In this heartfelt episode, I share a powerful conversation with my 10-year-old son, Aidyn, sparked during our morning drive to school. His reflection on Donald Trump’s proposal to eliminate the Department of Education stopped me in my tracks:

“What does he think America is? His playbox? All he’s doing is building up sandcastles.”

To Aidyn, sandcastles are fleeting—ego-driven creations that crumble with the tide. And in that moment, I realized: His ability to see power so clearly didn’t come from nowhere—it came from stories.

Books have been our bridge to understanding justice, humanity, and the weight of power. Together, we’ve explored how power can lift or destroy, and how justice demands more than showmanship—it demands care, courage, and connection.

But this conversation isn’t just about politics—it’s about parenting. It’s about how we prepare our children, especially Black children, to navigate a world that often misjudges them. Through stories, Aidyn has learned to recognize injustice, challenge false narratives, and see beyond fear-laden stereotypes to the truth.

Because storytelling isn’t just an art—it’s a tool for connection and change.

In this episode, I also draw from the wisdom of:📚 Deepa Iyer, author of We Are the Builders, who reminds us that building a just world requires every one of us to understand our roles and responsibilities.📚 Rio Cortez, author of The ABCs of Black History & The ABCs of Women's History, who urges us to know and share our histories with our children, ensuring their stories are rooted in truth.

A US Army veteran and educator, Winsome is the author of the delightful children's book "Soul Food Sunday".

In the first segment of the episode, Winsome shares about her creative process, passion for cooking, and love for capturing the beauty of submarines in photographs. She also explains why she believes recipes should never be a secret and encourages us to experiment in the kitchen.

Next, we explore the importance of teaching children to be self-sufficient in the kitchen. We discuss a book about a young boy's culinary journey and share our own kitchen tales. We also discuss cooking tips and highlight the fascinating chemistry of cooking.

In the third segment, we delve into the use of repetition and onomatopoeia in children's books, drawing examples from Winsome's book "Cooking with Grandma". Winsome shares her personal experiences using these tools to make reading more enjoyable for children.

Rarely do we get to step into the mind of a child and learn what the experience is for them. Once the actual adoption process is finalized, it’s easy to negate all the emotions the child experiences. And while adoption is beautiful, the child often struggles through trauma, separation, and loss. 

 

Before children can even explore adjusting to this new life, their emotions around adoption deserve our attention. 

 

This author spotlight is on Anna Maria DiDio, MSW. Ana Maria is a writer, speaker, women's advocate, adoption life coach, and mother. 

 

Using her own experience, Anna Maria started journaling her adoption adventure to Mexico and writing a memoir and children's book about adoption and blended families.

 

Her book Many People to Love encourages readers to explore what children think and feel about their new family and the family they may have left behind. A sensitive and powerful book that focuses on children's emotions and learning a new culture without losing their identity.

 

Throughout the conversation, we discuss the untold stories of adoption and blended families. Anna Maria shares why it's important to listen to children's voices about their adoption, how to help them process their unresolved emotions and issues, and how to guide and support them on this new journey.

 

She also talks about what led her to adopt, her family's challenges, and her advice to parents considering adoption.

In this episode, we have Leslie Gang in our author spotlight! Leslie is an avid theater enthusiast, educator, children’s book author, and co-founder of Hindi's Libraries, a non-profit organization that donates new and gently used books, founded in 2018 in memory of Dr. Hindi Krinsky. 

 

Hindi's Libraries has donated over 400,000 books and partnered with 650 organizations worldwide!

 

Leslie's book But Family is Forever, represents different types of families to help children respect differences and focus on what matters most.

 

During the conversation, we discuss diversity within the family, but also hone in on commonalities. Leslie also shares the bittersweet story of how Hindi's Libraries started, how they built family and community inside the organization, and how people can make a huge difference with books.

Aja published her first children's book, Shine: A Bedtime Story, in 2019, followed by The Almost Adventures of Plane Jane. Her third children's book, Plane Jane and the Capital Bee, released in Summer 2021.

We chat about the importance of inclusiveness, Etaine's roots and Irish proverbs, and her artistry which shines through the entire book!

Etaine Raphael is the author-illustrator of The Rhyme-Time Twins series, which has just begun! She was born and raised in Washington, D.C, and currently lives with her husband and two daughters in Northern Virginia. Before embarking on a writing career, she worked as a physical therapist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, mostly with men and women who had sustained traumatic amputations from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She now delights in writing and illustrating children's picture books and feels constantly inspired by her daughters to continue this mode of storytelling. 

Her debut children's picture book, A Blueberry Day, was released in March 2020.  

We are patiently awaiting the release of her third book, Search for Silver, releasing on May 23, 2022!

Etaine enjoys writing on inclusion, friendship, kindness, empathy, time in nature, and family togetherness.

Alyssa has tons of experience reading to kids - from kids birthday parties to her wonderful nephew that she reads to before bedtime!

She also is editor of The Evidence I Have Lived. She has been writing all her life and, when not authoring, she works as a freelance writer and editor in the western suburbs of Chicago with her husband and children.

As the parents of two little girls, she and her husband enjoy telling and writing bedtime stories that are fun, inspirational, and educational.

With a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Macro Social Work, she is dedicated to finding creative ways to help children learn how to express their emotions in healthy and meaningful ways. Chelsea is in the process of writing six more books to go along with her mental health series.

When she is not writing, she enjoys spending time watching television and funny movies with her husband and kids.

Her genres of books range from anthologies, romance, urban fiction, some horror, and recently children's books.

Jackson is also a mother and was inspired by her daughter to bring her long-time dream of a children's book to life.

Wanting a different experience from her own growing up for her daughter Ellie, Kimberly utilized a common occurrence for parents as inspiration for her debut children’s book, “Ellie & The Rainy Day.” What could have been another boring rainy day indoors turned into a fun and creative experience for Kimberly and Ellie.

After the success of “Ellie & The Rainy Day,” Kimberly decided to create more books with young Black and Brown children as the intended audience. From there 'Cocoa, Tea & Honey' was born!

Migrating to the US from Jamaica at a young age, Clarke adapted well and excelled at both sports and Academia. He used the self-starter attitude instilled in him from his father to start his entrepreneurial pursuits. Andre is passionate about investing in tech companies and trading commodities and foreign exchange. 

He’s adorned many professional hats, but the one thing that has remained consistent is his passion for tech and teaching children that their dreams are closer to reality than they think; a skill continuously being sharpened by his children. Father, brother, uncle, friend, proprietor; it’s the culmination of these attributes that have brought you Star Gaze.

Her picture book, One of Thirteen, stems from stories of her mother's childhood. Catherine is the mother of three sons, sibling of three brothers, grandmother of two granddaughters, with over fifty aunts and uncles, and over seventy-one cousins. 

She is a graduate of The College of Saint Rose, Albany, NY and has worked in the field of regular and special education for over twenty years. Catherine hopes that sharing her family stories will encourage kids to explore the history and heritage with their own families. Catherine has lived in New York’s Capital Region her entire life. Her picture book, One of Thirteen, includes family questions to spark conversations with children and a family tree chart to fill out together.

She currently has two books out, and a third one currently being illustrated (due to release in March). She has worked in afterschool programs for most of her career. She also worked in a reading intervention program at a local public school for a couple of years. When she had her son, she decided to stay at home with him for a while, as well as pursue her dream of becoming a children's book author!

Katie recently won a 1st Place prize for both of her books in the 2020 Royal Dragonfly awards in the category of Picture Books 6 and Older!

When she's not writing, she creates decoupage paper collages that she sells at art shows.

With a passion for essentialist design and childlike imagination, JQ's practice consists of merging both to bring youthfulness into serious works and simplicity into fanciful works.

He is the illustrator behind Angela C. Styles book ‘Hair’. His most recent release, ‘The Moon Is Following Me’, in which he authored and illustrated is a fun and whimsical tale of a little boy trying to convince his family that the moon is following him every night. Do they believe him? No. But that doesn’t stop him from humorously trying anyway.

June loves working with kids. Meaghan is an elementary school librarian who lives on the Eastern Shore of Maryland with her husband and daughter. She loves sharing her love for yoga, meditation, and reading with others. The Power in Words is her second book. Her debut title, The Power in Me, encourages readers to use the power of their breath to diminish their fears and anxieties. She hopes her words will empower children.

PeTika is a middle-school teacher that loves to read non-fiction books. Through her life's rollercoaster, stemming from chronic weight issues as far back as she can remember, Tave developed a desire to shield young girls from the perils she faced growing up "big and tall." Reaching 6ft and 300 lbs. by the age of 13, life was hard, almost unbearable. She struggled to love herself and feel loved, for what seemed like forever. At the age of 22, she reached 427 lbs., but after giving birth to her first child, she vowed not to be the parent that could not keep up. After losing over 200 lbs. and having her 2nd child, a girl, the desire to shield her daughter from the hurt and pain she felt growing up, led Tave to write poems to use to strengthen her, and love herself, just the way she is. Fortunately, her daughter’s confidence is threatened by no-one, so Tave decided to turn each poem she wrote into a children's book collection, designed to motivate all girls around the world, no matter their shape or size. Out of that desire came the birth of BayaBooks.

In this episode, we honed in on child self-esteem and confidence.
