Yury Zhivago finally makes it back to Yuryatin — ragged, half-starved and presumed dead — to the flat opposite the house of the caryatids. What he finds waiting there sets in motion the great love affair at the centre of Pasternak's novel.

In this episode of the slow read we cover the chapter titled "Opposite the House of the Caryatids" in the Hayward and Harari translation (it's "Opposite the House with Figures" in the Pevear and Volokhonsky). We follow Yury's return and Lara's letter, his weeks of fever and his recovery under Lara's care, the long shadow Komarovsky still casts over her, the hunted figure of Strelnikov, the Gajda rising, Sima Tuntseva's meditation on the Gospels, and the heartbreaking farewell letter from Tonya.

Along the way we look at the real-life parallels between Yury and Lara and Boris Pasternak's own affair with Olga Ivinskaya — drawn from Anna Pasternak's book Lara — and get into the questions the novel keeps circling: romance versus duty, and duty at what cost.

This week we're into Part 12 — the partisans, the taiga, and one of the bleakest and strangest stretches of the whole novel.The partisans' families arrive (the cattle-healer and self-proclaimed witch Kubarikha among them), last week's conspirators meet their end by the ravine, and the brotherhood finds itself besieged in the deep Siberian forest: rationing supplies, stitching coats from dogskin, and slowly coming apart. We get Pamphil's heartbreaking unravelling, Kubarikha's pagan spell over a sick cow, that gorgeous passage on the Russian folk-song as "water in a weir," and finally Yury seizing his chance to slip away into the snow.Along the way, a short detour through French and Russian history — the Communards, the Bourbons, and Ivan the Terrible's oprichniki — plus a note from Orlando Figes on just how meagre Allied aid to the Whites really was.

After a chapter away from the main cast, we're back with Yury — now a captive medic of the Forest Brotherhood partisans, almost two years into a captivity he keeps trying and failing to escape.

This is the chapter where Pasternak puts a doctor who has sworn to do no harm into a firefight, and asks what a conscience does when events stop leaving it a choice. A reader's diary written in Ukraine on the first morning of the 2022 invasion gives us the frame:

"People only do that which they can't not do."

From there: two enemy soldiers carrying the same psalm to opposite ends, Yury's argument with Liberius about whether any theory can contain life, and Pamphil Palykh — a man who has killed without flinching, undone by the one death that follows him home.

Chapter 10 is the strangest turn in the novel so far: Pasternak mislays his own protagonist. With Yury carried off by the Forest Brotherhood, the lens pulls back to take in the whole of Kolchak's Siberia — a grocer's wife fainting at Matins, frightened boys toasting a victory they don't believe in, a handful of ageing revolutionaries bickering in a photographer's shed. Zhivago himself survives only as a rumour: a famous doctor from Moscow, heard of but never seen.

In this instalment I work through the chapter section by section — the history behind Admiral Kolchak and the Whites, the Holy Week framing and the thaw, Galuzina's grief and her uneasy nostalgia, and the secret meeting where an old face from the train to the Urals resurfaces in a new political guise. As always, I compare the Hayward–Harari and Pevear–Volokhonsky translations against Pasternak's Russian, and stop on the lines where the choices really matter.

This is a long chapter—some 40 pages—covering a huge amount of ground, both literally and figuratively. The Zhivagos leave Moscow for Varykino in the Urals, travelling through a country in chaos: armed patrols, conscript wagons, blizzards, escaped prisoners, and the slow revelation that the Civil War is closing in around them.

Along the way, we meet the mysterious Strelnikov — revolutionary commander, pride and terror of the region — and Pasternak drops just enough clues for the careful reader to work out who he really is.

I also look at the Pugachev rebellion and its echoes in Russian literature, Pasternak's use of Petersburg rather than Petrograd, the Trotsky parallel, and what Italo Calvino made of Pasternak's relationship to the Revolution.

Yury returns to Moscow after two years at the front to find a city — and a country — transformed. The February Revolution has happened, and possibly the July Days too. His friends are dimmer than he remembered, his son doesn't know him, and the October Revolution is about to land on his doorstep.

In this episode I look at the dual-power struggle between the Provisional Government and the Soviets, the rise and fall of the Socialist Revolutionaries, and why a throwaway quip from the servant Markel turns out to be historically interesting. I also look at what Mayakovsky's relationship with the Revolution tells us about Pasternak's, and what it cost Pasternak personally to grit his teeth and stay in Russia while his family got out.
