Mark is the current head coach of the Australian men’s team, affectionately known as the Kookaburras, and a legendary former striker and captain for Australia, who led his team to a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Over the course of a decades-spanning career, Mark has not only competed at the sport’s highest levels but has also shaped teams worldwide with his coaching prowess. Prior to his current role, Mark steered the New Zealand and Great Britain women’s teams to remarkable heights—including an Olympic bronze with GB at Tokyo 2020.

Studio.Hockey is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support our work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Ernst opens the conversation by asking Mark where he is as the interview takes place. Mark offers a personal glimpse into his life away from the pitch, explaining that he’s joining from Dunsborough, a peaceful beach town a couple of hours outside Perth. As he puts it, Dunsborough is his “home away from home,” a place to both reflect and disconnect from the relentless world of high-performance hockey. This setting sets a tone for the episode, highlighting the humanity and balance Mark tries to bring to his career and personal life.

Transitioning from Women’s to Men’s Hockey

Jaspreet starts the hockey discussion by delving into Mark’s recent transition, from decades coaching women’s international teams to heading the men’s Kookaburras. Mark is candid about the unique challenges involved. He notes that while many structural aspects remain similar between men’s and women’s hockey, the men’s game features more one-on-one duels and relies heavily on aerial balls to break down defenses. “In the men’s game I find it’s a little bit more man to man...the aerial ball is very productive,” Mark observes, hinting at the constant tactical adaptations a top-level coach must make. Yet, Mark embraces these differences, saying, “It’s been the biggest challenge for me this year…now I feel I’m in a good position to understand the men’s game a lot more.”

Coaching the Next Generation: Then vs. Now

Ernst probes how Mark’s approach to coaching young athletes has evolved through the generations. Mark reflects on the drastic changes:

“When I first came through as a coach or a player, it was very much: do as you’re told, get out there, run hard.”

But today’s athletes seek understanding and want to be part of the process. Video analysis plays a far greater role, and the focus is more on encouragement and highlighting players’ strengths.

“We still talk about the development areas, but focus more on their strengths and what they bring to the team,” he explains.

This shift towards empathy and athlete empowerment marks a significant evolution in coaching philosophy.

Adapting to Change: Is Empathy Inherent or Learned?

Following up, Ernst asks whether this new approach comes naturally to Mark, or if it has required a conscious effort to change. Mark admits this evolution didn’t come easily. “Definitely, no, it’s definitely been a challenge,” he says, recalling his early coaching days with New Zealand where he leaned heavily on hard-edged direction. “When I went to Great Britain, I had to adapt,” Mark adds.

The presence of strong assistant coaches in GB helped him step back and adopt more of a “relationship coach” style. He shared, “It also helped because I had two really good assistant coaches…so I could step back and become more of a, I suppose, a relationship coach. So I could get to know the players more, give them more empathy.” The support of a broader coaching staff allowed him to avoid always being the ‘bad guy,’ and offered a more holistic means of supporting his athletes.

Returning to Australia: Was Head Coach Always the Plan?

Shifting gears, Jaspreet inquires whether becoming head coach of the Kookaburras was always in Mark’s plans upon his return to Australia in 2021. Mark responds with humility, saying he didn’t anticipate jumping back into such a high-profile job so soon, instead prioritizing family after years abroad. “I hadn’t seen my family for three years so I really wanted to spend time with them,” he confides. When the coaching role opened up, supportive words from his wife reignited his ambitions, but Mark felt more balanced and at peace with whichever way the process played out. Now, he finds satisfaction in blending his experiences from Great Britain and New Zealand into his work with Australia, highlighting the value of empathy and consultation:

“Don’t be afraid to admit if I don’t know anything or if I’m not sure, you know, ask the players.”

First Lessons with the Kookaburras: The Pro League Experience

Ernst draws attention to Mark’s first major stint with the Australian men—Pro League games marked by both triumph and learning curves. Due to player commitments in the Indian Hockey League, Mark was ‘forced’ to field several debutants. Instead of a setback, he calls it a “fantastic opportunity for those young players,” appreciating their fearless and unencumbered approach to the game. “Some of those performances…really opened my eyes about how youth can really excite a team.” Mark acknowledges that, without this circumstance, he may have defaulted only to senior players, and this experiment has positively influenced his squad-building philosophy.

The Future of the Debutants: World Cup Hopes

Picking up the thread, Jaspreet questions whether any of these eight debutants have impressed Mark enough to be part of Australia’s World Cup squad. Mark is optimistic yet measured in his response. “There’s a little bit of hockey to go yet,” he says, citing the upcoming Indian League and the Pro League as continued proving grounds. He strikes a balance between development and letting players express themselves, wishing to avoid over-coaching:

“We really want them to play with flair and give them a lot of freedom and I think that’s worked really well for a lot of our young players this year.”

Oceania Cup: Should Asia and Oceania Merge for Hockey?

After Australia’s recent Oceania Cup win, Ernst floats a provocative idea: merging the Oceania and Asia Cups for increased competition. Mark is receptive, recalling the positive experience as a junior playing in hybrid Asia-Oceania qualifiers, and praises the diversity and level of challenge such events brought: “It was a great, it was a fantastic tournament, a really good tournament.” However, he’s realistic about the current lack of multi-team tournaments, and the removal of the Commonwealth Games highlights this challenge further:

“We have to try and find tournaments because we don’t play tournaments now…if we don’t join with Asia, then Oceania and Asia have got to start playing tournaments against each other anyway.”

Should the Champions Trophy Return?

Jaspreet laments the lack of regular multi-nation tournaments, asking Mark if the famed Champions Trophy should return. There’s a wave of nostalgia, with Mark and Ernst both fondly recalling the tournament’s prestige and excitement. “I loved it. We all did,” Mark affirms, while noting that financial difficulties make such competitions challenging. He’s pragmatic: “The Pro League has its plus and minuses. It gets hockey around the world...but, oh look, yeah, I loved playing the Champions Trophy.” Still, Mark expresses hope for a revival of similar tournament formats, noting the invaluable experience they offer.

Coaching: Europe vs the countries from Down Under

Jaspreet asks Mark what differences he experienced coaching a European team compared to Australian or New Zealand squads. Mark downplays drastic differences, emphasizing the universality of his coaching philosophy: “I try and impose my style...attacking, aggressive hockey.” He appreciates that Great Britain and England were receptive to attacking play, and though some early results were tough, he stuck to his guns and challenged his team to bolster their defense to match their offensive flair.

Hockey Australia’s Pathway Program: Insights and Value

Ernst notes that Mark, during his supposed ‘break’ from international coaching, was serving as tactical lead for Hockey Australia’s pathways program. Mark explains this gave him much-needed insight into how Australian hockey now operates and allowed him to work closely with figures like Mark Knowles. “…he had the enthusiasm, the youngness...had different ideas how the men were playing. We could talk about the players who were coming through, what skills we wanted to develop.” He highlights the program’s role in monitoring youth development and the promising talent pipeline emerging in Australia, referencing a quote:

“When you lose, it’s learning. It’s not losing.”

Hockey One League: Australia’s Domestic Competition

Jaspreet turns to the Australia’s premier domestic competition—the Hockey One League—asking about its evolution and impact. Mark sees clear positives in the league’s growth and the move towards a franchise model, increasing opportunities for players to play for different clubs, and inviting overseas talent. But there’s a downside: a limited number of playing and travel spots each week means some promising juniors miss out on top-level game experience. “That would be the only downfall, I think, just the number of players that can play each weekend,” Mark asserts, but he is hopeful for ongoing improvements.

A Personal Anecdote: The Story of Mark’s Thumb

Adding a personal touch, Ernst recounts a quirky story he heard from Australian hockey circles: Mark is missing half a thumb. Mark confirms it’s true—but rather than a harrowing pitch accident, it happened in a factory when he was younger. With trademark humor, he says,

“I thought at the time that was the end of my hockey career, but…I was fortunate. It was above my knuckle so I could still hold a hockey stick… I saw it as an advantage because it couldn’t get hit.”

Planning for the 2026 World Cup

As the conversation draws towards the future, Jaspreet focuses on the upcoming 2026 Men’s World Cup. Australia’s missed podium finish in 2023 was their first such in over two decades. Mark acknowledges the challenge ahead, emphasizing a dual focus on developing the young squad’s international experience and fostering a culture of belief and resilience: “We also…have a training block next year from pretty much from start of January up to the World Cup where most of us are based in Perth…That’s a real advantage for our program.” Psychologically, he wants to instill the lesson that a single bad day can derail a tournament, so scenario-based training and mental conditioning are key. His approach melds strategic preparation with an emphasis on maintaining Australia’s signature attacking, aggressive style: “We want to play our game…We don’t want to change that style.”

Parting Words and Reflections

The episode closes with a personal note, as the hosts check in on the health of Mark’s brother-in-law, fellow hockey coach Michael Nobbs, who played a role in arranging the interview. Mark shares that Michael is undergoing treatment but remains in good spirits, and the hosts extend their well wishes. In a lighter moment, they recall Michael’s daughter banning him from coaching her—reminding all coaches to let their kids simply enjoy being kids.

This episode of Studio Hockey offered a rich, multifaceted conversation with Mark Hager—a coach who embodies both tradition and transformation within the ever-evolving sport of field hockey. From tactical insights and generational shifts in coaching, to stories of resilience, ongoing challenges, and a clear-eyed vision for the future, Mark’s experience provides valuable lessons for hockey enthusiasts around the globe.

We hope you enjoyed this episode of Studio Hockey, a podcast about international and domestic field hockey. Not just for India, who marched undefeated to the title and claimed their ticket to the 2026 World Cup, but also for Asian hockey as a whole.

In our Final Impressions episode, Jaspreet Singh took our listeners on a vivid journey—through the venue, the city’s historic atmosphere, sweltering conditions, team performances, and a revealing interview with Indian coach Craig Fulton.

Studio.Hockey is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support our work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

A Historic City Hosts a Modern Tournament

First impressions matter, and for me, the journey to Rajgir from the airport was eye-opening, setting the tone for a tournament nestled in a city where ancient history meets contemporary ambition. Upon entering the city’s outskirts, visitors are greeted by “mountains, a beautiful skyline, and all that.” Rajgir, etched in Buddhist history, sits just 70 kilometers from Bodhgaya, the site of Lord Buddha’s enlightenment. The venue itself—the sprawling Rajgir Sports Complex—spans 90 acres and houses top-tier facilities for 22 sports, including world-class hockey, cricket, football, and athletics pitches.

Yet we have to ask the essential question: can Rajgir not only host great tournaments but also produce world-class athletes? It’s a multi-million rupee investment that hinges on more than architecture; it needs talent development and consistent nurturing of athletes. For now, the Asia Cup was a huge test—and by most measures, a triumph in staging.

History, Heat, Humidity: the Three H’s of Rajgir

Every tournament has its unique challenges, but for Jaspreet and all who attended, the Rajgir summer was unforgiving. “Heat and humidity were killing,” Jaspreet admits, not just for players, but for officials, spectators, and the media pack. He cleverly frames Rajgir’s experience as the “three H’s”: history, heat, and humidity.

The toll on athletes was clear. Teams scrambled for coping strategies. The Korean squad shut off all the air conditioning in their hotel rooms to acclimatize. Bangladeshis guzzled coconut water, while Japanese warm-up before games was shortened to conserve player energy. With matches scheduled from morning (9am) through to the hottest part of the day (3pm), the first week was especially brutal.

A Rough Start, a Triumphant Finish: India’s Journey

India came into the tournament under pressure. The Asia Cup isn’t just about continental bragging rights—World Cup qualification was on the line, and Jaspreet captures the collective sigh of relief when he says, “The monkey’s off the back”—no need for India to play stressful qualifiers next year.

But the home team didn’t have it easy to start: “India played their first two matches which were 3pm starts, and it showed that they were struggling in the heat… barely able to beat China… and then Japan.” Here, Jaspreet singles out Harmanpreet Singh, the captain, as the hero of those challenging matches, netting five goals across the two openers—“goals that led to victory and helped India qualify for the Super Fours.

“Without Harmanpreet’s hat-trick against China and his brace versus Japan, India may have struggled.”

As scheduling came into favor—the Super Four matches moved to cooler 7:30pm slots—India found their rhythm. “Once they came into the Super Fours, it was a different team… They started to play like the dominating force they are in Asia.” Standout performers included Sukhjeet, praised for off-the-ball running, scoring skills and consistent performances, especially in the business end of the tournament.

Yet, Jaspreet doesn’t shy away from pointing out weaknesses; India’s finishing, particularly in a 2-2 draw with Korea, was suspect. “The attacking intent was there, but the last touch [for goals] was missing.” Still, emphatic wins—like the 4-1 victory over Malaysia and hammering China 7-0—proved India’s eventual superiority. For Jaspreet, these late-tournament flourishes were a validation of India’s preparation, depth, and mental strength to peak when it matters.

A New Landscape: The Asian Hockey Rivalries

It wouldn’t be Studio Hockey without a look at the broader regional trends. According to Jaspreet, this year’s Asia Cup saw the emergence of China as a truly promising side—young, energetic, and well-drilled under Dutch coach Michel van den Heuvel. Jaspreet quotes the assistant coach, Oltmans, expressing hopes for China to break into the LA 2028 Olympics and beyond. While they were thrashed 7-0 by India, Jaspreet believes

“China can take a lot of positives from this tournament.”

Korea, despite not defending their title, showed resilience—drawing India and riding their defensive discipline all the way to the final. Malaysia, however, endured heartbreak, losing a crucial 3-4 Super Fours clash with Korea after leading 3-1—a collapse reminiscent of their recent trend of letting big matches slip away, as Jaspreet reminds us of their Asian Games final loss to Japan after a similar lead.

Japan, while once champions at the 2018 Asian Games, now appear “just about there”—competitive, but lacking the sharpness and consistency to make a real statement.

The changing of the guard is evident: “China is coming up… under Michel van den Heuvel and their coaching staff they will do a lot better…

Japan hasn’t made much of a noise since 2018… and Malaysia needs to work on seeing games out.” The rest of Asia, as Jaspreet maintains, still has work to do to challenge the continental kings.

Tournament Logistics: Venue and Schedule Debates

No modern tournament escapes scrutiny over scheduling and logistics, and this Asia Cup was no different. The absence of Pakistan—due to political tensions—and Oman (who withdrew due to financial constraints) left two vacant slots filled by Bangladesh and Kazakhstan. But perhaps the greatest challenge was the packed schedule: Seven matches in ten days for each finalist, a gauntlet deemed “very taxing” by experts and coaches alike.

Dutchman Michel van den Heuvel’s comments, as relayed by Jaspreet, stirred debate: He opined that Asia’s hockey progress risks stagnation if “all the things keep coming back to India”

That is, if India hosts the lion’s share of continental tournaments. Jaspreet counters with a broader perspective: the last Asian Champions Trophy edition was held in China and before that the Junior World Cup in Malaysia.

However, when it comes to scheduling, Jaspreet concedes there’s work to be done. Van den Heuvel’s comparison to the Euro Hockey Championships—where teams enjoy more rest days between matches—casts light on the need for improved player welfare and more world-class tournament management, not just infrastructure.

The Importance of Early Qualification: Interview with Craig Fulton

One of the episode’s highlights comes in a dedicated segment with Indian head coach Craig Fulton, whose calm and pragmatic approach underpins the team’s steady progress. For Fulton, clinching the World Cup ticket at home was not just a relief, but a major strategic win:

“It’s quite a busy run-in… Azlan Shah, trip to South Africa, Hockey India League, then Pro League—if you had to add another qualifier on top of that, it would be really difficult. So I’m glad we stayed away from that.”

This is a major point Jaspreet also emphasizes: Securing qualification early allows the Indian team not only more time to prepare for the World Cup proper, but also the “leeway to try different things out… because they don’t have to go through qualifiers. They know they are there.”

Fulton goes further, lauding the team’s ability to overcome adversity:

“Seven games in ten days is no easy feat. We did really, really well. Even though the first two games were a little bit [shaky], as we acclimatized, we got stronger and stronger. Last night (7-0 vs China) and tonight (beating Korea 4-1 in the final) showed what we can do.”

Jaspreet presses Fulton about squad plans for upcoming tournaments—will they go full strength? Fulton keeps cards close to his chest: “We’ll see what state we’re in and what we need to achieve next year with the group we have”. But there’s no hiding his satisfaction, both at ticking off the primary objective and at India’s ability to peak when it mattered.

Looking Ahead: The State and Future of Asian Hockey

As Jaspreet wraps up his reflections, he returns to the central question: Where does Asian hockey stand now?

India’s dominance remains, while China’s rise, the resilience of Korea, Malaysia’s need for psychological strengthening, and Japan’s stagnation all define this year’s storylines. With the World Cup spot settled, the challenge now is for the chasing pack to close the gap.

For teams finishing behind India—Korea, Malaysia, China, Japan, and Bangladesh—a grueling path to World Cup qualification awaits via playoffs and qualifiers, a reminder of how high the stakes are in Asian hockey and how quickly fortunes can change.

Why This Asia Cup Mattered

Jaspreet’s on-the-ground observations from Rajgir are a reminder of how much the “context” matters in sport—the venue’s ambition, the city’s rich history, the elements (both environmental and competitive), and the logistical realities all combine to shape results and future planning. The 2025 Asia Cup offered both challenges and inspiration in equal measure.

Will Rajgir’s 90-acre sports complex become a production line of international athletes? Will the lessons in dealing with heat and humidity translate to better-prepared teams at future tournaments? Will China’s promise be realized, and can Malaysia find their killer instinct?

One thing’s for sure: India’s undoubted success in Asia sets the stage for a fascinating World Cup campaign.

Thanks for joining us for this recap of Studio Hockey’s Asia Cup coverage. On the domestic level, Arthur currently plays club hockey for Oranje Rood in the Dutch Hoofdklasse and recently featured in the reinvigorated Hockey India League for the Hyderabad Toofans.

With hockey woven deeply into his family’s roots and rich career experiences bridging Belgium, the Netherlands, and India, Arthur brings a nuanced perspective on modern hockey’s evolution. This conversation delves into his journey, Belgium’s rise, balancing hockey with life off the field, and the state of the global game.

Thanks for reading! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

Family, Upbringing and Hockey DNA

Ernst kicks off by highlighting Arthur’s hockey lineage and asks about his early beginnings and family connection to the sport.

Arthur warmly recalls, “Honestly, I started playing hockey since I was born. My whole family plays hockey… My grandfather played hockey, my mother and her brother played hockey as well. I just followed my parents to the hockey field from the beginning.”

Notably, he shares how even his niece now wears Belgian colors on the national women’s team—a testament to the family’s enduring love for the sport. For Arthur, this generational connection laid the foundation for his achievements.

A Glittering Career—and What Comes Next

Jaspreet turns to Arthur’s stacked trophy cabinet, acknowledging his Olympic and World Cup successes, and wonders: what’s left on the checklist?

Arthur’s answer is refreshingly candid. While proud of his past, he admits,

“If you look now at the last four or five years, I haven't won anything internationally or nationally… I’m starting to be a bit impatient now to go back for the gold medals.”

He draws motivation from Belgium’s youthful next generation, eager to relive and surpass the “nice things we did in the past.” The hunger for new titles is undiminished.

Defense, Role Models, and the Modern Game

Ernst, always keen on stats, celebrates Arthur’s on-field impact—the Red Lions’ win rate with him playing stands at a commanding two-thirds. Rather than ask Arthur to boast, Ernst asks which defenders Arthur admires today.

Arthur singles out his longtime defensive partner, Arthur Van Doren: “He has shown and is still showing that he's the best one for already a long time… I've learned a lot from him.” Beyond Van Doren, he’s diplomatic: “It's such a broad spectrum… there’s not one player that has everything; every player has his own qualities.” He recognizes the evolution of defense as more crucial than ever, reflecting on recent low-scoring finals and sharing,

“You see that the defensive part of hockey has become more and more important.”

Belgium’s Rise—Keys to Sustained Success

Jaspreet moves into the heart of Belgium’s golden era, tracing roots back to 2016 and asking Arthur what he attributes this sustained success to.

Arthur looks at the long arc of history, especially from the Beijing Olympics (2008) onward, crediting years of behind-the-scenes development: “It has been a big work from a lot of people behind the scenes… not one aspect.” He identifies coach Shane McLeod as a catalyst, describing his arrival before Rio 2016 as “one of the last puzzle pieces,” helping Belgium transform from “a really good team to being the best in the world.” Access to strong infrastructure and coaching from youth up characterized Belgium’s ascent—and now, with new faces coming in, “the structure… is so good that I hope we can still play at the top level for a number of years to come.”

Balancing Hockey, Academics, and Real Life

Ernst rightly notes that hockey doesn’t offer football-sized riches, making life beyond the pitch an inevitable balancing act for players. He asks Arthur about juggling sport and life off the field.

Arthur is pragmatic and grounded: “It was important for me to have something besides [hockey]… I have done business economics studies in Antwerp.” He now works part-time for a private bank during lighter hockey periods—a way to “stay fresh when I play hockey.” Arthur emphasizes the importance of having more than one identity: “I really need that balance to also be busy next to hockey.” Some of his teammates focus solely on sport during their playing years, but for Arthur, a dual path keeps things sustainable.

Hockey India League: A New Experience

Picking up on Arthur’s recent stint with Hyderabad Toofans, Jaspreet probes what he took away from the return of the Hockey India League, particularly the level of India’s talent.

Arthur was impressed and respectful, calling the one-month adventure “very eye opening.” He admits: “I was quite surprised with the level of the Indian players... I was quite impressed with the level and understanding of the game.” The drive he witnessed was inspiring:

“For the Indian players, it’s such an important part of their life… it can literally change their life.”

He came away with deep respect for Indian hockey’s passion and commitment.

India’s Pro League Struggles: Perspective from the Opposition

Turning to international competition, Jaspreet asks Arthur why India underperformed in a recent Pro League European tour, losing seven of eight matches—even one to Belgium.

Arthur resists simple conclusions:

“I don't think they played badly. India is always going to be a tough opponent for every country… Their games were all close calls.”

He highlights key absences, like captain Harmanpreet’s temporary injury, as significant factors, along with logistical challenges. Arthur again sees the big picture: the Indian squad is in partial rebuilding after Paris 2024, with the Pro League as a development stage before the next World Cup. “I know the coach, Craig Fulton… he’s also looking at the bigger picture and not only at the results of today.”

The Sreejesh Effect: Transition in India’s Goalkeeping

Jaspreet next brings up Sreejesh’s retirement and its impact, referencing the legendary Indian goalie’s role in safeguarding numerous victories.

Arthur clearly rates Sreejesh highly: “Not only Sreejesh was a great goalie and a good shot stopper, but he probably also gave a lot of confidence to the team and to the defense in front of him with his experience.” He acknowledges that filling Sreejesh’s spot will take time, and urges patience: “You have to give those goalies games and experience… so they can gain the experience they need for the big tournaments.”

Looking to the European Championships—Belgium’s Squad

Ernst moves the conversation to the EuroHockey Championships, for which Arthur and the Belgian squad are currently preparing. He asks how Arthur rates the new, younger team announced for the tournament.

Arthur is enthusiastically optimistic:

“We have, if I'm not mistaken, five players that play their first big tournament... I have to say I'm very excited about the tournament coming up.”

He’s realistic about expectations—“we’re not the favorite to win the tournament”—but energized by the rapid progress shown by the youth, “We could potentially be a big surprise this tournament. So I'm really looking forward to see the young guys performing well.”

Acknowledging the surprise selection of Loic Van Doren as first-choice goalie, Ernst asks if Arthur was surprised by the non-selection of Vincent Vanasch and what this means for the team.

Arthur calls it “not a surprise for the team,” noting Van Doren’s world-class credentials: “It’s a luxury problem... Loic would be first goalie in a lot of other countries in the world.” He stresses team support for both goalkeepers, and promises the squad has faith in Van Doren for the Euros: “We all support him, we're all behind him and we know that he will also have an important role in our team for these Euros.”

Ernst references newcomer Lucas Balthazar, a young player from a smaller club, noting his rapid rise to the senior squad.

Arthur is very complimentary: “He has made huge steps... If you’re selected at this young age, it shows that you have something special.” What stands out for Arthur is Lucas’s maturity and mentality: “At the age he has and the way he plays, he has a very mature way of playing already.” Selection is no mere experiment—Lucas “really showed during a lot of months that he deserved his spot.”

Where Should Big Tournaments Go? A Question from Joep de Mol

Joep de Mol, Arthur’s club teammate at Oranje Rood in the Dutch Hoofdklasse, poses a thoughtful question via video:

Should hockey’s big tournaments rotate more across new venues, rather than recurring in the same cities and countries?

Arthur agrees wholeheartedly: “If you always organize the tournaments at the same place, you don't reach enough people.” He points to positive recent examples, like the Olympic qualifiers in Oman, and suggests North America as another untapped market. “If we want to give the sport more leverage in the world, we should let it happen at more places than only the same stadiums in India or in Holland.”

Should the Men’s and Women’s World Cups Be Held Together?

Jaspreet wonders if hosting men’s and women’s World Cups simultaneously increases or undermines attention for each event.

Arthur is honest about the complexity: “I think statistically there's always been more interest in men's sports than women's sports. So maybe people of women's sports will like it to be held at the same moment.” Arthur sums up: “For international hockey, I would say it's better taking place at the same time because you can… make it a bigger event. You can probably do a lot of marketing around it.”

Asian Hockey Threats: Who’s Dangerous for India?

Ahead of the Asian continental qualifier, Jaspreet asks Arthur which Asian teams are most likely to challenge India for the World Cup qualifying spot.

Arthur names two: “Pakistan is always going to be a tough opponent, especially for India,” citing the rivalry and stylistic familiarity.

“China, I'm very curious what they will show in the years to come because the women have showed a lot of quality… I would imagine that the men will also want or have gained a lot of trust from that.”

Malaysia and South Korea are noted as inconsistent presences, leaving Pakistan and China as potential disruptors.

Conclusion and Recap

As practice knocks them back to reality at Arthur’s hotel in Germany - at the moment of recording Arthur was in Krefeld where the Belgians were playing some practice games ahead of the European Championships, we came to a close.

Arthur is excited to get to the real stuff at the EC, energized by his young teammates from the Belgian team and the prospect of new challenges.

“I’m very excited… We could potentially be a big surprise this tournament.”

We hope you enjoyed this in-depth episode of Studio Hockey, your go-to podcast for all things international and domestic field hockey. In this session, we gathered global coaching talent to explore a topic which, still today, is a sensitive one: the underrepresentation of female coaches at the elite levels of our sport.

Meet the Panel & Today’s Big Topic

At the heart of this episode is Joy Jouret, a Belgian coach of impressive breadth—former national player, coach of youth and senior teams (both men’s and women’s sides at the highest level), and now a scholar finishing a master’s degree in psychology with a thesis that zeroes in on gender representation in coaching. With Joy leading the way, our roundtable also featured Katrina Powell (head coach, Australian women’s national team), Janneke Schopman (ex-USA, India, and now Germany women’s national coach), and Veronica Scott (director of hockey at Colorado Academy, seasoned player and coach on three continents). I, Ernst Baart, did my best to stir the discussion and (mostly) stay out of their way.

This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Top Talking Points from the Workshop

* The Current (Stagnant) Landscape Joy gave us a data-driven reality check: despite decades of progress in female participation, coaching numbers are stuck—globally, female coaches are just 20% across all sports, and only 10-15% at high performance. This isn’t trending upwards. And we’re not just talking field hockey.

* Structural, Systemic, and Perception Barriers The panel dug into the “eco-system” of obstacles—individual, interpersonal, organisational, and societal. Want a diagram? Joy’s research has one—it looks a bit like lasagne, and it’s not always appetising.

* Stereotyping and Self-Belief We all laughed and shook our heads at familiar stories—players who’d only ever been coached by men, sometimes preferring it simply because it’s what they’re used to. Katrina nailed it: “If you can’t see it, you can’t be it.” The psychological overlay—imposter syndrome, tokenism, stereotype threat—was unpacked in detail, and yes, that stuff is alive and well.

* The Glass Ceiling, Rubber Walls, and Missed Opportunities Janneke recounted her own dance with the “rubber wall”—loaded with qualifications and experience, only to bounce off invisible barriers. Top jobs going unadvertised or un-interviewed? We don’t mince words.

* Cultural Differences: US vs. Europe/Australia/India Veronica and Janneke reflected on the upside-down world of US college hockey, where female coaches are (in some cases) favoured, but rarely seen in men’s programs. In India or Europe, the problem is compounded by economic and cultural factors, not just gender.

* Mentorship (the Real Pipeline) Call it what you like—giving back, helping the next wave, or just staying connected. Every panelist highlighted the power of informal and formal mentorship (and admitted they’re doing their bit, whether it’s baked into their job or just an open WhatsApp line).

* Work-Life Realities Flexible scheduling, childcare, and transparent pay—these are not “nice to haves.” Katrina and Veronica pointed out that clubs, schools, and associations need to start with the coach’s reality, not just their own spreadsheet.

* What National Bodies and FIH Should (Actually) Do There were calls (cheers, even) for more transparency in recruitment, real equality in salaries, and proper accountability for federations—especially those using government funding. Joy challenged the need for gender equity “labels” and for financial incentives tied to inclusion and diversity.

* Moving Players into Coaching Whether it’s about instilling self-belief or showing clear pathways (and internships), getting high-level players—women in particular—to make the jump into coaching is still a nut to be cracked.

* The Final Nudge: “Just Do It” From every angle, the message was clear: take the leap. As Joy summed it up: “You’re not a guest in hockey—you belong here.” Katrina added, “Jump in with both feet and have a go. And don’t be afraid to network.”

Quote to Go

Joy on bringing your whole self to the game:“We all have superpowers as human beings. Believe in yourself enough and your competencies—bring something really special and unique. It’s not linked to your gender. It’s linked to who you are.”

In Summary – What We Learned

This wasn’t a seminar about blaming the system or giving empty pep talks. Instead, our guests mapped out the real world we’re coaching in—from conscious and unconscious bias to genuine opportunities and the importance of allyship. We were reminded that diverse teams (on the field and in coaching boxes) make for stronger hockey—and that, while there are deep obstacles, there’s also cause for optimism and plenty of practical ideas to act on.

Ready to Take Action?

If this recap hit the mark, or if you want the full, unfiltered conversation—panelists, anecdotes, research, and all—make sure to check out the full panel talk on demand. Bring your coffee (or something stronger), this is a conversation every field hockey coach should be part of.

Let’s keep the conversation going. Much to the surprise (again) of most involved. When we talked to players, coaches, high performance directors and other relevant experts most were and are very sceptical. I think all of us agree it is the way forward. Water is a scarce resource and we need to find a solution. But if the timeline for this is a unilateral decision made by administrators, without involving relevant stakeholders, we imagine it could be problematic. So we invited some experts for an open and transparent panel talk about the move towards dry artificial grass for hockey.

In February of 2023 these experts joined me in a panel talk about the move towards a non-irrigated surface for hockey. Listen to the podcast here or watch it on Spotify or Youtube where you’ll find the full and unedited video of this panel talk. Our panel featured the following experts:

Jeroen Hertzberger 🇳🇱, international player

Adam Commens 🇦🇺 🇧🇪, former international player & coach – now high performance director for Hockey Belgium

Stephen Butler 🇮🇪, former international player & co-founder Osaka (stick & shoe brand)

Colin Young 🇬🇧, global R&D director for Tencate Grass

Alastair Cox 🇬🇧, Facilities & Quality Programme Manager for the FIH

Listen (or watch) it here and judge for yourself...

---

Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/studiohockey/message

This is a public episode. Moderated by journalist and founder of The Hockey Site Ernst Baart, the talk will provide both information and inspiration for anyone seeking to develop their own Indoor Hockey offering, whether in a school, club, state or national setting.

It is not just participation which will be at the focus of this discussion. The panelists, guided by Baart, will also examine how the sport, which is renowned for its atmospheric indoor conditions and vocal crowds, can make the most of its appeal to spectators.

Joining Baart will be Ross Willis, who is currently working with Hockey Ireland on its national indoor programme. Willis is an expert in developing the indoor game as he is tournament manager of PSI South Africa. This is a programme of tournaments, clinics and coaching sessions that has brought indoor hockey to more than 25,000 hockey players across South Africa.

Madeline Hoeppner is Director of Events at USA Field Hockey, where the annual National Indoor Tournament has age group competitions ranging from under 10 through to senior and masters players.

William Davey is operations director of Indoor Hockey UK, which is tapping into the appetite for indoor hockey at club and school level in the UK, and Nacho Usoz is Head Coach to the first team at Complutense HC in Madrid, where indoor hockey is developing alongside its outdoor counterpart.

Whatever your level of interest in this fast and exciting game, the webinar will provide ideas, inspiration and a heap of practical measures to introduce or develop indoor hockey in your own environment.

-

The video podcast is available at Spotify

---

Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/studiohockey/message

This is a public episode. Former Dutch international player Floris Jan Bovelander fell in love with India during his playing days. So when opportunity came knocking, he used his network and resources to set up the Bovelander Foundation to make a change. Together with Jaspreet Sahni, sports writer for The Times of India we talked about hockey, about India and of course the work of his foundation.
Our apologies for the chirping background noise sometimes. The voice however... :) When EHL started to transform our sport, Nick Irvine was the voice that complemented the revolutionary way our game was shown on TV. A decade down the road we know Nick Irvine as the voice of hockey.

"A game of hockey is also about theatre. And every time you go into the theatre you want to be surprised" is a quote by Nick Irvine from our talk with him. We spoke about the way he got started as a hockey commentator, the love of our game, the EHL, the players and teams who made an impression and lots more hockey. Today, Wednesday 2020-10-14, was supposed to be the day the Euro Hockey League would start. Unfortunately a vile virus is messing with our lives and our sport. We all recognise staying healthy is our first concern and playing/watching our sport comes second. But for those who miss our game of hockey, listening to the voice of hockey might offer a bit of consolation until we see better days again :)

Episode 40 was recorded on 2020-10-06, produced by OSMpodcasts.com & published on 2020-10-14
Host: Ernst Baart
Guest: Nick Irvine, sports commentator
Podcast: Studio Hockey

---

Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/studiohockey/message

This is a public episode. But we have to be realistic... For a certain time it will not be as it was.

I believe... I have to believe we will be able to sit alongside each other or stand shoulder to shoulder cheering for our clubs and teams in the near future once again. Face masks and social distancing will be temporary, but for now they're a fact of life

That doesn't mean we can not celebrate the small victories in the meantime. A return to training, all be it with certain restrictions. But also some of our top competitions and major events are being rescheduled. Tokyo 2020 will be hosted.... we hope... in the summer of 2021. The European Championship has been moved to June of 2021, a couple of weeks ahead of Tokyo. Our national associations are talking to their clubs about the best way for their country to resume or restart their domestic club leagues, the beating heart of hockey.

And yes.... the EHL, possibly the best thing that happened to hockey since well.... the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976 introduced hockey to artificial grass...The Euro Hockey League returns in October of 2020.

So we invited Marijke Fleuren, president of the European Hockey Federation to talk about how the current season, now on hold, will finish. What next season might bring us? What will happen to the integration of the women into the EHL? Can we expect some more of these great innovations, such as the self-pass, the EHL brought us?

But let' start with the all important question... or questions... Why does the EHL exist and does it have a future?

Episode 39 was recorded on 2020-05-26 & published on 2020-05-29 by OSMpodcasts.com.
Host: Ernst Baart
Guest: Marijke Fleuren, EHF president
Podcast: Studio Hockey

---

Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/studiohockey/message

This is a public episode. An event where several important decisions regarding the future of our sport were communicated. Also more or less a year ago we spoke with the "new" CEO of the FIH Thierry Weil, before the global congress on some my worries for the future of our sport. Following the global congress a year ago we had a talk with Mike Joyce, director of development for the FIH about the Hockey2024 plan that was about to launch.
So today, more or less a year down the road, with the end of 2019 in sight, we thought it would be good to have another talk with these two administrators from FIH about the plans launched in 2018 and what has been accomplished since then in 2019 or will be in 2020. We defined 10 topics to discuss with them:

FIH Pro LeagueFIH QualifiersTokyo 2020A dry artificial pitchThe FIH.live platformHockey2024Growing hockeyLA 2028One short format of hockeyDo all stakeholders have a voice?

Please note this column is not an exact transcript (far from it) of the podcast. I do recommend both reading the full column as well as listening the full podcast... ;)

FIH Pro League

2019 has been the year of the launch of the FIH Pro League more than anything else probably. At least in terms of visibility on a global scale.
FIH felt it was very important to give a boost to the promotion of hockey around the world. When they spoke to broadcasters their major issue with our sport was the lack of a fixed calendar, a time of year when broadcasters were assured of enough international games to schedule in their programming. So the wish from broadcasters for a more consistent hockey calendar has been fulfilled. The major learning from this first year of the FIH Pro League has been the home & away games in the current schedule were too much of a stress on the health of players. So the 2nd year will see an important change with double home games for some opponents this year followed by double away games for the same the next year. This means travel is cut in half which is not only better for our environmental footprint but especially will be less of a strain on player health. Feedback from coaches and players, according to Weil, was very positive. But obviously some changes were needed going into year two. The change of schedule for player welfare but also a change in the production of these events for TV. More uniformity in showing a recognisable format of the game on TV. Another issue in year 1 has been the lack of supporters in the stands in some countries. A fact Weil blames on the short preparation time between the final green light and the first Pro League games. Not allowing enough time for some good marketing of these events to draw in the crowds. This time however there is enough time for the marketeers in each country to work on a good ticketing plan and promotion of their home games. For example in Germany this time the marketing agency that was in charge for the very successful indoor world cup will make sure the German hockey supporters will not miss out on their home games again, according to Weil. Financially it's clear this first year has been an investment. A much needed investment in the promotion of hockey. But another equally important goal is to create revenue and profit for the FIH to use for the development of hockey around the world. Because in order to grow hockey, more money is needed. So obviously a business plan for this event at some point in time will need to show profits to be able to do more for growing our game of hockey. Though Weil states he would also be happy with a break even and more promotion of our sport, the business plan by the FIH assumes a profit will be generated to help develop hockey as of 2022 or 2023 at the latest.

Still, even if I consider myself a big fan of top international hockey & the FIH Pro League... I will be curious to see a full evaluation by 2023-2024 to see how much money not only the FIH has invested i

---

Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/studiohockey/message

This is a public episode. In Lausanne, Switzerland where the FIH is based first snow has arrived. But that did not stop FIH from launching a couple of press releases in recent days. Announcing some novelties following the meeting of their executive board last week.

In today's podcast & column here we will only be addressing two of these. So the first ever world cup to be held in two different countries will not be on today's agenda. Nor the controversial choice for Bhubaneswar for the men's world cup, meaning 3 out the most recent 4 world cups would be hosted by India.
The choice to start a world cup for Hockey5s by 2023, a possibly fatal choice for our 11v11 game of hockey, will also have to wait for another time. As will the launch of the FIH Intercontinental Cup, basically the 2nd division for the FIH Pro League. We will discuss these choices in separate podcasts & columns in the near future…

However today we will limit ourselves to less controversial though important changes: first we will discuss the new system for our global ranking to be launched in January of 2020. Secondly we will talk about the road to Bhubaneswar and future world cups. Wether these will all be hosted in India is for some other time.

Who better to talk us through the new global ranking and the new pathway to qualify for a world cup then Jon Wyatt, sports & development director for the FIH… We spoke with him before when the idea of a new global ranking was first announced in March (listen here), but now we're close to the launch.

Why we need a new global ranking

As Wyatt explains the current global ranking is based upon tournaments, where the new ranking will be match-based. Since most nations only got to participate in FIH tournaments when qualified, some only got to play for points once or twice every 4 years. Because only some 20% of all official matches played in the international scene were being played in ranking tournaments. So 80% of the games being played did not have any contribution to the world ranking.

That is a problem. Because most nations would have to show to their government or the sports funding bodies in their country some kind of progress to be considered for support. If you hardly ever get to play for world ranking points that becomes a difficult task. So this was one of the more important reasons to rethink the global ranking. But it's not the only reason.

In the previous ranking most everybody will agree there was too much subjectivity, especially in the relative importance given to different continental championships. This led to a flawed ranking. A match-based system will to a certain extent eliminate this subjectivity. Because it will now focus on the relative strength of the two teams playing a game instead of trying to figure out and compare the strength of entire continents.

Besides this, the new ranking will be more simple and dynamic... making it easier to create some extra buzz about individual international games of any level. Because the immediate impact of a win or loss will be easy for all to see.

How & when

The new ranking system will take effect from 2020-01-01 onwards. However FIH has chosen to make the change more gradually. So as not to throw everybody off balance from the get go... Even though the position of the FIH is high performance directors of the nations should not focus on this global ranking, but rather on performing well at key moments such as the Olympics and the World Cup. It is clear an immediate change of the ranking, recalculating the results of the last 4 years for example, would not be fair on those who made their choices in those days based upon the old system. That is why the points for each country in the global ranking on January 1st will be exactly the same as today. But for every game played from that day on the new calculation per match will take effect. Hence for the new system to take full effect it might take some time. It wil

---

Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/studiohockey/message

This is a public episode. Contrary to the monster created by dr. Frankenstein this one has a name. We call it Hockey5s.
Very much parallel to the fictional character from book and movies, I’m convinced some of you will have grown to like the monster. As I’m sure the monster will do some good along the way. Though I fear, as in the story, in the end the monster will come back to destroy its creator.
And about Hockey5s being as ugly as Frankenstein’s monster… Well, let’s just say “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” 😉

Prefer to read all of this? The secret to their success is a simple formula : a stronger domestic league + an ambitious long term plan/vision not just on paper but well executed + patience and a lot of hard work for many years = gold and a 1st place on the global ranking ! Mind you, the simple formula is not a guarantee but it will offer you a fighting chance to make the dream come true.

But let's talk about this global ranking by the FIH. Rumours are it will change one of these days, as it should with all of the disappearing and new events for 2019 and beyond. Think FIH Pro League replacing the Champions Trophy and the FIH Hockey Series replacing the Hockey World League.
Immediately after the World Cup a new global ranking was made public where Belgium moved to first place. Well deserved... But take a closer look and you will see several strange things. Points being awarded for invitational events, excluding other often deserving nations. Points being awarded, lots of points for continental championships where it's almost impossible to balance the difference in strength between all continents...
For example, the Netherlands finished 2nd at this world cup for a silver medal after qualifying for this tournament in an event where they had to win among 6 of the current top 10 nations. For this they get 650 points. Compare this to 630 points awarded to New Zealand for beating Papua New Guinea in their continental championships. Papua New Guinea barely makes the top 50 on this ranking.Or let's look at Australia winning bronze at this World Cup, earning 550 points for a medal at this level is worth the same as for example Canada beating the USA or Brazil in their continentals...

There is only one word to describe this : unfair !
Not exactly what you would expect or want as the description for a global ranking of an Olympic sport... I'm not even going to elaborate on the issues with countries who earned their spot in a major FIH event but get ruled out because the host nation, usually India, took their spot, even when they did not qualify for the event. Resulting in some free undeserved ranking points for one nation at the expense of another.

Anyway... rumour has it the FIH will soon launch a new global ranking. I hope it will be fair ranking with respect for the true sport values.

Allow me to propose a possible system, just in case the FIH is still thinking on it. I'm not sure this is a perfect system either but at least it will be more fair on all hockey playing nations.
I would propose a system where all games played in a recognised official title or qualifying event will earn the teams points upon result. So no points from friendly games, nor from test series even when recognised as official games by the FIH.
Points will be given for games played during the Olympic Games and the World Cup because these are the two major events in the world of hockey. As well as those games in official and recognised events meant for qualification for either the Olympic Games or the World Cup, such as the FIH Hockey Series or the FIH Pro League, the continental championships (including their qualifiers) and the Olympic or World Cup Qualifiers.
The points system should be very simple and straight forward :

a win earns you 10 points + 5 extra points if the team you just beat is ranked above you
a loss is zero points
a draw earns 2 points + 1 extra point if the other team is ranked above you

For performing well in the two major events , the Games and the World Cup, bonus points on top of these game points can be earned:

gold = +100 points
silver = + 80 points
bronze = + 60 points
4th (semi finalist) = +40 points
losing quarter finalists all get +20 points
participation but not making the quarter finals = +10 points

I'll leave it to the FIH or those who want to give it a go to

---

Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/studiohockey/message

This is a public episode.
