With the 2025 National Podcast Post Month Challenge looming, I was unsure about whether I would do another month of podcast recording this year, but then I remembered that this is actually the easiest round of content creation that I’ve been doing since 2019 when I decided to create a whole new show. (That show became “From Duck Till Dark: Outside the Marvel Studios”) All I had to do was decide on the theme for this year’s run. I looked back at the show I created last year - “Excelsior Journeys: Behind the Scenes” - and remembered how much fun it was to reminisce about my history with audio: as an audiobook narrator, as a podcaster, and finally as the writer & director of a full-length audio drama that was performed live with a full cast, a sound effects library, and a musical score.

So if all of that was Season 1, then what would Season 2 be?

That’s when it hit me. All of this started because I’m a writer. Because of the stories I would write when I was in high school, when I would fill up one steno notebook after another and take those characters I created with my friends in grade school and further develop them to the point where I could no longer draw them. I had to tell their stories in text, not pictures. And it was this form of storytelling that made me fall in love with writing in general, and my writing took a huge leap forward when I started at Marymount Manhattan College. This was where I took classes like Playwriting, Introduction to Creative Writing, another round of Playwriting, and Writing for Television. And it was during this time that I tried screenwriting and would eventually write two feature-length screenplays, one of which was based on a one-act play I wrote in Playwriting.

My experiences in this form of writing continued past college through the next twenty-five-plus years to this year, when I would finally win awards for my writing in two different film festivals. And just like what I would say in previous episodes of Excelsior Journeys, I had my “lightning bolt moment.” I would use Season 2 to share my behind-the-scenes stories of my playwriting, teleplay writing, and screenwriting. And to paraphrase my favorite book about writing in general, I would call this season “Adventures in the Stage & Screen Trade.”

It is also with sadness that I must announce the closing of the Once Upon a Podcast Network. It was a really fun run, but there is currently no momentum to carry the network as a whole properly into 2025, so the other two founders and I decided it was best that we - for now - shelve the network and release all shows back to their creators. For those who made a point to follow the various shows we had available, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and we want to reassure you that Excelsior Journeys, Mimesis, and Unpaused Life will be continuing on as solo podcasts. Whether any of them find a connection with another network, that's entirely the decision of the hosts & producers.

Over 40 years ago, author / illustrator / animator John Celestri collaborated with a group of other animators to present a specific portion of one of the most infamous television programs of all time: The Star Wars Holiday Special. While the full special is looked at with either mocking laughter or shock / disgust, the overall opinion of the animated segment is positive, and it was John who brought to life for the very first time the character of Boba Fett. John not only talks about his experience working on this special, but on the other projects he has done, including a FundMyComic campaign that just started up this past weekend.

This week on Excelsior Journeys, host & producer George Sirois starts his month-long miniseries simply titled "You Are Not Alone." This begins with a conversation with one of the most successful collaborations in indie publishing today: authors Rebecca Jaycox & MA (Molly) Phipps. After working as an editor and a cover designer at the now-defunct Aelurus Publishing, Jaycox & Phipps decided to join forces and tell a sweeping epic paranormal young adult trilogy entitled The Origin Prophecy. Once the trilogy was complete, the two decided to take it to the next level by creating an omnibus edition and setting it up as a Kickstarter campaign. It did not take long for the campaign to become fully funded, and with just a few days left, it is less than $250 away from reaching $10,000.
