The discussion opens with realism. Protestants and Catholics share trenches in the culture war. Radical Catholics, Presbyterians, Baptists, and even unexpected partners like atheists or Mormons unite against evils like abortion. Yet, as Gabe notes, co-belligerence has limits. Once victories are won, deeper differences emerge: Does the Pope hold jurisdiction over the state? Can a consistent Catholic integralist view America as properly under papal authority?

Historical and Theological Divide

The episode traces the fault lines to the Reformation. Pre-Trent medieval Christianity is claimed as shared heritage—Augustine, Anselm, and even Columbus (portrayed as a “solid Christian hero”) belong to Protestants too. But the Council of Trent’s anathemas against justification by faith alone marked a decisive split. Rome doubled down on tradition, sacramentalism, and papal supremacy, blending justification with sanctification in a lifelong process offering no firm assurance of salvation.

Protestantism, by contrast, recovered sola scriptura and sola fide. Scripture alone is ultimate and infallible; other authorities (church, family, state) are real but fallible. This covenantal framework—God’s direct authority over magistrates, not mediated through a pope—underpins resistance to tyranny. The Declaration of Independence reads like a “writ of divorce” filed against a king who broke covenant, echoing Reformation resistance theory from Rutherford and others.

Free Grace, Free Men, Free Societies

Joshua Mitchell, interviewed for the documentary, argues America’s DNA is Calvinistically Protestant and covenantal, rooted in a Hebraic sense of covenant that fosters risk-taking and resilience. Justification by faith alone removes the “stain” of sin decisively: “There is therefore now no condemnation.” This produces confident and bold people who can endure chaos, cross oceans, and reach the moon. Pilgrims on leaky ships trusted providence, not top-down prudence. Mitchell contrasts this with Aristotelian/Roman Catholic balance and hierarchy, which historically struggles with rapid discovery and growth. Europe’s slower pace reflects residual Roman Catholic caution; America’s dynamism reflects Protestant fearlessness.

Douglas Wilson powerfully summarizes: “Free grace produces free men, which produces free societies.” Without assurance of salvation, societies remain shackled. Roman Catholicism’s sacramentalism requires perpetual re-upping of grace, penance, and a vague hopefulness—never the decisive, “It is finished.” At a recent TPUSA event in Moscow, Idaho, Matt Walsh and Michael Knowles reportedly expressed only hope, not knowledge, of salvation. Protestant confidence, by contrast, fueled explorers, founders, and reformers.

The episode acknowledges Protestant failures—Arminianism, cultural drift, and identity politics as a “heresy of Protestantism,” twisting original sin horizontally into scapegoating. Yet Scripture provides a self-correcting mechanism: a man with an open Bible can challenge tyranny in any sphere. Rome’s development doctrine (Newman’s acorn-to-tree model, recently elevated) offers no such anchor and risks further evolution toward modernism, as seen in tolerance for progressive voices alongside crackdowns on traditionalists.

Practical Implications for Renewal

The CrossPolitic hosts reject nostalgia for a “Christian prince” morphing into papal integralism. Repentance means returning to Protestant roots in the local church, family, and faithful magistrates—not outsourcing to Rome.

America remains functionally post-Christian, with evangelicals often failing to live biblically. Yet the solution isn’t structural conversion to Catholicism but recovery of justification, covenant, and providence. A heavily Catholic nation could enjoy Christian blessings, but Scripture—not evolving tradition—must rule.

As the documentary trailer dramatizes—an emperor waiting barefoot in the snow before papal power versus pilgrims risking all—the choice is clear: top-down integration versus bottom-up covenantal freedom. Protestantism built the freest, most dynamic nation by proclaiming a gospel that truly frees.

On this week’s episode of CrossPolitic, Gabe sat down with Mark Fitzpatrick — entrepreneur, former law enforcement officer, husband of 23 years, father of six, and the man currently driving 8,000 miles across Idaho trying to unseat two-term Governor Brad Little in the May 19th Republican primary.

This conversation is worth every minute of your time.

Mark’s backstory alone is worth the listen. He grew up in Los Angeles County, son of a police officer, eventually became one himself for 15 years — while simultaneously building businesses on the side because, as he puts it, God wired him to be entrepreneurial. The government wasn’t exactly receptive to his ideas. Surprise, surprise.

He left California around 2016-17 — fed up with vaccine mandates for schoolchildren, suffocating regulations, and a business environment that was collapsing under its own bureaucratic weight. He came to Idaho to help plant a church, got into real estate, and eventually built what became the Old State Saloon in the Boise area. If you’ve been there, you know the place. If you haven’t, you’re missing out.

But here’s where it gets interesting.

Mark started hosting Tuesday night political speaker events at the saloon. Doctors talking about vaccines. Researchers digging into the Epstein files. Real conversations that the mainstream media wasn’t having. That’s where the CrossPolitic connection started — and that’s where you start to understand what kind of man Mark Fitzpatrick is.

He’s not a politician.

When COVID hit, Mark was already skeptical. He was rallying people to protest health board mandates, showing up to counter BLM demonstrations, and watching Brad Little extend emergency powers for 900 days while importing refugees and growing government agencies with federal COVID money. Meanwhile, CrossPolitic’s own Water Boy was literally suing Brad Little in court for unconstitutionally shutting down Idaho churches.

The judge eventually called the lawsuit moot after Little quietly removed churches from the shutdown order. But the principle stands, and nobody in the Idaho GOP establishment seems to want to talk about it.

Mark wants to talk about all of it.

His platform is ambitious: eliminate property taxes entirely by unlocking Idaho’s natural resources (he’s done the math on silver mining alone — the numbers are staggering), crack down on illegal employment with a dedicated state police division, audit every dollar flowing into the Boise mayor’s office, shrink 200 executive branch agencies, and bring radical transparency to the governor’s office.

He wants to do a monthly governor’s podcast. Stand in front of real Idahoans and take real questions. Expose legislators burying good bills in drawers. Decentralize media and skip the mainstream press entirely.

“I love the Lord so much,” he says in the interview, “that I feel like I have two options — run and hide with my family, or wake up every day and fight. I chose to fight.”

Can he win? The math is tighter than you might think. Brad Little won the last primary with just 148,000 votes — in a state of two million people. Fitzpatrick has already earned endorsements from all seven Republican central committees in Idaho. Zero went to Little. Sheriffs, pastors, and conservative organizations are lining up. Grassroots momentum is building fast.

The primary is May 19th. You have to be a registered Republican to vote in it. And in Idaho, the primary is the only thing that matters — whoever comes out of it wins in November. Full stop.

We sat down with Mark for one of the more eye-opening conversations we’ve had on the show, and if you haven’t listened yet, you need to.

Polling Is a Weapon — Are You the Target?

Most people look at a poll headline and take it at face value. “90% of Americans support X.” “Trump’s approval hits historic low.” What Mark walked us through is how these numbers get manufactured — manipulative question framing, cherry-picked results, and coordinated timing designed to demoralize rather than inform.

His example: every major mainstream pollster dropped terrible Trump numbers the same weekend right before his 100-day mark — not by coincidence, but to feed a coordinated media narrative. Reuters was eight or nine points to the left of Mark’s numbers all through the fall of 2024. Then, right at the end, they quietly came back to where he was. Why? Because eventually they have to answer for their accuracy.

Mark’s methodology is different. No political party pays him. No pharmaceutical company is on retainer. He reaches roughly five million Americans through robo-dial and online panels — compared to outlets like Reuters/Ipsos, which run a curated panel of 50,000 people who essentially become a “fake America” that can be steered.

The difference shows up in the results.

A Generation the Establishment Doesn’t Understand

The most fascinating part of our conversation shifted to where the country is actually heading — and the data here is genuinely alarming if you’re paying attention — Generation Z. And we had Jackson Crapuchettes on the show as a cheerful representative of this alarming trend.

The civil war risk index Mark tracks is sitting at 43%. Political violence is the number one concern among under-40 voters. And the ideological split between generations isn’t just about party preference anymore — it’s a completely different set of values, grievances, and expectations.

Only 19% of under-30 voters support Israel over Palestine. Three-quarters of under-40 Trump voters support nationalizing major industries. Congress is still 60% boomer; Gen Z and millennials represent less than 15% of elected representatives nationwide. That math is about to change — fast.

What Mark is describing isn’t just a political realignment. It’s a generational revolt against a system that these young people believe has never worked for them. The median first-time homebuyer is now 40. Over 50% of Gen Z reads below an eighth-grade level. High-paying jobs have largely been offshored. The modern university, as one ad in the episode puts it, produces “spectators” — passive, demoralized, adrift.

And when you feel the system has failed you, you start pulling for anyone willing to burn it down.

The Epstein Problem

We brought up the Epstein files — not because it’s the most pressing policy issue of our time, but because of what it symbolizes. Mark’s framing stuck with us: it’s not the most important thing, it’s the most egregious thing. And for a generation that wasn’t around for the first wave of Epstein coverage, seeing that cover-up persist in real time is proof of something they already suspected — that the powerful protect each other and everyone else gets managed.

That’s not conspiracy thinking. That’s pattern recognition.

What Republicans Are Getting Wrong

Mark doesn’t sugarcoat it for anyone. His read is that the Republican establishment policy arm is still writing for an America that no longer exists. The under-40 Trump voter doesn’t want to be lectured about conservatism — they want someone to acknowledge that the system is rigged and do something about it. When Republicans merely use this as a talking point, instead of actually fixing the problem, they lose voters.

Democrats have figured this out, at least tactically. That’s why Bernie Sanders still polls better in youth matchups than almost anyone else Mark has tested.

The window to get this right is not unlimited.

The conversation centers on CrossPolitic’s new documentary How the SBC Got Played, which has been making waves again since its release, apparently making its way all the way to the office of Indiana’s lieutenant governor. Not bad for what Rod Martin calls “as inside baseball as it gets.”

The Trailer That Broke the Internet

The origin story of the documentary is worth telling: Jared Longshore, then vice president of Founders Ministries, was sitting in his Florida living room when his wife — whom he readily admits is the source of his best ministry ideas — suggested sending a camera crew to the 2019 SBC annual meeting to document what was happening with women in SBC pulpits. A week later, Chocolate Knox was on the floor of the convention with a long-distance lens and a “borrowed” voting card.

What they expected to film was a story about women’s ordination debates. What they actually captured was something bigger: Resolution 9, the now-infamous resolution that opened the door to critical race theory and intersectionality as “analytical tools” within the denomination. And then there was the ERLC event — Russell Moore, JD Greear, Beth Moore, and Rachel Denhollander on stage, delivering what many conservative messengers experienced as a masterclass in institutional manipulation.

When Knox cut the trailer and layered Owen Strachan’s voice over Denhollander’s 1-2 second blurry image, the internet erupted.

Was the Trailer Fair?

Pastor Gabe Hughes raised a pointed critique on X that many had at the time: that the edit was strategically foolish, winning Denhollander sympathy and derailing the broader project. It’s a fair question, and the CrossPolitic crew engages it seriously.

Rod Martin’s answer is blunt and, frankly, hard to dismiss: without that clip, nobody watches the documentary. In 2019, he notes, he spoke with a prominent megachurch pastor — a former state convention president — who admitted he couldn’t define critical race theory if his life depended on it. The trailer created the audience that the message needed.

Jared Longshore went deeper. The point wasn’t to score points against one woman. The point was to show what was happening to the men in that room — pastors who sat silently while someone from outside the church told them they weren’t competent to shepherd their own flocks, that they needed to outsource care of abuse victims to secular credentialed experts. That the room largely complied is the real indictment.

The Groups in the Room

One of the sharpest moments in the conversation comes when Rod Martin breaks down the factions that allowed this to happen. There were the cynical operators who used both critical theory and the abuse scandal as leverage to remove conservative enemies and install their own people. There were the weak men who couldn’t afford professionally to take a stand. And then — by far the largest group — there were the men who simply could not believe that people they loved and respected could be doing something wrong.

That last group is the most important one to understand, because they’re still there. In every institution. In every denomination.

Has the SBC Learned Its Lesson?

Cautiously, partially, maybe. Rod Martin expresses genuine hope about the upcoming convention in Orlando and the potential election of Willie Rice — notably, one of the only major SBC leaders to publicly repent of his role in the woke drift and articulate a clear correction. But the executive committee is still a problem. The seminaries are still a problem. And the women-in-ministry issue that started all of this has still not been resolved with any real teeth.

The broader warning is worth consideration: institutions matter, politics is inescapable, and the Baptist in the pew is still more conservative than the insiders who tend to show up to vote.

The garden got overgrown because people stopped tending it.

What happened? Rachel Denhollander happened. And with her, the full machinery of the #MeToo movement arrived inside the largest Protestant denomination in America.

In this last week’s live episode, Gabe Rench and Chocolate Knox sat down to unpack the full arc of what CrossPolitic has been covering — from that explosive 2019 trailer through their recently released documentary How the SBC Got Played, which has now been watched by SBC presidents, pastors, and denominational leaders across the country. The response has been striking: many of them, Knox says, finally feel like they aren’t crazy for having doubted the Denhollander narrative from the beginning.

The conversation is raw, honest, and at times deeply personal. Knox recounts watching Pastor Tom Ascol — a statesman, an insider, a gentleman who got every major figure in the SBC to agree to be on camera — get abandoned in real time by the very men who had committed to stand with him. He watched Ascol fall out of his chair unconscious in a Sunday school class the week after the trailer dropped, under the kind of pressure that Knox describes as coming “from everywhere at once — at your friends, at your wife, at other companies.” It was total war, waged by people who understood that if you can’t fight the accusation directly, you attack everything around the accused.

But the episode isn’t just retrospective. It’s a careful theological and strategic analysis of how conservative Christian institutions get taken down — and it’s even more relevant now than it was in 2019.

The key insight, drawn in part from Gary North’s Crossed Fingers (a free PDF download at garynorth.com, and worth every minute), is that liberals don’t attack conservative institutions on their strongest ground. They find the weakness. And for Christians, the weakness is almost always the same: we love people. We don’t want to be seen as hard-hearted. We don’t want to appear indifferent to victims. And so when someone arrives cloaking a political agenda underneath a genuine moral concern — sexual abuse, racial justice, women’s voices — the instinct of good-hearted Christians is to lower the drawbridge.

What Knox argues — and what the documentary demonstrates in painful detail — is that lowering the drawbridge is exactly what destroys your ability to actually help the people you’re trying to protect. The moment you accept the framing that “institution-protecting” and “victim-protecting” are opposite poles, you’ve already lost. You’ve handed your opponents a weapon they will use against you indefinitely. Biblical justice doesn’t work that way. It holds every accusation to the same evidentiary standard, treats every accused person as innocent until proven guilty, and demands that false accusers bear the judgment they sought to bring on others. That framework protects victims. The alternative just empowers accusers.

There’s also a note of genuine grace running through this episode. Knox talks about Tom Buck — a man who initially lit him up for going after the Denhollander narrative, who later went through his own encounter with that same machine, and who then came back privately and publicly to say he was wrong. Knox received it. No “I told you so.” Just: let’s make sure this never happens again.

That’s the spirit of this whole conversation. Not score-settling. Not triumphalism. But the kind of honest reckoning that makes genuine reform possible.

A Father Who Knew No “Consequence”

Vince opened with a story. Born in 1963 on a cotton plantation in Haywood County, Tennessee — home to the most violent KKK chapter in the country — Vince’s father didn’t raise his children on grievance. He raised them on hard work, faith, and fearlessness. When Vince later discovered that the Grand Wizard of the Klan had lived just down the road from them, he called his father, expecting some buried trauma to surface. His father’s response: “No consequence.” He told his son that he had simply walked up to the man, shown him his .45, and made clear what would happen if he came near his family. End of problem.

That story became the thesis of the conversation: you are not oppressed because of your skin color. You are oppressed when you are weak.

The Iron Triangle

Drawing from his first book and five years working inside a prison, Vince described what he calls “the Iron Triangle” — the interlocking system of Black preachers, Black politicians, and civil rights workers who have functioned as paid conduits between the Democratic Party and the Black community. Their job, he argues, was never liberation. It was to keep Black voters loyal to the party by perpetuating a narrative of victimhood, while personally profiting from the chaos those communities were mired in.

April reinforced this, noting that the real tragedy is that legitimate historical grievances — real injustices — were weaponized. Instead of turning the Black community toward the sovereignty of God and the sufficiency of Scripture, movement leaders turned them toward government. “God was sovereign in all of that,” she said, pointing to the story of Joseph as a framework for understanding suffering without surrendering to victimhood.

From an Upward Trajectory to a Freefall

Vince pointed to a striking historical data point: between 1940 and 1960, the Black community achieved the greatest reduction in poverty in American history, dropping from roughly 80% to 30% in poverty. That trajectory, he argues, was deliberately derailed. The civil rights movement, deeply infiltrated by Marxist ideology, redirected Black aspirations from God, family, and self-sufficiency toward government dependency.

The Moynihan Report of 1965 saw it coming. When Daniel Patrick Moynihan warned that the breakdown of the Black family was catastrophic and proposed using federal resources to restore the father as the head of the household, the civil rights establishment — including Black feminist voices aligned with Martin Luther King Jr.’s organization — rejected it outright. In one generation, the out-of-wedlock birth rate in the Black community flipped from 25% to 75%.

“They wanted control,” Vince said flatly. “They have 90% of the vote. Why would they change a thing?”

Is Black Culture Worth Saving?

The conversation turned to a debate Vince had with commentator Jason Whitlock about whether Black culture is even salvageable. Whitlock’s answer: burn it down. Vince’s answer is more surgical. What the culture currently displays — the hip-hop ethos of hyper-promiscuity, broken families, criminality, and dependency — is not Black culture. It is what the federal government and the left manufactured after hollowing out the real thing.

Real Black culture, Vince argued, is the gospel choir, the barbecue, the father who builds his own house by 29, the mother who keeps her parents close. April added that the goal isn’t cultural redemption — it’s the gospel, which redeems people out of every broken culture. A remnant always remains.

The Call to Courage

Both guests ended with the same note: courage. Call the false prophets by name. Don’t nibble around the edges. Confront the liars in the pulpit the way Jesus confronted the Sanhedrin. And stop fearing the people who have power over you only when you give them permission.

“A brave man looks the devil in the eye and calls him a devil,” Vince said.

Two weeks before October 7th, UPenn hosted what he described as a parade of anti-American, antisemitic, and terror-glorifying speakers at a university-organized Palestine Rights Literature Festival. When the attacks came, two of his professors publicly called the footage “beautiful sites to wake up to.” Yakovi published an op-ed, and that has launched him into the conservative public discourse.

When the hosts of Crosspolitic sat down with Yakoby at AmFest, the conversation cut through many of the polite fictions of conservative coalition politics, revealing at least five significant fault lines.

On Campus Antisemitism

This was the one area of broad consensus, though even here the framing differed. Yakoby told the story of the Hillel break-in and the Chabad vandalism at UPenn in the weeks before October 7th, and the subsequent congressional hearing where university presidents visibly squirmed when asked whether calling for genocide of Jews violated their conduct codes.

Everyone at the table agreed the double standard was damning: professors were fired for saying they planned to vote for Trump, while those openly glorifying Hamas faced no consequences. But Yakoby framed this primarily as a free speech and institutional consistency issue. The Crosspolitic hosts framed it as a moral and civilizational one — evidence of a culture that had abandoned its Christian foundations.

On Tucker Carlson

Yakoby argued that Tucker Carlson is a massive problem for the right. His case was specific: Tucker interviewed the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran without pressing him on anything difficult, then admitted afterward he hadn’t asked the tough questions because the answers wouldn’t be honest. Yakoby’s response — then why platform him at all? — landed hard. He also pointed to Tucker’s purchase of a second home in Qatar, where the cross is legally banned from public display, and to a guest Tucker hosted downplaying the persecution of Nigerian Christians who later turned out to be a paid agent of the Nigerian government.

The hosts acknowledged some of these criticisms but focused more on the Tucker-Candace Owens-Charlie Kirk axis of the argument than on Tucker’s foreign policy posture. Yakoby argued that Tucker, not Ben Shapiro, was the bigger practical problem for Christians on the right — a claim the hosts wanted more time and evidence to confirm.

On Ben Shapiro and Conservative Identity

This is where the conversation really opened up. Pastor Toby argued that conservatism in America was defined by Christianity, that the founding documents were Christian documents, and that Ben Shapiro, for all the good he has done for conservatism — as a practicing Jew — cannot coherently define or represent American conservatism because he has rejected the very foundation it rests on. While conservative Jews can certainly help the movement (and Shapiro has), there is ultimately an internal inconsistency.

Yakoby pushed back firmly. He pointed to George Washington’s letter to the Hebrew congregation of Rhode Island, in which Washington explicitly welcomed Jewish Americans as full participants in national life. He noted that Ben Shapiro’s most consistent public advice to young men is to attend church. He argued, pointedly, that Shapiro has probably gotten more young men into church pews than most pastors in the country — to which Pastor Toby, to his credit, conceded: “That’s probably true.”

The disagreement here was genuine and unresolved. It touches something real: can a coalition built on Christian foundations be coherently led or even substantially shaped by people outside that tradition? Yakoby thinks the answer is obviously yes, and the founders thought so too. Toby thinks the logic eventually runs out and ends up with Drag Queen story hours.

On Religious Freedom and the Founding

Embedded in the Ben Shapiro debate was a disagreement about what the First Amendment actually meant. Toby argued that religious freedom at the founding was about denominational freedom among Christians — a reaction to the Anglican establishment in Britain — and was never intended as a universal invitation for public worship of all religions. Nine of the thirteen original colonies had established Christian denominations, he noted; the dispute was about which one to choose at the federal level, not whether America should be Christian.

Yakoby again cited Washington’s letter to the Hebrew congregation as direct counter-evidence of a more pluralistic intent, and pushed back on the practical implications of Toby’s view. Toby stated that while he had no objection to Jews or Muslims practicing privately in their homes, public mosques and public calls to prayer were contrary to what built this nation. Yakoby didn’t accept that reading, and the exchange illustrated how much hangs on whether you read the founding as a Christian settlement or a pluralist one.

On the Practical Costs of Drifting From Christianity

The conversation ended on a note that had some common ground underneath it. Toby’s concern — which Yakoby didn’t entirely dismiss — was that as “constitutional rights” drift from their explicitly orthodox Christian foundations, moral compromises accumulate. His example: prominent conservatives, including outlets like The Blaze and PragerU, congratulated Dave Rubin on his surrogacy arrangement — purchasing and manufacturing babies with his homosexual partner. Once you remove the specifically Christian theological grounding, Toby argued, the Old Testament (all by itself) will tend to get blurrier and blurrier, and “conservative” becomes a label that can be stretched to cover almost anything.

Yakoby’s implicit counter was that Ben Shapiro, at least, is not the one doing the stretching. But both men seemed to agree that something is being lost as the coalition expands — they just disagreed about who was losing it, and why.

Rench’s Starting Position

Rench started with a two-category framework: usury, which he defined as charging interest on loans made to the poor for basic needs, is clearly sinful and unbiblical; but what he called “lawful biblical interest” — earning a return on capital deployed in a business context — is a legitimate and distinct practice. He pointed to the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25 as evidence that Jesus expected a return on invested money and used the analogy of renting out a lawnmower to illustrate his point. If charging for the use of a physical asset like a mower is acceptable, why would charging for the use of money be different? To Rench, both are simply private property put to productive use.

Wyley’s Position: All Interest Is Usury

Wyley pushed back firmly, arguing that the distinction Rench was drawing doesn’t hold up under scriptural scrutiny. In his view, usury and interest are the same thing — not two categories but one. He cited Nehemiah 5, where Nehemiah condemns the charging of even 1% interest and calls a public assembly to repent, with no distinction made between rich borrowers and poor ones. Wyley also noted that the church condemned money-lending as a mortal sin for roughly 1,500 years — practitioners could be denied a Christian burial — and that the redefining of interest as something distinct from usury only began in the last 300 to 400 years.

Wiley interpreted the Parable of the Talents differently as well: rather than endorsing usury, he argued the lazy servant was characterizing his master as a thief, and the master’s sarcastic reply — “you should have at least given it to the bankers” — was not a commendation of banking but a condemnation of the servant’s sloth. Wyley also raised a systemic economic argument: in a hard-currency economy, universal usury is mathematically unsustainable because there is never enough currency in circulation to repay both principal and interest, leading inevitably to foreclosure cycles, wealth concentration, and eventually national collapse. He sees America’s current debt crisis as divine judgment for ignoring this law.

Reece’s Middle Ground

Reece staked out a position between the two, agreeing with Rench that a distinction exists between business lending and charity lending, but he added important nuance. He argued that usury — taking interest on a loan given to a brother for immediate relief — is a sin but not necessarily a civil crime, placing it in the jurisdiction of church courts rather than civil magistrates. Business interest, on the other hand, he viewed as neither sin nor crime, analogous to rent on property.

Reece used the term “time value of money” to explain why a seller accepting payments over time might reasonably expect more than face value. However, he also emphasized a principle of Christian equity: even in legitimate business lending, brothers must deal reasonably with one another when hardship arises, and civil courts have historically provided “equitable relief” in such cases. Reece agreed with Wyley that commerce — voluntary exchange where both parties benefit — is categorically different from pure money-lending, but he was unwilling to condemn all forms of interest as criminal.

Conclusion: Where They Disagreed Most

The sharpest tension was between Wyley and Reece on whether usury constitutes a civil crime. Wyley insisted it does — with restitution required — while Reece argued it falls short of civil criminality, comparing it to God’s command for farmers to leave gleanings, which carries no legal penalty. Rench landed closer to Reese, though he acknowledged Wyley’s commerce-versus-obligation distinction as genuinely compelling.

The discussion began with reactions to a tense exchange the previous night between Ben Shapiro and Tucker Carlson. Robinson criticized Shapiro for rejecting “unity” and attempting to gatekeep who qualifies as a conservative, especially in response to figures like Candace Owens and Tucker platforming controversial guests. Robinson argued Shapiro was reacting defensively, particularly regarding criticism of Israel, and accused him of attempting to silence voices rather than debate them.

The hosts pushed back, suggesting Shapiro’s concern was not about shutting down questions, but about irresponsible “question stacking” that fuels suspicion without evidence. They distinguished between legitimate inquiry and tabloid-style insinuation. Robinson countered that asking difficult questions about Israel or foreign policy should not be treated as taboo, especially after experiences like COVID where questioning official narratives proved necessary.

Tension deepened over journalistic standards. The hosts suggested Tucker sometimes applies uneven scrutiny — aggressively challenging establishment Republicans like Ted Cruz, but giving softer interviews to figures like Andrew Tate or Nick Fuentes, who have influence over young men. Robinson defended Tucker, arguing that politicians deserve harsher treatment than private figures, and that Christian leaders should do better at offering young men real masculine guidance so they aren’t drawn to controversial personalities.

The conversation then shifted to Israel, Islam, and accusations of anti-Semitism. Robinson argued Christians must reject both Islam and secular Zionism, describing Islam as wholly false while criticizing Israel’s government actions in Gaza. The hosts emphasized the need for careful distinctions: opposing Israeli policy is not inherently anti-Semitic, and criticizing Islam is not the same as hating Muslims. They warned that public discourse suffers from collapsing these categories.

A particularly sharp disagreement arose over the term “Judeo-Christian.” Robinson rejected the term as a post–World War II political invention that falsely equates Christianity and Judaism and potentially blurs the uniqueness of Christ. He argued Christians should not dilute their faith language to protect Jews from prejudice.

Pastor Toby countered that while the term has often been weaponized to downplay important differences between Jews and Christians, there are legitimate theological connections between the Old and New Testaments. He stressed covenant continuity with the patriarchs and the biblical claim in Romans 11 that Jews are “beloved for the sake of the fathers.” Robinson insisted that Christianity must remain clearly distinct from Judaism, warning that careless language can imply dual paths to salvation.

The debate broadened into Christian nationalism and foreign policy. Robinson, as a British Catholic, argued America behaves like a reluctant empire spreading democracy rather than Christianity. He criticized NATO, U.S. entanglements, and unconditional support for Israel, urging clearer Christian priorities. The hosts probed how Christian nationalists should structure foreign alliances if covenant relationships should exist only with Christian nations.

Finally, the conversation turned to Protestantism and Catholicism. Robinson attributed England’s moral decline to the English Reformation, arguing that removing papal authority led to doctrinal instability and eventual liberalization. He claimed Protestant denominations inevitably fracture and drift into progressive theology, while the Roman Catholic Church remains doctrinally stable due to magisterial authority.

The hosts rejected this historical narrative, arguing that true catholicity is defined by faithfulness to Scripture, not institutional continuity. They cited C.S. Lewis’s image of the church as a great army through history, emphasizing that Christ builds His church despite denominational fragmentation. They acknowledged sinful divisions but suggested that denominational clarity can sometimes promote honest cooperation.

The exchange concluded with mutual affirmation: despite theological differences, they remain co-belligerents defending Christendom against secularism and Islam. Yet unresolved tensions remained — over Israel, ecclesiology, authority, Protestant fragmentation, and whether ultimate visible unity lies ahead.

Throughout, the dominant theme was the struggle to maintain unity without sacrificing truth — and how fragile that balance feels in modern conservative and Christian discourse.

Freeman explained his long-standing work in economic warfare and national security, including consulting for U.S. defense and intelligence agencies. A major focus of the discussion was his effort to restore gold and silver as legal tender at the state level. He noted that five states—Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Missouri—have now passed laws recognizing gold and silver as legal currency. Implementation is underway, with systems expected to be operational in 2026.

Freeman outlined the historical context: gold ceased functioning as money beginning in 1933 under FDR’s confiscation and then fully in 1971 when Nixon ended the gold standard. Since then, the IRS has classified gold as a commodity or collectible, subject to capital gains tax. This means if someone buys gold at $2,000 per ounce and later spends it when it’s worth $4,300, they owe capital gains tax on the increase. Freeman argues that if gold is recognized as currency, it should not be taxed when used in transactions—just like Federal Reserve notes are not taxed when spent.

Under the proposed state systems, individuals would deposit gold in state-approved depositories, allowing secure, regulated electronic transfers—essentially enabling debit-card transactions backed by gold. Freeman is also advocating for a presidential executive order eliminating capital gains taxes when gold is used as money, potentially drawing significant gold investment into the U.S. and strengthening monetary stability amid $38.5 trillion in national debt and persistent inflation.

Freeman then introduced his broader framework, described in his forthcoming book The Four Horsemen of the American Apocalypse. He identifies four major threats to America: Communist China, political Islam, globalist elites (such as the World Economic Forum), and domestic “traitors and cowards” who enable these forces. He argues that all four threats were empowered in 1971 when the U.S. left the gold standard.

He traced how Nixon’s economic moves—establishing the petrodollar system with Saudi Arabia and opening trade with China—unleashed long-term consequences. The petrodollar arrangement strengthened Saudi influence and facilitated the growth of strict Islamic movements abroad. Meanwhile, U.S. capital investment in China helped build its industrial and financial power, making it a major holder of U.S. Treasury debt. Freeman also links the rise of globalist economic coordination through institutions like the World Economic Forum to this same monetary shift.

On tariffs, Freeman defended President Trump’s use of them as a constitutional and strategic economic tool. While tariffs can increase consumer prices, he argues they are sometimes necessary in economic warfare situations, particularly when countries like China dump goods below cost to destroy American industries such as rare earth mineral production. He sees tariffs as a blunt but legitimate instrument to defend domestic capacity when other nations are not operating in good faith.

Freeman also presented the “Economic Justice Board,” a proposal aimed at addressing affordability and restoring opportunity for younger generations. He argues that abandoning sound money has fueled inflation and eroded purchasing power, making housing, education, and family formation more difficult. Solutions include restoring sound money, reducing excessive regulation (especially in housing and energy), securing borders to reduce artificial housing demand, and encouraging wiser educational choices rather than subsidizing nonproductive degrees.

He emphasized the importance of restoring reward-based economics: people must see tangible benefit for hard work. Drawing from the first American pilgrims’ experience, he argued that socialism failed while private property and incentive produced prosperity. While acknowledging that wealth disparities will always exist, he stressed equal opportunity over equal outcomes.

Finally, Freeman argued that Christian principles offer the ultimate solution. Rather than relying on government redistribution, believers should practice voluntary generosity. Citing John Wesley’s maxim—“Earn as much as you can, save as much as you can, give as much as you can”—Freeman contended that a society shaped by biblical stewardship and cheerful giving would naturally address wealth gaps and strengthen civilization over time.

Crickets.

The American Church has been asleep at the wheel.

For our Ten Year Anniversary, CrossPolitic is presenting “Ten Shots of Sanity” — over the course of the first few months of 2026, we are producing 10 deep dive mini documentaries on cultural topics that affect us all with our trademark insistence that we analyze everything with the Word of God.

These are not vaguely “conservative” talking points with a few Bible verses sprinkled on top. These are hard-hitting, highly produced cultural Bible studies — the sort of thing you could show to your small group Bible study or college group.

On this first episode, we traced the story of the pro-life movement, beginning where few ever have begun: 8 days after Roe and the first legislative attempt to protect human life from conception.

Seven years later, when a coalition of pro-lifers, led by many Roman Catholics, finally got Ronald Reagan elected, he gathered them in a room together to discuss strategy. The story goes that acrimony broke out and Reagan walked out of the room saying, ‘when you figure it out, let me know.’

Dobbs struck down the monstrosity of Roe, but the divisions have only continued.

If abortion is the murder of the unborn, why can’t we put aside personal preferences and work to see the bloodshed end?

Part of the problem is that the American Church is woefully ignorant about how law works. We don’t know God’s Word, and so we don’t know God’s law. But the Old Testament law is a “tutor,” elementary school for God’s people to learn wisdom for all of life, including political life.

While the law of God is perfect, holy, just, and true, what we find is that God’s perfect and eternal law was adapted to Israel’s situation, including the hardness of their hearts. God’s law applied to nations like a set of braces, meant to straighten crooked teeth.

This first episode in the Ten Shots of Sanity series shows how the laws of the blood avenger, polygamy, divorce, and adultery all demonstrate that God Himself established incremental laws to slowly drive violence and bloodshed out of Israel.

This approach defends the heroic and prophetic work of those who call for immediate abolition of abortion and equal protection of the unborn under the law, but it also defends the faithful work of many others who have fought for heartbeat laws and similar protections.

This episode doesn’t try to water down differences; it simply pleads with all true pro-lifers to stop fighting each other. If you can’t in good conscience sign on to a bill or strategy at least don’t openly oppose it.

The Thesis:

Chase Davis wrote Offensive Christianity to address what he sees as a fundamental problem in modern evangelicalism: “The modern era and particularly modern Christian churches have been teaching kind of a emasculated Christianity. They’ve been teaching a disembodied Christianity where it’s all about our thoughts and feelings. There’s not a lot of action. There’s not a lot of strength, vitality.”

The Problem: “Low T” Churches and Spiritual Xanax

Davis identifies a disconnect between what men experience on Friday nights (conquest, competition, dominance) and Sunday mornings, where “the same behavior that was encouraged on Friday night was often tarnished, suppressed, even called sinful.”

He describes the modern evangelical church experience as therapeutic rather than transformative: “The music is particularly tuned to produce emotion... they’re going to dim the lights. We’re gonna sing songs to kind of a boyfriend in the sky. And then the preaching itself is rarely applied to life.”

“It’s like a kindergarten where the teacher’s like, ‘Hey, everybody just calm down. Everybody get along. Remember, love everybody.’ And yeah, Jesus, have a good week... That’s what they think it means to glorify God. That’s what they think it means to follow Christ is to be pacified.”

The Solution: Theological Anthropology Grounded in Creation

Unlike other books on masculinity that focus on hobbies or masculine tropes, Davis goes back to first principles: “Let’s get into theological anthropology. Like what does it mean to be a man embodied? You know, like what are our bodies for? and how do we put them into good service for the Lord?”

“Jesus Christ didn’t come to overthrow creation. Jesus Christ came to redeem all things to himself. Grace restores nature. And so we don’t look at creation as some kind of mistake. It’s actually a design.”

Priority Areas for Discipleship

1. Fitness and Physical Strength

Davis prioritizes fitness because “to the degree that our bodies have been taken advantage of or we’ve done harm to our own bodies through what we consume and our lifestyle our laziness... it will impact our ability to honor the Lord in other areas.”

“As you busy yourself doing something like that you are learning to control your body which is you’re teaching yourself to control like you have dominion over yourself. That’s going to teach you how to have dominion over your emotions as well.”

He also emphasizes practical necessity: “We need strong men to defend our families. We need strong men to defend our churches. And we need strong men to defend our nation.”

2. Aesthetics and Self-Presentation

Davis addresses how men dress and carry themselves: “It’s good for a man to have broad shoulders. It’s good for a man to look fit... The way you dress, the way you carry yourself, the way you talk, the way you behave, all these things have an impact on other people.”

3. Public Courage and Conflict

“Christian men need to get comfortable calling out the sins of the world. I mean, bottom line, they need to get comfortable in conflict.”

“We need to go on the offense. We need to stop playing defense... And don’t be surprised when you go on offense that your enemy thinks you’re offensive because that’s what a good offense does is you’re offensive.”

What “Offensive” Means in Practice

* Calling out idols in the public square

* Political engagement without nuance that obscures truth

* Speaking plainly about cultural issues (immigration, abortion, etc.)

* Leading homes even when it requires saying “no” to wives

* Being willing to be perceived as offensive “as long as they’re doing it for the glory of God and according to God’s word”

Avoiding the Ditches

For young men without fathers or proper discipleship, Davis recommends basics:

* Submit to Christ and join a church

* Get a job and work hard

* Kill sin and take ownership of your life

* Find a spouse

* Find fellowship with other men in male-only spaces

* Channel godly ambition toward productive ends

“It’s definitely a positive vision even though we’re going on the attack and attacking things left and right... A lot of the stuff that was very common like wisdom stuff... 300 years ago has just been forgotten and it’s just normal stuff. We just want to have a job, get married, join a church, be a productive member of society.”

But seriously: for thousands of years, parents knew that one of the tools they had to teach their children obedience was corporal discipline: the rod.

“Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him” (Prov. 22:15).

But over the last hundred years, moderns have drawn themselves up to their full enlightened height and announced that they know better than everyone. They know better than their parents and grandparents; they know better than the founders of America; they know better than the entire Christian tradition; they know better than the Bible — better than God.

Of course they don’t just come out and say it like that. They say things like: “the older interpretation of the Bible was mistaken” and “you can’t base your parenting on ancient Hebrew poetry.” But it really just boils down to arrogance.

Well, ok, it’s arrogance, with several helpings of laziness and cowardice on the side. It seems easier not to spank little kids. It’s easier in the moment to let them have their own way. And besides, you get all kinds of judgy looks and comments from family and friends if you actually admit that you spank your kids. Feels easier to just go with the therapeutic flow. It all seems easier until they are bigger than you and can drive. Then it’s ten tons of trouble.

That’s why we did this latest episode of CrossPolitic on spanking: Spank Your Kids Save America. And while the title is provocative; we don’t think it’s an overstatement at all. You can’t raise generations of virtuous, self-disciplined Americans on the humanistic treacle of “gentle parenting” and “empathetic therapy.”

We tried that, and we’re getting our report card currently.

Minneapolis? Check. Prisons filling with criminals? Check. Abortion and sexual debauchery? Check. Nursing homes filling up with unwanted parents and grandparents? Check. It’s not just a moral failure; it’s the beginning of complete societal collapse. You can’t build civilization without kids, and you can’t build a stable civilization without kids that are taught self-control, obedience to lawful authority, and ultimately the fear of God in Christ.

My wife (who makes a couple of cameos in this episode) has taught the fourth grade for many years, and she says she can usually tell which kids have grown up being consistently disciplined. She says that those kids have a noticeable inner stability compared to those who haven’t. The kids who have grown up with that kind of loving discipline have a gravitational center.

Thankfully spanking is still mostly legal in America, although it is certainly frowned upon in many respectable circles. It is often listed with various acts of cruelty and abuse: biting, kicking, spitting, and the like. But biblical discipline is love. God disciplines us as His children (Heb. 12:6). We know that we belong to Him because He “scourges” us, just as faithful fathers do their own children (Heb. 12:9-10). “Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him” (Prov. 13:24).

In other words, every day, every parent is faced with a choice about the kind of America they want to build. Every day, every parent has the option of building a free and prosperous America or continuing to contribute to the sad chaos in too many of our cities. This choice begins with believing the gospel, and then determining to obey that gospel. Rest in the faithfulness of Christ and then from that place of peace, lovingly shepherd your children to Christ.

Some clarification on comments I made on our show titled: “Will Christianity Today Sell to Canon Press?” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lH6aDjC6R0A

I said on the show yesterday about the 29:30 mark, that Pastor Burk Parsons of St. Andrews Chapel was suspended by the Central Florida Presbytery. This did happen, and Burk is currently appealing the judgment. After talking to a member of St. Andrews Chapel today, it seems the presbytery might need its own house cleaned and that Burk is right in appealing his suspension. That is the other side of the story: Proverbs 18:17. So, while my original comments are true, I wanted to add that Burk is appealing his suspension. 

My comments on St. Andrews Pastoral Salaries:

I had read that the pastoral salaries were not released to their congregation and that Burk’s salary was $410k and their two assistant pastors salary was about $300k each. While I have no problem with paying good Pastors good money, the issue that caught my attention was that pastoral salary information was being withheld from the conjuration and some of the elders. This was supposedly reported from the regional presbytery, which I was willing to believe the local presbytery at this point, and come to find out that the presbytery never required St. Andrews to release any of the salary info. So, I was under the impression that the presbytery released the salary info, but the presbytery released nothing what so ever about the salary info. So, my comments on the salary drama were incorrect. So, I retract those comments and as forgiveness from the leadership of St. Andrews Chapel for adding to the rumor mill.
