Jonathan Twining is an Assistant Professor Emeritus with
Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA, where he taught ecology and environmental science for 22 years. His area of interest includes the study of reptiles and amphibians and has research in amphibian bioacoustics where he has been published numerous times. He is currently an advisor to the Upendo Conservation Area in Bungoma County, Kenya; which is a small conservancy for the protection of reptiles, amphibians, and other small animals. He is also the Founder of the Snake Community Action Network in Kenya, which works to reduce venomous snakebites throughout Kenya and East Africa! Love this! In accordance with World Health Organization guidelines, their goal is to reduce snakebites by 50% by 2030.

In this episode we are joined by theologian and author Yvette R. Blair-Lavallais, as we discuss food insecurity, particularly around women in black and brown communities who suffer under the weight of systemic food injustice.

Reverend Doctor Yvette R. Blair-Lavallais is a womanist public theologian and food justice strategist. Her work focuses on the intersection of food insecurity, famines, displacement, and gentrification of Black, Latinx, and Indigenous peoples. Currently, she serves on the ministerial team at Greater Garth Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Dallas. She is an adjunct faculty member at Memphis Theological Seminary where she teaches Theologies of the Land in the doctoral program. She is the author of Scrimpin' and Scrapin': The Hardships and Hustle of Women and Food Insecurity in Texas Through a Womanist Lens.

Makayla wears a lot of hats in life! She is a pastor, professor, master naturalist, and amateur birder. She spends most of her year in Costa Rica as the Program Coordinator of the Quetzal Education and Research Center which is a study abroad program run by Southern Nazarene University where she co-teaches Biblical Theology and Global Stewardship with her husband Caleb. She spends her free time with a pair of binoculars and the Merlin app trying to identify local birds.

About Jason and the Trevecca Urban Farm: Jason teaches environmental justice classes in the Center for Social Justice at Trevecca Nazarene University. In 2011, Jason worked with students and faculty to start a farm on the university campus. Today, the Trevecca Urban Farm has helped start gardens all over town and hosts on campus a herd of goats, pigs, bees, chickens, worm composting, mushrooms, an herb and flower garden, a vegetable garden, and a large orchard. The Trevecca Urban Farm works with neighbors to build gardens and plant public orchards. This work is aimed at reconnecting people with their land and all its creatures. Jason and his students have shared conservation growing techniques with farmers in the Philippines, Swaziland, Senegal, and around the United States. He received his Permaculture Design Certificate in 2012 and has taught in four PDC courses since then. Presently, Jason is completing a master's degree in counseling and enjoys rock climbing with his children.
