Discernment Isn't Optional (Many Christians Get This Wrong)

Introduction

Many Christians feel uneasy talking about discernment—sometimes it’s dismissed as judgmental or divisive. But what does scripture actually say about the importance of testing and evaluating teachings, leaders, and doctrines? In this post, we’ll explore why discernment is not only biblical but a vital sign of spiritual maturity. We’ll look at common misconceptions, biblical mandates, and practical ways to cultivate a discerning heart rooted in love and truth.

Why Christians Struggle to Embrace Discernment

It’s common for believers to shy away from discernment because of cultural pressures and misinterpretations of scripture. Many have heard the phrase “judge not,” taken out of context, and believe that any form of critique or evaluation is inherently unloving or divisive. This misunderstanding creates a false dichotomy where unity and love mean avoiding any form of test or critique. However, the Bible doesn’t forbid discernment; it commands it. The tension lies in how we practice it. As scripture repeatedly emphasizes, discernment is a mark of spiritual maturity, not cynicism or a desire to cause division. The challenge is learning to discern rightly—grounded in love and humility, rather than falling into suspicion or critical cynicism.

What Does Scripture Say About Discernment?

* Discernment Is a Biblical Command. Several key biblical passages make it clear that testing teachings, prophets, and doctrine is not optional. Jesus warns against false prophets in Matthew 7:15, saying they come in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. The apostles echo this in Acts 20:29-30, warning of savage wolves emerging from within the church. Peter and John also stress the importance of testing spirits and teachings to guard the church from deception. The consistent theme?

* Discernment is necessary. It is a command that the church must obey to protect both the truth and the flock.

* Discernment Indicates Spiritual Maturity. Hebrews 5:12-14 describes discernment as a mark of maturity: “by this time you ought to be teachers.” Mature believers have exercised their senses—meaning their spiritual faculties—so that they can distinguish good from evil, truth from error. This posture reflects growth through training and disciplined study of scripture.

* Discernment Is Rooted in Love, Not Cynicism. True biblical discernment isn’t about skepticism or suspicion of everyone and everything. Instead, it’s an evaluation process—recognizing truth from error—done in love. Paul emphasizes this in 1 Corinthians 13: loving discernment involves humility and patience, not harshness or arrogance.

* Recognizing the Difference: Discernment vs. Cynicism. Cynicism often leads to dismissing everything as corrupt, leading to isolation. Discernment, on the other hand, rests on the belief that truth exists, and the church has means—scripture, membership, wise leadership—to identify and correct error. It’s confident and rooted in the promise that Christ’s church will prevail, and error can be confronted lovingly and wisely.

Practical Ways to Cultivate Biblical Discernment

1. Know Your Scripture Deeply. Hebrews 4:12 describes God’s word as living and active—able to evaluate and divide truth from error. The foundation of discernment is a thorough knowledge of scripture. The Bereans in Acts 17 examined Paul’s teachings daily, testing everything against the Bible. Regular, deep study of the Bible equips believers to recognize false teaching and stand firm in the truth.

2. Learn and Trust in the Historic Faith. The early church wrestled with heresies like Gnosticism and Arianism, developing creeds and doctrines to safeguard the faith. Studying these historic doctrines and creeds helps believers build guardrails that keep theology anchored in biblical orthodoxy. It’s not about innovation but about holding to the “faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).

3. Practice Discernment in Community. Discernment is communal. It involves life-on-life discipleship, accountability, and open dialogue. Churches that foster environments of love, humility, and grace create space for members to ask questions, challenge false teachings, and grow together. Evaluate teachings collectively, asking whether they align with scripture, elevate Christ, and faithfully present the gospel.

4. Evaluate Teachings Consistently. Ask simple questions about every teaching or doctrine you encounter:

* Does this align with scripture?

* Does it elevate Christ?

* Does it faithfully represent the gospel?

If the answer is yes, it’s worth considering. If not, it’s a sign to proceed cautiously or reject outright. Continuous evaluation protects believers and helps prevent deception.

The Heart of Biblical Discernment: Love in Action

Some see discernment as contrary to love, but scripture teaches the opposite. Discernment is an expression of love—love for Christ, love for the gospel, love for the church, and love for vulnerable people. As Paul exhorts in Ephesians 4:14-15, we should no longer be tossed by every wind of doctrine but speak the truth in love, growing into Christ. Discerning truth and confronting error, when done in love, guards the church and protects the sheep. It’s not about tearing down or dividing but about building up the body in truth.

Learning from Church History: Discernment as a Protector of the Faith

Throughout church history, discernment has played a crucial role in preserving biblical doctrine and fighting heresies. Early councils, creeds, and confessions emerged precisely because believers sought to uphold orthodoxy against false teachings. Without discernment, the faith could have been corrupted or lost. Christians today stand on the shoulders of saints and church fathers who valued biblical truth enough to challenge and confront error—even at great personal cost. Recognizing this legacy grounds us in the importance of discernment as a duty rooted in love and faithfulness.

Conclusion

Discernment is not an enemy of love; it is a vital expression of love—love for Jesus, His gospel, and His church. It keeps us rooted in truth while guiding us to confront error with humility and grace. As Paul modeled, speaking the truth in love protects the flock and helps believers grow into maturity. Ultimately, biblical discernment enables us to stand firm on a solid foundation, guarding against false teachings and remaining faithful to the historic faith once delivered. It’s a spiritual discipline that, when practiced rightly, leads to spiritual growth, stability, and greater love for the Truth.

This is a public episode.
