Here is a confession: despite spending my entire career working in the world of books and storytelling, I still get incredibly uncomfortable when I have to turn a camera on myself. Put me in a room to ask questions or have a deep, late-night conversation, and I’m completely at peace. But the moment I’m staring at that little glass lens on my phone, trying to pretend it’s a person? No.

So I sought out someone who I believe has mastered the art of talking to a camera as if those on the other end are in the same room. Ysabella shares book content on Instagram and displays a comfortability I hope to learn one day.

My first attempt at using Substack’s Recording Studio was with Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, author of The Disordered Cosmos and The Edge of Space-Time. I have had the privilege of collaborating with Chanda on the publication of Space-Time and have been feeling so proud to be a part of such important work.

In this conversation, I dive right into as many questions as I can get out, staying mindful that I should not keep her for more than an hour. Afterwards, I was still left riddled with many more questions, wishing I had picked this one over that one; wishing I had asked it in this way over that way; hoping I made use of the space-time she shared with me. As always, Chanda was patient with my ignorance and made sure the science she cares so deeply about was accessible for my muggle brain (and maybe yours).

For as long as I can remember, I have been navigating this life through a creative perspective. Choices were made based on feeling and instinct, what was in my gut, rather than on probability or math. This, naturally, drove my father crazy. Someone from a third-world country views creative pursuits as risky, fragile things.

“Their is no guarantee,” he’d tell me. “Become a doctor!”

Despite his efforts, I ignored him. I went to college for communications, knowing that I wanted to always be as close to storytelling as I could. When I graduated and was bringing a sad salary as an administrative assistant from a technical college, he shook his head. I always knew, however, the technical college was just a stepping stone. A way to make money while I figured out an exit strategy. It would take me about two and half years to get out, making my way to New York to pursue books.

I’ve now been in books long enough to sometimes scratch my head and wonder, should I have just become a doctor?

According to Joel Uili, the founder of The Career Archetypes, I did exactly what I was supposed to do. I followed the yellow brick road, the path less travelled, fueled by passion and purpose.

I sought Victoria Wood out because I really enjoyed the aesthetic of her Instagram feed and the variety of information she shared. There are many things about PRH that I love, but one of my favorites is a program called CoffeeChats. It’s an automated system that pairs employees across the company for 30-minute introductory calls. Before the bot sets you up with someone, you fill out a short bio with your interests, just enough information for it to match you with someone who might have similar interests. Once a pair is made, you are able to view the other person’s bio as well.

CoffeeChats is especially valuable for anyone who’s remote or outside New York, people who don’t have the luxury of roaming the halls and poking their head into random offices the way I used to. (Truly, I was a friendly menace.)

A couple of months ago, the bot matched me with Maya Ono. I quickly knew I wanted to feature her in The Write Spxt. Talking with her confirmed something I’ve sensed for years in this industry: the people who do the most impactful work are the ones who resist the noise. The ones who remember that marketing is not trickery or trend-chasing, it’s storytelling, human behavior and sincerity.

I discovered Jem Erith by accident. I was fed a collaborative post she published that included the doctors featured in this women’s health round table by The Diary of a CEO. I follow Dr. Stacy Sims because I am a fan of the work she is doing to help women like me maximize our workouts while understanding our hormonal fluctuations. I want to age with intention and learning how to work alongside my menstrual cycle has truly been life changing.

In 2018, I was working at Atria Books, an imprint at Simon & Schuster. That year, I joined Jennifer Baker, host of the Minorities in Publishing podcast, for what became my very first public conversation about representation, marketing and the realities of navigating publishing. Alongside me was Jalissa Corrie, who at the time was working in marketing and publicity at Lee & Low Books.

Listening back now, I can hear so many things I didn’t yet have the words for: the excitement, the uncertainty and the deep desire to make a difference.

Today, Jennifer Baker is the Editorial Director of Storehouse Voices at Penguin Random House, where she leads an imprint focused on commercial fiction and nonfiction for adult readers. She’s also the author of Forgive Me Not and continues to champion marginalized voices through her editorial work, teaching and public speaking.

Jalissa Corrie is now the Senior Growth Marketing Manager at the Institute of Culinary Education and and a contributing writer to A Phoenix First Must Burn.

Revisiting this moment reminds me how every step, even the uncertain ones, prepares you for where you’re going. I was 29 when this episode aired. Today, at (almost) 37, I can see how that conversation planted the seeds for The Write Spxt, a space built to keep these kinds of dialogues alive.

Today, Amanda Armstrong-Frank serves as the Senior Director of Workplace Culture & Diversity Initiatives at Simon & Schuster. But over the course of her 30-year career in book publishing, she has filled many roles, transforming many lives.

This week on The Write Spxt, I sat down with Daria Gocal, the founder of Sznurki Studio and third-place winner of the Stan Store Challenge.

Daria’s story is one of trust and tenacity: she left home alone at 19 to build a new life in Barcelona and turned crochet into a thriving business. So much so that the support her studio receives from the community landed her as top 3 in the Stan Store Challenge, beating 16K others from around the globe - including me.

Utilizing a creative obsession that started when she was in primary school, she created a space where young women in Barcelona can find connection and belonging. Her path is a reminder that there’s no single way to build a creative life. And, sometimes, the launch of an adventure may start by being out on your own. I am inspired by what she has been able to solidify for herself at just 22-years-old and I believe you will be, too.

In 2021, I was working at Gallery Books as the publishing industry faced a long-overdue reckoning. In the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the global uprisings of 2020, conversations around equity, access, and representation were finally gaining traction inside publishing houses.

Our team began exploring new ways to elevate underrepresented voices—voices that had long been sidelined. From those conversations, the Books Like Us First Novel Contest was born.

Alongside an incredible group of colleagues, I helped bring that vision to life and managed the contest directly.

In January 2022, we selected our inaugural winner: Elba Iris Pérez, for her powerful debut The Things We Didn’t Know.

This conversation with Elba is part catch-up, part creative deep dive. I’ve been cheering her on from the sidelines ever since, and I’m so glad we finally found time to talk.

We discuss her journey to publication—including the rejections, the breakthroughs, and the pressure of writing after winning. We also talk about her process, what grounds her storytelling, and why having something to say still matters more than chasing trends.
