You can perform this cord-cutting ritual on the day of the full moon itself—Sunday, February 1st—or within a couple of days after. Full moon energy remains potent for several days, so trust your intuition when choosing the timing.

To perform this ritual, gather the following items:

* Two candles

* One candle represents you

* One candle represents whatever you are severing ties from

* Two small bowls or containers

* These should be able to hold the candles securely

* Salt or rice

* Used to fill the bowls and stabilize the candles

* Both salt and rice also serve as cleansing, grounding foundations

* A string or cord

* This will be wrapped around both candles

Before beginning, cleanse the space where you will perform the ritual. You can do this by smudging with sage, palo santo, or by using Florida water—whatever cleansing method resonates with you.

Preparing the Candles

Before wrapping the cord around the candles, clearly designate which candle represents what.

The most effective way to do this is by:

* Inscribing your name into the candle that represents you

* Inscribing the name of the person, situation, habit, or energy you are releasing into the other candle

Once the candles are designated:

* Tie the string or cord into a circle.

* Loop it a couple of times.

At the very beginning of this pivotal year, I noted that Jupiter’s ingress into Cancer—timed almost exactly with the summer solstice in June—would mark a major cosmic shift. Nearly a year later, the significance of that transition is unmistakably clear.

Jupiter in Cancer: Expansion Meets the Matriarch

Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, has long been known for its magnifying power. It expands whatever it touches—our hopes, our visions, our beliefs, our politics. Cancer, by contrast, is the Zodiac’s most nurturing sign, embodying emotional labor, protection, domesticity, and the sacred work of holding families and communities together.

I often describe Cancer as the “Matriarch of the Zodiac.” And it feels profoundly fitting that as patriarchal systems continue to crack and crumble, Jupiter has been spending an entire year amplifying the qualities of nourishment, care, and compassion. On November 12th, Jupiter—the planet of abundance, excess, luck, and prosperity—stations retrograde, where it will remain through March of 2026. Retrogrades invite reflection, revision, and reassessment, and Jupiter’s retrograde is no exception. We are being asked to consider how the spirit of the matriarchy can guide the ways we protect, support, and build community. To do this, we must unlearn patriarchal systems rooted in harm, neglect, and oppression. The Great Mother archetype is rising—but she requires participants, not spectators.

Pluto’s ongoing transit through Aquarius underscores this. Aquarius demands innovation, future-thinking, reinvention. As Pluto eradicates outdated norms, we are reminded that we are the new founders. We are responsible for imagining what comes next.

Full moons traditionally represent endings, completions, or moments of culmination, and because this one is a supermoon—appearing larger and brighter due to its closeness to Earth—its effects will feel especially intense.

This lunation highlights themes related to values, stability, and security, focusing on personal relationships, finances, and what we truly value in our lives. The energy of Taurus reminds us to ground ourselves and pay attention to what provides comfort and sustenance, both materially and emotionally.

With Mercury set to ingress the sign of Scorpio next week, will there be talks and discussions on ways to enact Martial law on the American public?

Time will tell; both Mars and Mercury will transit the sign of Scorpio throughout all of October, before Mercury stations retrograde in November.

And the only way to move through these “discontents,” is to confront them in true Aries fashion.

Healing follows once both luminaries retrograde back into the sign of Pisces, as a Neptune-inspired Solar Eclipse in Aries directs us forward to the other side of change and forgiveness (more to come on that).

To wield the energy afoot, bravely embodying the Warrior archetype as you take healing into your own hands, I want you to consider the following:

✍🏾 What/Whom am I holding onto that needs to be released?

✍🏾 Where am I not being fully honest and truthful with myself about the circumstances of my life that I continue to allow, or aspects of my way of living and being?

✍🏾 Am I sticking with a relationship that has reached its expiration date? Why?

✍🏾 Am I pursuing a career path that has the promise of financial security, but makes me miserable? Why?

✍🏾 Am I harboring any resentments that do, in fact, need to be acknowledged if not entirely expressed?

Having taken the time to honestly reflect, be sure to sit with whatever comes up for you and consider journaling your thoughts.

Remember that we listen. We do not judge.

It is this kind of direct healing that will prepare us for new chapters set to begin this spring…

The same kind of healing that will give us all the courage and direction needed for the times we are currently living.

So be gentle with you, and extend to yourself the same grace you would a child.

Venus, the planet of love, justice and abundance, will retrograde between the signs Aries and Pisces for the next six weeks.

During this last new moon lunation…

Close to the last day of the year…

This is it.

The final New Moon of 2024 peaks on Monday, December 30, at 5:27 p.m. ET in the sign of Capricorn.

Consider this a potent portal of energy to give birth to resolutions.

But remember that now is not the time to act.

First, we must perform a ritual of release, get clear on our vision for the New Year, and find the words to speak our vision into existence.

The winter season is a time to rest, restore, and recalibrate.

Spring is when we move forward with our plans.

This New Moon, however, is ripe with staying power. Capricorn the Sea Goat is known for its ambition and determination.

So in preparation for the upcoming lunation, and a solid chance to start anew, I invite you to take advantage of this liminal, in between space we find ourselves navigating, and consider the following writing prompts:

* What were some of the challenges you experienced this year?

* What did you learn about yourself from each challenge?

* What are you grateful for?

* What gifts, opportunities, accomplishments, and wins played out for you this year?

* What have those gifts, opportunities, accomplishments and wins taught you about yourself?

* What are you ready to let go of in 2024?

* What are you ready to lean into in 2025, and why?

These prompts were shared with me by a dear friend a couple of years ago, and as I consider and reflect on them entering the new year, I encourage you to do the same - responding with “I” statements - in preparation for a new harvest.

Let these questions be a prayer that guides you to the truth of your Soul. Take your time with each one. Allow yourself to confront the unwanted things that bubble to the surface, and allow yourself to be equally inspired at the same time.

When ready, set your new moon intentions on January 1, 2025, trusting that what follows will be what you’ve envisioned in your mind’s eye…

These were the reflection questions considered in last night’s Winter Solstice Gathering, followed by a “releasing ritual” that left all in attendance energetically lighter, rested, and prepared for a new year (the cliff notes were also recorded on Saturday, December 21, …

The planets in our Solar System correspond to a day of the week:

Monday is the Moon’s day

Tuesday belongs to Mars.

Wednesday is for Mercury.

Thursday is for Jupiter.

Friday is Venus day.

Saturday is Saturn’s.

Sunday is connected to the Sun.

What’s more, Saturn happens to rule the sign of Capricorn in Astrology, and Capricorn Season begins at Winter Solstice.

It seems fitting, then, that the upcoming Solstice, the beginning of Winter, and the start to Capricorn Season all fall on Saturn’s day.

In classical myth and pagan traditions, Saturn was famously known as, “Father Time.”

This planet acts as our cosmic reality check in the heavens above, reminding us that “time” is a form of wealth.

Time, is at once consistent, yet never guaranteed.

We can sense when time slips into the future, often marked with the grief of all that has come to pass, demanding we give life the ‘ole try once more.

This might explain why there’s always an urgent need to rush into a new year with resolutions.

And we should.

But after winter.

The thing about Saturn is that this planet is strategic. Its sobering influence reminds us that slow and steady win this race.

Capricorns are successful because they know this simple fact. The Sea Goat in Astrology instinctually knows when to act…

and when to rest.

This sign is keenly aware of how best to utilize the gift of time, taking stock of its losses while (re)strategizing a new way forward.

Thus, I invite you to rest. To take stock. To re-strategize.

And to take your time, without an urgent need to rush.

As this year winds down and we prepare for a suspenseful 2025, it might help to catch your breath, connect, and reflect.

Take your time to consider each question - this is an important assignment.

We are entering new and uncharted territory, and the past (as it has been told) cannot come with you except as a reminder of who you are now, and who you seek to become.

Be grateful for your past.

Bury the past.

Tell a new story.

As the New Moon Solar Eclipse in Libra peaks on Wednesday, October 2, alongside the south node of the Moon, we will each be invited to tell a new story about our past.

To tell the truth about our real-life experiences as individuals…

To right the wrongs of history for the sake of our humanity and for reconciliation…

This is the moment where the past meets the present.

A moment where everything we have done and known must be reckoned with (for better or for worse) in order to enter a new chapter that comes courtesy of this Dark Moon.

It won’t be easy.

Libra may be nice, amenable, and diplomatic. But this sign will fight like hell against any injustice.

This will be a very heavy week. Venus in Libra opposes Chiron in Aries on September 16. A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse peaks in the sign of Pisces on September 17, with Neptune in close proximity. Saturn in Pisces then forms an opposition to Mercury in Virgo (now direct) on September 18.

In the coming days, the Universe will be assembling its chess pieces, strongly encouraging us to release what we cannot control – for better or for worse – so that life harmony can be restored.

As Pluto wraps up its tour through the sign of Capricorn - a sign its been transiting since 2008 - we, too, are wrapping up an important 15-year-cycle, leaving behind certain aspects of our lives that once provided a sense of comfort and stability.

A New Moon peaks in the sign of Virgo on Monday, September 2, exact around 9:55 p.m. EDT. New Moons represent new chapters, and in the sign of Virgo, themes center how best to purify our minds, bodies, and spirits in preparation for a fresh start.
