Using AI to detect AI in songs 🗣️]]>In Pillar 2 of our framework for ethical AI for music, we call out that traceability is key. Knowing which source tracks went into an AI-generated song is a big part of traceability and fair use. Doing this well will be technically challenging. Identifying if a song was AI-generated or not is a good starting point. How can we tell if a song was built with artificial intelligence, or only with human intelligence?

Machine learning is commonly used for this kind of 'binary classification' (yes=AI generated, no=not AI generated). This episode is a quick look at some tools using AI / ML for detecting AI in songs, and some concerns.

This episode lists musicians who are taking AI for music into their own hands to proactively manage consent, control. credit, and compensation (the 4Cs). They include Holly Herndon, Grimes, FKA Twigs, Randy Travis, and Beanie Siegel. Natalie Cole and Paul McCartney have created songs 'with' deceased collaborators. And rights owners for deceased artists Kim Kwang-seok, Teresa Teng, and Anita Mui have created new songs 'by' them.

The ethics of generative AI for music 🗣️]]>TL;DR Just because we can generate melodies now with generative AI, that doesn’t mean we should turn these capabilities loose in the world (yet). We need to get the data and AI ethics right. As with planting a tree, the best time was 20 years ago, and the second best time is now.

Our new 8-part article series tackles one of the key questions about the use of generative AI for music: Is it ethical, for musicians (writers and performers) and for music users? 

In PARTS 1-3, we identify the PEOPLE affected by genAI music initiatives, identify key aspects of ETHICS of generative AI for music, and survey the landscape of recent PRODUCT and PLATFORM announcements and events in use of generative AI for producing and customizing musical melodies.

PARTS 4-7 are deep dives which include close looks at where the major players (e.g. OpenAI, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Adobe) and their PRODUCTS and PEOPLE stand today on 4 pillars of AI ethics. PART 8 will summarize and share recommendations.
