Bryant after the loss of her husband, David. While processing her grief, she learned that talking with others helped her navigate the grief journey with grace and strength. She doesn't believe one can fully prepare for grief and loss, but she prays that as she shares her story listeners will find comfort and strength in the presence of God.

irispetersonbryant.substack.com

Iris Peterson Bryant

Iris Peterson Bryant

en

irispetersonbryant@substack.com
<itunes:new-feed-url>https://api.substack.com/feed/podcast/3374556.rss</itunes:new-feed-url><itunes:author>Iris Peterson Bryant</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Finding purpose on the other side OR smack dab in the middle of pain.</itunes:subtitle><itunes:type>episodic</itunes:type><itunes:owner><itunes:name>Iris Peterson Bryant</itunes:name><itunes:email>irispetersonbryant@substack.com</itunes:email></itunes:owner><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit><itunes:category text="Religion & Spirituality"/><itunes:image href="https://substackcdn.com/feed/podcast/3374556/538be71572fa4e61a7129a9bf0622e2f.jpg"/>

Layered Grief: When a New Loss Reopens Old Wounds

A Personal Note from Iris

Before you listen to today’s episode, I want to share a bit of context.

The conversation you’re about to hear was originally recorded on the first anniversary of my father’s passing, July 1, 2025. At the time, I wasn’t ready to release it. It was a deeply personal moment of sitting with memory, love, and trying to make sense of life without him.

I am choosing to share it with you now, two years after his passing, because it highlights a truth we focus on so deeply here at Grieving Well: grief does not move in straight lines . It doesn’t follow a tidy timeline. Sometimes it is quiet, sometimes it is loud and heavy, but it is always present.

As an adult adoptee, losing my father stirred up a sense of loss that I realized I had been navigating my entire life. It opened the door to older, layered grief that I didn’t fully realize I was still carrying.

Whether you are grieving a fresh loss, navigating the anniversary of a painful milestone, or realizing that a current heartache is pulling up old wounds, I pray this episode meets you with gentleness. Grieving well doesn’t mean you “get over it”—it just means you are honest about what you are carrying.

My daddy standing with me at my 1st Birthday Party.

Key Reflections from the Episode

* The Concept of Layered Grief: How a major life event can suddenly act as a catalyst, resurfacing older, unarticulated losses from our past.

* Building a Foundation of Security: Remembering the intentional ways my father made me feel safe, and how those memories provide stability even in his absence.

* God’s Opinion vs. People-Pleasing: A crucial lesson my dad taught me about grounding my identity in what God says about me, rather than seeking validation from the outside world.

* Grieving with Hope: Finding an anchor in Psalm 34:18—knowing that God is close to the brokenhearted, binding up our wounds without minimizing our pain.

My escort on the night I was named Homecoming Queen at Clinton High School

Journaling & Community Resources

* Download Grieving Well: A Reflection Journal for Grief, Faith, and Healing If this episode brings things to the surface for you, use this download space to quietly reflect or journal through your thoughts.

* Audio Clip Feature: Stay tuned until the end of the episode to hear a precious, archived 2021 clip of my father sharing his own memories and wisdom. As he beautifully put it: “You can’t beat that man upstairs.”

* Join the Journey: If this reflection brought comfort to your heart, consider sharing it with someone else who is quietly carrying a heavy loss today.

This is a public episode.
