No one I know was hurt, but our city mourns. Today, I learned of a horrific shooting at a Hanukkah celebration in Australia. Unspeakable. That said, I will never capitulate to terror and fear. Feeding the violence machine only makes it stronger, and it is never sated.

This story was in the pipeline before the incident. I think it’s very appropriate today.

Winters in Chelm are cold. The Black Forest is especially dark, and the frigid air gets into the bones.

Most years, the arrival of Chanukah is a welcome break, an excuse to rejoice and celebrate, and maybe overeat.

This year… in one house… not so much…

A few years back, I had the lucky fortune to tell multicultural holiday stories at a K-5 elementary school on the day before the holiday break. There were about 400 kids and teachers crammed into a wide corridor. They listened to tales about Christmas and Hanukkah, Ramadan, Diwali, Kwanzaa, the Solstice, and the New Year.

And they sat still for about an hour! When we were done, we discovered we’d managed to record the best live holiday storytelling concert album ever!

We released it on all sorts of channels (see below for links) but I just found this outtake, which I kindof wish we’d included.What amazing energy!
