Sharon Powers is a writer, producer and small business owner. We first met when she was an Executive Producer of my feature film, Belle. Sharon’s written numerous books and screenplays, and opened Pink Lava, the 6th women’s surf shop in the country.

Sharon’s feature film screenplay, One More, is a horror film about a group of surfers that get attacked by (surfing) vampires. I was immediately drawn to the high concept, the genre fusion so came on board to develop it as director.

Our conversation covers Sharon’s process of writing the script, our years of development on the film, crossover between surf genre and the slasher/horror genres, and our mutual passion for Blade. Included below is Sharon’s latest script draft, along with my Director’s Companion.

Girl In the Lake is a feature film about a girl who thinks she’s a mermaid and, wanting to find her prince, drags men into the lake and accidentally drowns them.

In other words “a dark version of Splash.”

Mickey Bloom wrote the script for the feature film. We co-developed the story together with the intent that I would direct the feature… but we still haven’t shot it.

This is a conversation with Mickey during which we discuss our creative process from the very beginning, track through the development of the feature and end with when we decided (about 6 years later) to shoot the short film version in Minneapolis to see our characters on screen.

The short sold out festival screenings at MSPIFF, SF Indie Shorts and won “Best Rom-Com” at Indie Short Fest before landing in an installation at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in 2022.
