Stardate 03/22/2025.

I’ve spent over two decades navigating the strange nebula of the modern classroom—charting a course through Shakespeare and syntax, through epic poems and quiet self-doubt.

I’ve taught in public schools and classical academies, on military bases and border towns.

And through it all, I’ve learned one truth: Teaching is not a performance.

It’s a battle of the mind.

And the classroom… is an arena.

In ancient Greece, they called it the agon—the contest, the struggle, the proving ground.

And in every great story, there’s a protagonist—the central character, the one who seeks, who strives, who changes. In my classroom, that protagonist is the student.

But no story is complete without an antagonist—not just a villain, but the force that resists the hero’s growth. In learning, that antagonist isn’t me.

It’s not the test.

It’s the inner voice that whispers, “You’re not smart enough.”

The real enemy is fear. Laziness. The lure of apathy.

And then, there’s the contagonist—a lesser-known term from narrative theory.

The contagonist isn’t the villain, but a complicating force.

The cynic in the back row.

The class clown.

Even the distractions buzzing in our pockets. Not evil—just in the way.

My role? I’m not the hero.

I’m the mentor.

Like Gandalf.

Like Yoda.

Like Picard.

I don’t hand out answers—I arm students with questions. I light the path, but they walk it.

Here at Captain’s Log, I bring that same spirit to every lesson, every video, every blog post.

Because education isn’t just about what we know. It’s about who we’re becoming.

On this channel, you’ll find the tools to build brave thinkers:

Tutorials that break down the most essential knowledge and skills, one standard at a time.

Test strategy bootcamps that sharpen reading and writing like a blade.

Content designed to give second-language learners the confidence to speak with power.

Read-alouds that bring literature to life—with commentary to guide meaning.

Socratic Seminars that model how to wrestle with texts, not just recite them.

And reflections for teachers and homeschoolers—because this journey is yours, too.

So whether you’re a student, a teacher, a parent, or a lifelong learner—welcome aboard.

Subscribe.

Share.

Follow the log.

And step into the arena with us.

Because the most worthy opponent you’ll ever face—is yourself.

Captain out.

Get full access to Captain's Log at andrewrkeatingmamednbct.substack.com/subscribe

Andrew R.
