If I don’t do that, bad things happen, or I say the wrong things. </p><p>  Thinking before we say or do anything, is that a bad thing? I’m not making any more here, and I don’t have many subscribers yet, but I’m happier than I was on Medium. It’s because there’s more interaction here and no judgment.</p><p>  The one thing that annoys me is the “Follow me, I’ll follow you” posts that pop up all the time. They come in cycles. I won’t see too many for several days, then I’ll see tons of them.</p><p>  The only way to succeed here is by building a genuinely invested audience. Superficial “ Follow, I’ll follow you” might give a temporary boost, but it’s not sustainable. </p><p> My suggestion is to create the best content you can and engage with other creators. I remember going to the beach in Japan and getting burned to a crisp. In the ‘80s, when my family lived in Fort Worth, Texas, I spent summers in the backyard in my swimsuit, working on my tan. Of course, living in Florida for twenty years in my 40s and 50s didn’t help matters.</p><p>  I had several basal cell tumors removed in the past, and I’m sure the sore I felt on my back this afternoon is another one. As the cramped room grew more crowded than what should have been allowed, I watched as guys walked up and down the center of the room yelling, “ Loose Squares. loose Squares.” Or, they would be yelling, “Rollies, Rollies.”</p><p>  “Loose Squares,” were manufactured cigarettes. “Rollies,” were hand-rolled. What they were doing was selling cigarettes, or looking to buy cigarettes. Talking is easy, but you have to do the work. What’s the point of talking about writing if you haven’t published online? A lot of people use “Follow for Follow” as a growth strategy. That tells me they aren’t interested in the craft of writing, they want vanity metrics and money.</p><p>  They won’t succeed. They would be better off learning and practicing the craft of writing. Write and post often. That’s the only way to grow in this business. He loved to regale people with stories about his family. He would tell stories and slant them to make his kids look bad. He also would say things to tear people down to lift himself. </p><p>  I don’t think he always realized he was doing this, but that didn’t make it easier. He would apologize sometimes if he was called out. Weirdly, I’m doing better than I was before. The obsession level has increased. I’m operating from a place of obsession because I want my subscriber count to be what it was before. </p><p>   I have learned what it takes to grow on YouTube and I’m getting it done. Substack will take longer, and I’m doing it right. What I’m not doing is the follow-for-follow crap. I wasn’t able to write newsletters this week. The past week's events showed me I can’t rely on one source of income. I’m working on a Fiverr profile to jump into freelancing. I proved on Medium and Substack I can write, so why not make money doing what I enjoy.</p><p>  It’s not going to be easy, but nothing worthwhile is. I had a setback, but my new YouTube channel is growing fast. Life is good despite challenges, I will never give up.</p><p>  Please consider being a paid subscriber.
