bet-David podcast to speak directly to the orange blob, since he knows the orange blob watches the show. He told the orange blob he never really wanted to testify. He just wanted someone to reach out and hug him. He could have taken a hit like others have, if he had known he would be taken care of later. He made it clear that he wanted to return to the fold, to MAGA, that immoral darkness surrounding the nation.

Recently, I listened to Mea Culpa. He sat down with Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, senior associate dean at Yale School of Management, founder of the Chief Executive Leadership Institute, and author of the forthcoming book Trump’s Ten Commandments, to examine Donald Trump’s leadership style through the lens of corporate power and institutional behavior. Cohen had just been invited by Sonnenfeld to speak to leaders of some 700 institutions of higher learning across America about how to handle the orange blob’s attacks on their freedoms and diversity that academic institutions should be able to enjoy under our Constitution. I was shocked, but I shouldn’t have been, as Cohen recommended capitulation. Oh my God. Yes, he did. Cohen restated his fundamental position: capitulation. He literally told these 700 leaders of the nation’s most prestigious and important academic institutions that if Trump came after them, they should give in and accept his deal. He gave his reasoning and basically said that if you don’t, he will increase his demand from, say, $200 million to $500 million. It only gets worse. He’s so stupid. Because really, once institutions stood up to the blob, they would win, Sonnenfeld argued. The only ones who suffered were those who followed Cohen’s advice. I mean, this man makes wrong turns. Don’t follow him.

The orange blob governs through intimidation and retaliation and is unable to accept loss, Cohen notes. Then adds, So just give in.

Michael’s show notes ask whether appeasement by universities, corporations, and civic institutions accelerates democratic erosion, risks normalizing coercion, and whether collective resistance remains one of the most effective counterweights to abuse of power. Yes. Yes, they do.

His own case shows that standing up to the bully works. You don’t hear of Trump going after institutions of higher education anymore. They stood up to him. But Cohen advocates submission to the orange blob. He doesn’t know what this fight is about.

Michael Cohen gets it wrong, fundamentally, as a commentator because he doesn’t have any kind of firm footing in what is good and unshakeable.

The Donald J. Trump administration is rolling back protections for our children. They are deregulating chemicals, and dangerous ones like the herbicide Dicamba have been let back into society to cause more cancer and endocrine disruption among our children while being used on staple crops like soy and corn. The Trump administration is trying to take away our right to sue pesticide manufacturers when their products harm us. They are deregulating pollutants spewed from factory smokestacks, which cause learning problems and kidney disease among local residents. They are pedophile conspirators and are dirty in their souls.

They don’t care if their policies are filling up our children’s bodies with phthalates, PFAS, glyphosate, bisphenols, pesticides, and endocrine disruptors until their tiny bodies are misshapened and they are no longer able to reproduce.

No one in government is protecting you. Instead, it’s left to journalists and researchers like me. In my new book, I share how to make sure your child’s school environment is safe and tell the story of Andrea and Joe Amico. They were full of hope and anticipation when they decided to move from Massachusetts to the Seacoast region of New Hampshire in 2007. The couple wanted to be closer to Joe’s workplace, where he worked as a visual designer at a business located at the Pease Tradeport in Portsmouth.

Twenty miles of sandy beaches and rocky headlands, from Salisbury, Massachusetts, in the south, to the Piscataqua River and Kittery, up north in Maine, made for stunning sights driving the last stretch to their new hometown.

Four years later, in 2011, Andrea and Joe welcomed their first child. After months on the waiting list, they were thrilled to learn of an opening at Great Bay Kids Co., one of the two daycare centers next door to Andrea’s husband’s workplace. Joe could drop off their daughter and pick her up.

“It was a beautiful facility with brightly colored classrooms and loving teachers,” Andrea recalled. “Joe could see the window of our daughter’s classroom from his office and would stop by on his lunch break to feed her a bottle or take her for a walk.”

Their second child, a son, was born in 2013. Like his older sister, he started daycare at 12 weeks old.

In May 2014, on a Friday before Memorial Day, the Portsmouth Herald newspaper reported high levels of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), used for firefighting at military installations, had been found in the Haven Well that supplied drinking water to her husband’s office and kids’ daycare at the Pease Tradeport. PFAS are clear-cut carcinogens at multiple sites, toxic to the liver and kidney, and endocrine disruptors that interfere with sexual maturation and change the morphology of our children when they are exposed at high normal levels.

“I thought of my husband and two small children who were on Pease for work and daycare every day and drinking the water,” Andrea said and paused, reliving a primal feeling of personal guilt.

Andrea remained quiet and listened, seated alone in the very back row at the first community meeting that local and state public officials hosted to discuss the issue of PFAS in the town’s well. One after another, so-called experts told everyone that the presence of PFAS in their children’s water posed minimal risk. Andrea felt compelled to ask questions and wanted to know if there would be blood testing to see who had been exposed. No, they weren’t going to test anybody, she was told. No, it was too expensive. Not needed. It’s not routine.

But nothing was routine anymore, and it was not all right.

Andrea was certain of two things. That first meeting would not and could not be the last. And she would no longer sit in the back of the room and take it.

But there was also a lot to learn.

“Pease was one of the first communities in the nation to learn its members had been exposed to high levels of PFAS as a result of the military’s longstanding use of aqueous film-forming firefighting foam,” Andrea told me with a voice fueled with anger, pain, and resolution. “I was totally out there dealing with the unknown. Most of all, we needed to know what to do to monitor our health and be proactive in diagnosing and treating adverse health effects that might result from our PFAS exposure, and no one would help us with that.”

Andrea began engaging with the health department about testing and addressing her concerns about the potential long-term effects of PFAS on her children and husband. But after seven months of trying to get answers, Andrea and her family felt the sting of a non-responsive, uncaring, and unhelpful public agency.

Things changed, though, when Andrea contacted New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen in Washington, D.C., who became actively involved and made the necessary calls to complete the testing. Then, in early 2015, Andrea shared her story in the Portsmouth Herald.

“The article led to a chain reaction and jump-started the movement that finally led to PFAS blood testing for the community,” Andrea said.

Andrea and her family had been at Lake Winnipesaukee, the most expansive inland body of water in the state, for a few fun days in July 2015, when they got home, tired but happy. Joe was lugging in their bags filled with wet towels, and the dogs were barking.

Andrea spotted four large, yellow envelopes mixed in with the rest of the mail on the kitchen counter. A lump stuck in her throat, and a pit formed in her stomach. She opened each with dread.

Joe and the children had high levels of PFAS in their blood. Their daughter, Sophia, then almost five (now twelve), had the highest.

“I will never stop worrying about the health of my children, and I will forever live with the guilt I unknowingly sent them to a daycare center where they drank contaminated water,” Andrea told me, remorsefully. “When I stop to think about just how contaminated the water was my family drank and compare it to the updated Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advisories, it is daunting and heartbreaking my young children were exposed to that much poison and they will live with these chemicals in their body and may experience subsequent health effects from what they drank as babies and toddlers at daycare. It’s incredibly unfair to all of the Pease community members who were contaminated without consent — poisoned without permission. My family members are guinea pigs in an experiment we did not sign up for. It makes me mad and feel guilty all at the same time. But it’s what fuels me to keep fighting, too. There’s so much work to be done.”

Andrea cofounded the community action group Testing for Pease with two other mothers, Alayna Davis and Michelle Dalton. Their work quickly evolved into advocating for the entire Pease community to better understand the long-term health impacts of PFAS exposure. Their advocacy led to the nation’s first federally funded PFAS study to monitor the health effects on the Pease families.

Contaminated drinking water is just one of the stealth issues confronting schoolchildren today. Most kids don’t have much choice in which school they attend. Yet, they spend some seven hours a day there. That’s more than one thousand hours a year. More time accrues if children participate in before- or after-school programs.

It’s common sense that we shouldn’t build schools on or near toxic waste sites and factories, especially since we know how damaging pollution is to academic performance. But we do so all of the time.

We shouldn’t be spraying herbicides and pesticides on campuses either, given all of the neurological damage they do to school-age children. But pesticides are widely used, including on the grounds of our colleges and universities.

Reducing each student’s toxic exposures should be part of the new core curriculum for every school. But it is up to you, as a parent, to be sure your child’s school environment is not toxic.

Share your stories, talk to other parents, support organic meals and local farm to school programs; advocate for policies that prioritize kids’ health and avoid the use of herbicides on athletic fields. Our children deserve a future free from hidden threats. By making informed choices today, we can help build that healthier tomorrow.

Now, we are experiencing a government shutdown since MAGA Mike sent his minions home last week, and the Senate refused to pass the omnibus bill that the House approved.

Senator Chuck Schumer doesn’t seem to grasp the seriousness of what is at stake. He’s still about the process. He doesn’t see the dark forest in which we are trapped. I mean, the only reason DHS funding has been withheld — and that was what held up passage — is that it took two shootings in Minneapolis to make Schumer and other Senate Democrats realize how badly the people’s guaranteed rights are being trampled. Two shootings? Are you serious? Didn’t you think that Portland was bad enough? Didn’t you think that breaking into homes was bad enough? Detaining citizens and then dumping them on the side of the road? Incarcerating five-year-old children? Raising schools? Churches? What about withholding emergency disaster funds from various states?

No, the government needs to stop until we, the people, get back our rights. If it were me, given how I feel, I would seriously examine how to abolish and replace DHS, but for the moment, a drastic pullback in DHS funding is necessary, quite apart from restraining them.

Schumer’s demands are so mild, so unequal to the damage being done. His demands would require DHS to use $20 million to outfit immigration enforcement agents with body cameras, direct the department to provide officers with more training in de-escalating public interactions, and allocate a separate $20 million for independent oversight of DHS detention facilities, according to Politico. No, take their money away. Strip them of their ability to recruit. We don’t need more of the good squad, do we?

But what good will it do? I mean, when has a Trump agency ever obeyed the law? Look at the Epstein files. The legislation Congress passed required its complete delivery by December 19. We are something like three million pages away from their delivery, and we don’t know how many illegal redactions have been executed to protect Tramp and his pedo predators. Maybe the Democrats couldn’t stop the Big Fucked Up Bill that overfunded DHS. But, hell, I’m in California, and we contribute more money to other red states than they do to us. We are givers. They are takers. Yet, the president is withholding disaster funding from our state. Billions and billions of dollars. So why aren’t California senators withholding their vote on any DHS funding? Why don’t they connect the dots? The money comes from DHS — or it should. Funding cuts are not enough. Nor are restraints since Trump feels no compulsion to obey the law.

The government needs to go through a shutdown. Our rights are being trampled. And it won’t stop with the withdrawal from Minneapolis. He’s a sick, demented human, and he keeps attacking his own people because of the color of their skin, their beliefs, or their intelligence. He wants dumb ass Americans. Do you really think that putting restrictions on these goons will stop them? He’s going to pardon them all before he leaves. We should expect that. It’s better to stop everything.

I know you have these thoughts too. That’s why I am sharing mine: to build support and gain strength.

Folks, every time someone brings up how Trump’s goons are trampling our First, Second, Fourth, and other Constitutional rights, the cos-playing head of Department of Homeland (in)Security (DHS), Kristi Noem, tells us her thugs are catching all the child molesters, rapists, and criminals. In fact, I’ve seen reports that only about 5% of arrests in Minnesota are for actual felony criminals. The rest are either our citizens, people in the process of becoming citizens, or undocumented people who are not violent or even pernicious criminals. Florida’s new “Gag Law” (Section 48 of SB 290) is intended to silence doctors, journalists, scientists, influencers, and anyone nationwide who criticizes pesticides, farming, or ultra-processed foods.

This law gives agribusiness and pesticide manufacturers the right to sue anyone who criticizes Florida’s farming practices or products, claiming “disparagement,” the social media influencer adds.

I looked up the bill text — SB 290 — Section 48, and here’s what it says, “865.065 Disparagement of perishable agricultural food products; cause of action; limitation. — (1) The Legislature finds, determines, and declares that the production of agricultural food products constitutes an important and significant portion of the state economy and that it is imperative to protect the vitality of the agricultural economy for the citizens of this state by providing a cause of action for agricultural producers to recover damages for the disparagement of any perishable agricultural product. (2) For purposes of this section, the term: 1868 (b)(a) ‘Disparagement,’ means the willful or malicious dissemination to the public in any manner of any false information that a perishable agricultural food product is not safe for human consumption. False information is that information which is not based on reliable, scientific facts and reliable, scientific data which the disseminator knows or should have known to be false.

But who is to say what is reliable, and what if it isn’t the veggie but the hidden chemical toxins that make it unsafe? The bill would open up broad boulevards for the chemical and food industry to attack anyone who disparages a cucumber or an apple. We’ve seen this before, of course, with the Alar alerts of 1989.

This bill has only been postponed. We must keep up the opposition and make our voices continue to be heard; if passed, this bill establishes a dangerous free speech precedent that can extend to other issues, especially as industry intends to bring a pesticide shield bill to the Florida legislature, Glyphosate Girl says. If this bill passes, how can the public speak up without fear of being sued? Instead, this bill would silence pesticide critics just when our voices need to be loudest to stop federal and national pesticide liability shield legislation. What’s more, it expands “food libel” laws beyond perishable foods to processed foods, grains, and farming practices. What’s more, it allows corporations to recover legal fees even when they sue and lose, notes Glyphosate Girl. “We would not be able to recover legal fees even if we win, and the lawsuits would be too costly to take on. Critics will be shut up or bankrupted.”

No matter whether you live in Florida or elsewhere, please take a moment to contact the following members of the state Senate Rules Committee. Tell them to protect free speech and STRIKE SECTION 48 from SB 290.

Here is a sample script that Glyphosate Girl has written to be used by all of us:

Hello, my name is (fill in your name), and I’m calling to urge the Senator to oppose SB 290 unless Section 48 is removed. This provision creates a dangerous “gag law” that allows powerful companies to sue and silence critics for speaking truthfully about food, farming, and public health. It sets a chilling precedent that undermines free speech, scientific debate, and consumer transparency. No corporation should be able to bankrupt doctors, journalists, or citizens for raising legitimate concerns. Please protect free speech and either strike Section 48 or vote NO on SB 290.

There are many ways we can improve our health and our children’s health, regardless of our budget. I saw firsthand with my friends in Louisiana who live in this heavily industrialized area.

Every weekend, there are new funerals for people dying from cancer. These are small communities, and the cancer rate is astronomical.

For example, one topic in my new book is how to reduce plastic use in our lives and processes. I’m trying to sensitize people to how much plastic is actually accumulating in their tissues: their brain tissues, reproductive organs, and their children’s tissues. These plastic particles act like the hormone estrogen in boys and girls, and they interfere with our kids’ sexual and brain development; the brain and the sexual organs are heavily dependent on the sex hormones for proper growth.

These processes are disrupted because your body is accumulating plastic particles that inhibit testosterone production or over-estrogenize the body, affecting your kids’ development.

And, you know, you might be wondering, for example, why so many more kids in Generation X, Gen Z, and Millennials are proclaiming that they are gender fluid compared to past generations? One reason is that the chemicals I discuss in Raising Healthy Kids: Protecting Your Children from Hidden Chemical Toxins have this effect because they interfere with sex hormones. It’s happening to everyone.

A researcher back in the 1990s noted that the levels of testosterone in men today are about half of what they were in our grandfathers’ day before World War II. We are really over-estrogenizing ourselves and our future generations. And if you wonder about how our nation will survive, you have to look at what I’m saying seriously because running a democracy requires intelligence.

The American Revolution began in the 1760s and lasted more than a decade as the American colonies fought the British. The most literate and educated people were the ones who wanted to break from the king. Many Americans didn’t. They wanted to be loyal and faithful to the king, and studies on the impact of chemical toxins on IQ show that exposure reduces IQ. For example, studies in California and New York found that organophosphate pesticides could reduce children’s IQ by five to seven points. Now you may say, “Well, I’m wealthy,” or “I’m rich,” or “My kids go to a great school,” but we’re all being exposed. And we’re all losing IQ, whether it’s across the society or in our individual kids, and I’m concerned about this because I’m a dad. I have three kids whom I love to death and will do anything for.

In Raising Healthy Kids, I provide ways to reduce your exposure to chemical toxins, including plastic, which has a real impact. As I have noted before, a Taiwanese company plans to build the world’s largest plastics plant in St. James Parish, Louisiana, in Cancer Alley, to produce more artificial turf, single-use straws, and other nonessential plastic products. Now, we go through over 180 million straws a day alone in America, and all of this plastic, as I said, either accumulates in our environment or in our tissues, but it’s not going away.

You can make a difference by improving the health of my friends and our family members in Cancer Alley, Louisiana, by making conscientious shopping choices. For example, when I go out to eat now, I always bring reusable stainless steel straws, and people don’t look at me like I’m unusual anymore. They kind of go, “Well, where’d you get those. That’s kind of cool. That way, we don’t have to waste so much plastic ourselves on single-use.” One of the key points I emphasize is the benefits to your health and to our nation. Similarly, I usually have a stainless steel coffee mug with me, so when I get that last cup of coffee for the road, I don’t take it in a Styrofoam cup; I get it in my own reusable cup, which saves plastic waste. It also saves exposure for me. Also, in Raising Healthy Kids, I share a lot about how to shop for organic produce and where the bargains are, and I told you I went to Cancer Alley, which is widely considered a food desert. You’re not gonna find, for example, a bunch of organic food markets in Cancer Alley. But you will find a Walmart. I point this out in many of the podcasts I do and when I talk to folks: there’s a Walmart everywhere, and Walmart is selling a lot of organic produce. I wish they sold more, but they’ve stepped it up, so you can reduce your exposure to chemical pesticides that affect your brain. For example, as you get older, these pesticides don’t stop hurting you. Instead of losing cognitive ability when you’re seven years old and a child, now you will lose it as you get older, in your sixties and seventies, or later. Yet older people value the years they have left and want them to be healthy. They want a healthy lifespan, not one spent with dementia, Alzheimer’s, or cancer. So when you go down to Cancer Alley, there’s even a Walmart there, and you can find organic foods.

Reducing plastic use is a big step toward improving your health, and I show you how in my new book, Raising Healthy Kids: Protecting Your Children from Hidden Chemical Toxins. Also, pesticides and plastic can both have estrogenic effects. They both come from petrochemicals, and they both harm our kids, not just through their estrogenic effects,s but they can also be carcinogenic and neurotoxic, that is, toxic to the brain.

Now they were also being used in hand towels, particularly during the pandemic, when you bought those little hand towels. During the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, these often contained quaternary compounds as active ingredients. Back in 2014, researchers at Virginia Tech published a critical study from their biomedical sciences laboratory. They switched chemicals to keep the rodent cages free of bacteria, switching from what they were using to quaternary compounds, and the rodents became infertile. There were stillbirths. There were no births. There were abnormal sperm counts. All of this happened because the rodents were exposed to quaternary compounds. Now you understand that in America, no pre-market safety testing is required for ingredients, so no government regulation says quaternary compounds need to be tested before they’re used in cosmetic,s although, as I mentioned, one of the DevaCurl legal actions involved quaternary compounds, and I was on the documentary Not So Pretty, talking about these quaternary compounds in the DevaCurl situation.

So there are other theories on the DevaCurl situation, but quat compounds are certainly one of the important ones to consider. That case was eventually settled, and the claimants, the plaintiffs, won against the company. Now, what people are finding is that in the hair care business, particularly during the pandemic, there’s minimal in-shop action. So a lot of hairdressers who are women who couldn’t get pregnant were suddenly at home and out of work. And among the hairdressers of New York City, there was a baby boom because suddenly they weren’t being exposed to chemical compounds like the quats. Other studies since 2014 have shown that the quaternary compounds affect reproductive health and fertility. So, if you want to get pregnant, if you’re going to have a family, and many people in America do, and can’t, you have to look at the ingredients of the products around you because they can be causing havoc to your chances of having a family.

And these Arm & Hammer Essentials, which you can get anywhere, don’t tell that story. But the story I’m telling you is real.

The quat link to reproductive health

Sometimes, one little product, one little innocuous product, can tell an enormous story about where our society is today, and that’s what I found when I was doing some shopping and looked at a product called Arm & Hammer Essentials Laundry Sheets. These cost $6. You can get it at Amazon or any store, and I noticed something fundamental about the ingredients. This is something that you won’t hear anywhere else. The first ingredient in these laundry sheets and similar products is quaternary ammonium compounds. Now, this is an ingredient you’ve probably never heard of. Still, it’s been involved in legal actions over products like DevaCurl, and it’s also frequently found in hair straightening products for the ethnic hair care market. The quaternary compounds prevent sticking, so when you have two different surfaces, they don’t cling to each other, and that’s why they’re used in laundry too, as dryer sheets. Now, quaternary compounds are also used in antibacterial sprays like Lysol. It’s one of the main ingredients, and that’s because quaternary compounds are biocides. They’re effectively little pesticides.

This is the worst timing and the worst kind of negotiation; they sold us out for a handful of promises. It’s so disappointing — from John Fetterman to Jeanne Shaheen to Tim Kaine and the rest —the big lesson here is that we need to elect better leaders. People who will fight for us when it comes to our health, fight for us when it comes to banning certain chemicals like Roundup and chlorpyrifos (which may come back on the market), and do not approve of forever chemicals as pesticides. People who are interested in our health. These people are irredeemable, so let’s get rid of them. That’s the big lesson of tonight. You use them once or twice, then throw them out. The safety razor is what you want to buy. It works really well. It’s very eco-friendly now when it comes to shaving cream—you know, a lot of men and women use aerosol shaving creams. Still, I want to tell you something that contains triethanolamine, which forms cancer-causing nitrosamines. They also contain aerosol propellants that are often contaminated with benzene. Your best bet is to get a brand like Alba emollient shaving cream or Kiss My Face. These are much purer. They’re very reasonably priced. This is a way to make your shopping dollars count because these products use very few petrochemicals. In contrast, the aerosol shaving creams use a ton of petrochemicals.

Triethanolamine. Butane. These are just some examples—the ethoxylated surfactants. You know, it’s nasty stuff. So don’t use the aerosol. Get the emollients. As I mentioned, two brands I like are Alba and Kiss My Face. And if you do it like I do, maybe your friend will want to kiss your face too.

These residues can cause your daughter to enter menarche earlier than she would otherwise. Once she enters menarche, the estrogen window opens, and her risk for breast cancer and other reproductive cancers will also increase. So that’s one reason why you should get grass-fed beef. Suppose you’re pregnant and eating conventionally sourced beef. In that case, your child’s risk for congenital birth defects, including hypospadias, which is a misplaced penile opening in boys, will also increase. Grass-fed beef avoids the use of hormone implants, plus because it’s grass-fed, there are fewer pesticides, and it’s a safer choice at the same price.

I know they don’t mean to do this, either. They just swallowed the simplest message, which is not the right one. Corporate media frames these issues in terms of black and white, and it isn't that simple. Well, Meidas Touch and Edwards are doing what the corporates do now, and it is hurting our cause of democracy because they lose credibility since they tread in areas with which they have little familiarity. The doctors they are citing or interviewing are falling into this trap, too. PS, I am not anti-vaccine, just for the facts.

As I share, many studies associate Tylenol (acetaminophen) with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism. Some studies do not support an association. But most do. All are peer-reviewed works.

In this case, the sensible recommendation is to take precautions. Acetaminophen isn’t completely safe, and the fact that we haven’t worked out all of the toxicology isn’t a reason to discount the many excellent studies that show this association.

Meidas Touch is a fine outlet. I listen to them. Same for Edwards (who is always cold). I like these folks and respect their views.

However, I know more about this topic than they do, and they are not providing any assistance to the pro-democracy forces when they frame issues wrongly.

On the other hand, the reason we know all of this now is because of public funding, which the Trump administration has drastically reduced.

So you might be interested in how Donald Trump’s environmental regulations are impacting people in real life in real time. So I’m going to tell you a little bit about what’s going on with my friends in Cancer Alley, Louisiana.

This is the area from New Orleans up to Baton Rouge, about 85 miles of the Mississippi River, with some two hundred industrial chemical plants. Now that Trump has loosened regulations, the amount of chemical emissions that my friends are breathing is increasing.

And these are chemicals like benzene, toluene, ammonia, nitrate, cadmium, chromium, and lead. It’s really, really obscene. We just lost Melvin Whittington

. He was a star football player at Southeastern Louisiana. And he died from benzene exposure.

He worked at one of the plants. Other people are dying who live near the plants. It’s really terrible.

At the same time that people would like to know how they’re being poisoned because there were supposed to be fence line chemical monitoring stations put in under biden trump has removed all of that so not only are the people getting poisoned but now they can’t even monitor what chemicals are being released or how much okay so these things are really impacting communities on a on a on a very real level they’ve rolled back regulations They’ve taken away funding to monitor the types of air pollutants coming out of the plants.

All of these products are reasonably priced. Some are more expensive than their conventional synthetic competitors. Others, like the sponges, olive oil, and cocoa, are less expensive. One reason prices for these so-called alternative products are becoming competitive is that they are moving into the mainstream. You can help. And help yourself and your family at the same time.

You won’t know how much better you and your loved ones can feel until you open the door of shopping consciously and make that effort to enter a new life of less nanoplastic and fewer pesticides.

We need to take much more radical personal action and demand more of our Republican Party. MAGA is so stupid it cannoy possibly be environmental; this is a complicated area, and nepo baby is so low IQ; if you look at all the societal discord going on right now, this was predictable from a neurobiological viewpoint; in fact, back in the 1990s I was at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC, representing the public interest on the safe seafood committee, and we were studying the effects of chemicals like organochlorines and heavy metals on the developing fetus; this is very important: around 1995 after I left, one of the people who came onto my committee and actually used my research was the late wildlife biologist Theo Colburn. (I have thoughts on the Democrats, too…)

She was a pioneer in educating us about endocrine disruption. She co-authored a book, along with several co-authors, called Our Stolen Future, a classic environmental work that you should read. But she talked about how animals in her realm of wildlife biology were suffering deformities, behavioral change, fertility issues, herding issues…

It’s taking away anywhere from 5 to 7 IQ points across the whole curve, up and down, for all children. Everyone is losing on this. So we’re dumbing down society, and some studies show this. Some studies suggest society is being dumbed down. People with lower education and lower IQs tend to be more authoritarian. They tend to be intolerant of other lifestyles.

What motivates me now is all my friends in Cancer Alley, whom I play music with, work with, and care about profoundly. We’ve become a real family. I really like that. But our shopping decisions on a day-to-day basis are killing them. I mean, I get so offended these days when I see a talk show host with a plastic bottle of water or an environmentalist holding bottled water that’s made from plastic. I don’t care if it’s recycled.

We’re overusing plastic. And all that plastic begins a cancer alley. So we’re a very young movement. We didn’t even have the language or the words to express what was going on in nature, because in the 1980s no one had heard of, except for a very few prescient scientists, terms like endocrine disruption, endocrine disrupting chemicals, reproductive toxin, carcinogen, or part per billion, much less part per trllion which we’re dealing with now with forever chemicals and some organochlorines like dioxin. I mean, in the 1980s, we were talking parts per million. So it was a time of waking up.

I met a woman who was breastfeeding her baby. She had some of the highest levels of DDT in her blood, which meant it was in her breast milk. She asked the doctor, who visited her at her home, whether she should continue to breastfeed her baby. And that was a tough answer for him to make, and he said that was a really high level of DDT.

Maybe she didn’t want to do that; it was really a problematic situation. She asked him Was my baby going to be all right She wanted him to say so right then and there. He didn’t know, and she looked all right, she looked okay, everything will be OK, but she was poisoned, really high levels, probably some of the highest in the study. So these folks were all among the poison that we met.

I wanted to share today how I came to write Raising Healthy Kids: Protecting Your Children from Hidden Chemical Toxins. It’s not my first, and I thought it would be helpful for you to know a little bit about me. So you know that the person who’s giving you this advice is someone you can rely on and is a straight shooter and is going to tell you the facts and give you the interpretations that are best for your health.

I grew up in Los Angeles, California, and I fished most of my life. From the time I was four or five years old, I would go down to Ballona Creek and catch perch and flounder and cook them up there or take them home and eat them.

Later, I began fishing on sport fishing boats that operated out of all the ports and harbors along the Southern California coast from Santa Barbara all the way down to San Diego. I also worked on a commercial purse seiner. And I can’t tell you the name, but I can tell you something. They were from Half Moon Bay. I can’t give you the captain’s name. I really can’t. But they were down in Los Angeles, fishing mackerel and tuna for the fish market in the cannery. And their real money came from drug smuggling. I wasn’t part of that crew. I was one of the people they picked up and left behind when they went down to Mexico or Colombia. So when I see Trump shooting down this little Boston whaler or whatever it was, this small boat, from sixteen to thirty feet at most, you know he’s just killing fishermen. He’s just killing people. If you really think there are drugs on there, there weren’t. I know that’s an aside, but I mean, they have offered no proof because you can’t carry it, you know. When I worked on this boat, it was 60 feet long. It had an enormous hold for our catch. You can imagine how many bales of marijuana or whatever they were going to bring up, cocaine, it can hold. It was worthwhile. This little Boston whaler was not carrying drugs. I can tell you that it wasn’t coming to California. You can’t in such a small boat, not practically.

But anyway, I grew up fishing and eating fish. And around 1985, dolphins began showing up on the shores of some of the beaches in Southern California, and they were dying or dead. And their blubber was just really high in chemicals called DDT. That’s a pesticide. And PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), which are a family of industrial chemicals. They were really high. And scientists and biologists were working at the Southern California Water Research Project in Long Beach. And I got together with them as a reporter for the LA Weekly, and we started talking about what was going on.

I had read Rachel Carson, and I am a child of Rachel Carson. I’m really proud of that. She’s my mama. She invented it all. She gave us the language. This is a very young movement, anti-toxic; she gave us the language, and she gave me inspiration about how to express things. We’ve, you know, invented even more words and concepts since she first wrote her book, Silent Spring, but she’s the mother of modern environmentalism, so I had read her. I was talking to the folks at the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, and I went back to my editor. We started talking about what to do, how to cover this story. We already knew that there were a lot of pesticides and PCBs in the dolphins, and that was probably harming their immune systems and making them susceptible to parasites and other diseases. We also knew from previous research that DDT was thinning the eggshells of birds of prey along the Southern California coast. That would be like falcons and eagles. They were unable to breed or found it very difficult to do so. And we also found that during this period, you would see females clustering with females because they were exhibiting changes in gender behavior. However, not everyone was attuned to that at that time.

But this is the background, and this was like there was no labeling, nothing going on in terms of informing people. If you think it’s dark now, and it really is dark now, it was so dark then. It was so dark, man, I was holding a candle out. Anyway, I was working with the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project and my editors at the LA Weekly. And my editor and I decided, you know, how to make this relevant to people. So let’s find people who are eating fish from the bay, the same fish that the dolphins are eating, and see if they have high levels of DDT and PCBs. That was an impossible assignment, totally impossible to do. But that’s why I’m here, he tells me.

Sometimes you can do the impossible, he adds.

We did it. I worked with a friend of mine, a physician who was completing his residency at Glendale Adventist Medical Center. I worked with the great late John Ljubenkov, a great marine biologist associated with the University of Southern California, Dr. Harold Puffer, who was a toxicologist at USC and had done some earlier work in this area, and was vitally interested in our project. He had done a seafood consumption survey that we could use to determine how much seafood locally caught people were eating versus how much seafood they’re eating that wasn’t locally caught.

The fish in the Santa Monica Bay were really highly contaminated. Let me give you a little bit of the backstory. There is a company called Montrose that, at the time, was manufacturing DDT for export. It had been banned in the US since 1972, but it was still being manufactured in South Central LA for export because it wasn’t banned in other countries. But what the company was doing with permission from our public officials — and this really hurts and makes me angry — they were barging out the DDT waste sludge into the Santa Monica Bay in barrels. And then they were reported to hack them open so that they would sink to the bottom and not pose a navigation hazard. Now, whether they were hacked open isn’t really the issue because the issue is that the barrels eventually deteriorated anyway. And all this DDT, two thousand tons of DDT, was released into the bay and contaminated everyone, all the fish, all the dolphins, and, as my study later showed, all of the people, including myself.

That’s how I discovered my own DDT poisoning, so I’m one of the OG when it comes to DDT poisoning. I had been eating fish contaminated, apparently, with DDT since probably the 1960s. When I was an innocent child, no one told me that the fish on my father’s boat, all sorts of fish, the opaleye, the calico bass, the barracuda, and the white sea bass, were contaminated with high loads of DDT.

And a lot of people didn’t find out. And what I learned from the study was that people were getting hurt. Because in that study, for example, one person I met was dying of liver cancer. I met him at the Venice Pier. His bucket was filled with white croakers. And he said he was there with his wife. And he said, “Well, this is what we live on. You know, we’re not rich. We come here and fish and catch these fish and eat them.”

“Oh, what do you do?”

“I used to work for the postal service, but I don’t anymore because I have liver cancer.”

I looked at the white croakers, and I looked at him. The connection was as evident as could be.

In another case, I visited a sport fishing boat working out of Redondo Beach, where the skipper had hypertension, and their levels of DDT and PCBs were off the charts. And that’s a real symptom of DDT poisoning.

I met a woman who was breastfeeding her baby. She had some of the highest levels of DDT in her blood, which meant it was in her breast milk. She asked the doctor — who visited her at her home — whether she should continue to breastfeed her baby. And that was a tough decision for him to make. And he said that was a really high level of DDT, and maybe she didn’t want to do that. It was really a difficult situation. She asked him whether her baby was going to be all right. She wanted him to say so right then and there, and he couldn’t. He didn’t know. And she looks all right. She looks okay. Everything will be okay. But not really…

But she was poisoned with really high levels, some of the highest in the study. So these folks were all among the poisoned whom we met. And that’s how I know that what we eat impacts our health. Since then, the studies have been done, the epidemiological studies, that validate everything I’m telling you: that when people eat seafood high in carcinogens, they’re at greater risk for cancer.

My work was later verified at the National Academy of Sciences, where, from 1989 to 1991, I represented the public interest on a committee that was studying safe seafood and advising Congress. I came to write about gender identity after discovering the chemically contaminated alligators of Lake Apopka, Florida.

Back in the 1980s, a plant manufacturing pesticides experienced a significant spill of DDT, polluting the water and affecting the gators. You may not be aware, but DDT is recognized as an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) due to its significant estrogenic properties and interference with the body’s production of sex hormones. When wildlife biologists examined the Lake Apopka gators after recording their extremely low live birth rates, they noticed their sex hormones had become blurred and were no longer distinctly male or female. Whereas gators in other nearby locations, where there was no spill, appeared relatively healthy with high hatch rates compared to the very low ones at Lake Apopka.

However, there are many chemicals, such as DDT. Many of the forever chemicals in our drinking water are also EDCs. Many pesticides found in our foods exhibit this effect, as do phthalates in kids’ personal care products and women’s cosmetics. Their hitherto hidden influence on our children has been extensive and unrecognized by most of our lawmakers and certainly by virtually the entire MAGA crowd that is intent on turning trans-identifying persons into the new N words of our society.

They’re the ignorant ones. They don’t understand that the way our children are today is our creation, or how the human fetus develops, and how much normal maturation and gender identity depend on the sex hormones.

There are distinct bursts of sex hormones during pregnancy. Early on, the genitalia develop under a burst of sex hormones. But what we know is that when EDCs mix with the natural sex hormones, this interferes with sexual maturation. This can occur through the ingestion of contaminated water, a diet high in foods containing EDCs, or the use of cosmetics with high phthalate concentrations. For example, the anogenital distance in males is shortened, becoming similar to that of females. Penis can be reduced. Sperm counts are lower in less healthy populations—risk for infertility and testicular cancer increases. Gender behavior becomes feminized.

But there is another organ in the human body that is also entirely dependent on the sex hormones for normal development. That is the human brain. Under this second burst, much later, the human brain develops into distinctly male or female. But what we have not known until relatively recently, based on autopsies conducted in the Netherlands, is that the human brain also develops in specific ways in trans persons. Male-to-female transgender persons were found to have feminine appearing brain structures, even among those who had never used hormones. It is as if they were born this way, which is probably the truth.

But this isn’t only happening to transgender-identifying persons. All of us have been impacted, which is why we now see gender identity in shades and gradations rather than as distinct male and female polarities. Not everyone. Not everywhere. But things are changing.

Our children are developing within this context of chemical contamination. Like the alligators of Lake Apopka, they are living in a sea of estrogen.

So we create the chemicals that lead to gender chaos. Our children are increasingly experiencing this chaos. Then we punish them? For what we played a hand in creating?

As I share in my new book Raising Healthy Kids: Protecting Your Children from Hidden Chemical Toxins, exposure to a class of synthetic chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — often called “forever chemicals” — is one of the most harmful environmental threats today.

We’ve known for some time that PFAS — a group of chemicals that resist heat, oil, water, and stains and are used in everything from nonstick cookware to stain-resistant furniture to waterproof clothing — interfere with male sexual maturity, damage sperm, cause testicular cancer, and even lead to structural abnormalities such as smaller penises and anogenital distance or AGD. Boys tend to have a much greater AGD than girls, but this is decreased when they are exposed during pregnancy. Females are at higher risk for infertility and reproductive cancer as well.

Now we know that those persons with the highest exposures are also at increasingly greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes, according to a new study led by Mount Sinai researchers. The findings were published in eBioMedicine.

Researchers analyzed blood samples to investigate PFAS levels and found higher levels associated with a significantly increased risk of developing T2D. Each increase in a range of PFAS exposures was linked to a 31 percent increase in risk.

Because they don’t break down easily, PFAS accumulate in the environment — and in human bodies.

At the time, I was studying baby products for the presence of a harmful chemical carcinogen called 1,4-dioxane. And this chemical appears frequently in products that contain detergents, such as sodium lauryl sulfate. We ultimately discovered high amounts in many products and publicized our findings. Some of the products with the highest amounts of all were Herbal Essences and Pantene shampoos. And we ended up suing them and going to court in California.

We won that case, and the consent decree ordered them to reduce their presence of that chemical significantly. And today, when consumers buy herbal essences and Pantene shampoos, the amount of that carcinogen has been reduced by 90%. But 90% isn’t good enough. You deserve 100%.
