Hosted by Dr. Dominick Shattuck, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University and Men’s Health Fellow at the American Institute for Boys and Men, the podcast brings a relational lens to conversations about identity, well-being, and human connection.

Each episode follows a simple but powerful structure: guests reflect on the people who shaped them, the institutions and communities that influenced their paths, and the ways they engage with the broader world. Through these discussions, the podcast surfaces how relationships (e.g., family, partners, friends, workplaces) function as dynamic systems that evolve over time and profoundly impact health and well-being.

Rather than offering prescriptive advice, Relational Ground creates space for reflection, storytelling, and insight. It highlights themes such as masculinity, connection, isolation, growth, and the often-unspoken dynamics that influence how we relate to others and ourselves.

At its core, the podcast asks a simple but urgent question: how do we build more meaningful, connected lives in an increasingly fragmented world?

dominickmenshealth.substack.com

Rebuilding Connection in an Age of Disconnection.

Dominick Shattuck, PhD

en

dominickmenshealth@substack.com
<itunes:new-feed-url>https://api.substack.com/feed/podcast/4664388.rss</itunes:new-feed-url><itunes:author>Rebuilding Connection in an Age of Disconnection.</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Where Men, Health and Community Meet</itunes:subtitle><itunes:type>episodic</itunes:type><itunes:owner><itunes:name>Rebuilding Connection in an Age of Disconnection.</itunes:name><itunes:email>dominickmenshealth@substack.com</itunes:email></itunes:owner><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit><itunes:category text="Science"><itunes:category text="Social Sciences"/></itunes:category><itunes:category text="Society & Culture"/><itunes:image href="https://substackcdn.com/feed/podcast/4664388/3fd8eb7a5c7b1fb06ce5cd97f1536b24.jpg"/>

Relational Ground #2: Everything is Learning, with Kevin Shane

What does it mean to design a life rooted in curiosity, empathy, and authentic connection?

In this episode of Relational Ground, I sit down with Kevin Shane, co-founder of Noodle Research and former communications and design lead at the Male Contraceptive Initiative. Drawing on his background in systems thinking and his personal experiences, he frames relationships as dynamic systems that require ongoing investment rather than static roles.

A key insight is his distinction between being needed and being wanted—a shift that transformed his understanding of love, self-worth, and partnership. He describes how strong relationships create a feedback loop, generating energy that carries into other areas of life.

Yiannos also introduces the idea of the relationship as a “third child” that must be actively nurtured, warning that neglecting it can destabilize the entire family system.

He closes by highlighting two critical challenges for men: the movement from resilience to silence, and the rise of “functional isolation,” where friendships fade over time. His question—who do you call at 2 a.m.?—underscores the need to rebuild meaningful connections in our lives.

This is a public episode.
