About Archdeacon Denise Schiavone:

The Venerable Denise Schiavone took her ordination vows on June 13, 2020—at the height of pandemic shut-downs—in her home parish of St. John’s, Ellicott City.  She currently serves as Archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland and as the deacon at St. Peter’s Church, Ellicott City.  In her secular vocation, Archdeacon Denise works as a Communications Strategist, Writer, and Editor for a large not-for-profit company that serves the public interest. She also served 20 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring from active duty in 2006.  She holds a master’s degree in writing from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree in government and politics from University of Maryland College Park. Archdeacon Denise lives in Ellicott City with her husband Matt and in her off time enjoys yoga, hiking, traveling, and spending time with friends.

He currently serves as Executive Director of the Sutton Scholars High School Enrichment Program, an initiative of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland aimed at supporting Baltimore City High School students in their efforts to develop the confidence, competence and character they need to achieve success in high school, post-secondary educational environments and their chosen careers. James formerly served as the founding Executive Director of the Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys in Washington, DC.

In addition to his work at Sutton Scholars, James serves on the governing board of the Washington National Cathedral, and is an independent director of IDW Media Holdings, a publisher of graphic novels and comic books including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sonic the Hedgehog, and John Lewis’ March.

About Bishop Carrie: The Rt. Rev. Carrie K. Schofield-Broadbent was elected on March 25, 2023, as bishop coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland. She was ordained and consecrated on September 16, 2023, at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, with Bishop Mary Gray-Reeves as the Chief Consecrator.

Bishop Carrie came from the Diocese of Central New York. She worked as the youth minister at St James’, Skaneateles, as a conflict resolution trainer and consultant in educational settings until she entered Virginia Theological Seminary. After graduating in 2003, Bishop Carrie served in three small parishes, St. Paul’s, Syracuse, and then as the rector of St. Matthew’s, Liverpool for ten years. In 2017 she became a canon on diocesan staff serving in transition ministry and congregational development. She has served as a as a conflict resolution consultant for churches and a trainer in the College for Congregational Development.

Deeply committed to honoring the dignity of every human being, Bishop Carrie consistently attends to her own work around race, climate change, economic justice, and full inclusion of LGBTQAI+ persons and is committed to helping the Church grow in these areas. She identifies her own core values of ministry as: trust and relationships, truth and transparency, and compassion and faithfulness.

Bishop Carrie and her husband, Keith have two young adult children, Will and Kate. They have two dogs and enjoy traveling, camping, kayaking, and hiking together. Her hobbies include making pottery in a community studio, reading, growing houseplants, antique/thrifting and practicing yoga.

Dr. Brandt Montgomery is the Chaplain of Saint James School in Hagerstown, Maryland, having previously served at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Lafayette, Louisiana as Chaplain of Ascension Episcopal School from 2014-2017, then as Associate Rector and All-School Chaplain from 2017-2019. Dr. Dorothy Adamson Holley, aka Drum Dr. Dot, is a Developmental Psychologist and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who integrates psychology and spirituality in clinical practice. She is the Founder and psychotherapist of Breathe Holistic Counseling, and she specializes in working with clients who have not responded well to traditional treatment. Dr. Holley is the creator of Drumetry™, an art form that integrates African drumming and poetry. She is an author, recording artist, songwriter, vocalist, percussionist, dancer, harmonicist, and Healer Through Music. Dr. Holley is a proud member of the Baltimore-based band, Roses n Rust.

Making a Difference for Syrian Refugees in Southeastern Turkey

Kenya Connect: Support for Education in Rural Kenya

We are honored to have Sharon Runge as our guest in this episode. Dr. Sharon Runge is Executive of Kenya Connect (USA) a non-profit working in rural Kenya with the mission of enriching and engaging students and teachers with 21st century skills through a robust array of programs at 63 partner government schools. In this position, Sharon works with the Kenyan led staff to develop partnerships, raise funds, develop and expand programs and lead volunteer trips.
Sharon holds a Ph.D. from NYU and a MA from Boston College in Higher Education Administration and a BS from the University of New Hampshire in Child/Family studies.

In this episode, we meet Sharon Runge, Executive Director of Kenya Connect (USA) as she introduces us to the amazing work her organization is doing in Kenya. While focused on improving the educational experience for impoverished students, Kenya Connect takes a broad, holistic view of the various support systems needed to improve and maintain learning. Spiritual Direction with Peter Watkins

We are honored to have Peter Watkins as our guest for this episode. Peter Watkins, M.Div. is a spiritual director, retreat leader, and faculty member at Sacred Ground Center for Spirituality, a school for the formation of aspiring spiritual directors. He has taught graduate level classes in Old Testament theology and adolescent psychology and spirituality, and has co-authored a high school textbook, Guarding the Fire: A Spiritual Guide for Young Men through Good Ground Press. He is also certified to give the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises. As a former high school philosophy and theology teacher of thirty years he especially loved leading student justice trips to Guatemala and pilgrimages on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Peter is a life-long runner, father of three sons, and loves playing the guitar and banjo.

We are pleased to welcome our guest Daniel Jacoby, who is Assistant Director of the Episcopal Refugee and Immigrant Center Alliance (ERICA), affiliated with the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Baltimore, MD. Daniel discusses his early experience with helping Afghan refugees gain admission to several Baltimore-area colleges to complete their education after fleeing Afghanistan’s Taliban regime.

Before becoming the Assistant Director of ERICA, Daniel had a career in teaching high school history. He worked in schools in Czechoslovakia, Finland and Israel -- and, for the previous 20 years, in Baltimore.
