This week we continue our celebration of the holiday season with a classic British satire take on the conventions of Christmas from England’s most beloved and prolific author: Terry Pratchett.

Coming from the Discworld Series (with over sixty books), this story is Pratchett’s interpretation of Santa from his own fictional realm and aside from being absolutely hilarious, this book is touching and meaningful in an exploratory fashion. Pratchett seamlessly weaves humor, theme, world-building, and in-depth character development throughout the course of this short but fully fleshed narrative.

Or does he? Maybe that’s all BS and really, he’s just a Douglas Adams wannabe…

Her novels have garnered multiple starred reviews and appeared on Best of Year lists from NPR, Barnes & Noble, Syfy Wire, and others. Jade City has been translated in a dozen languages, named to TIME Magazine’s Top 100 Fantasy Books of All Time, and optioned for television development.

She has also written acclaimed short fiction and been an instructor at writing workshops including Clarion West, Viable Paradise, and Aspen Words. Fonda is a former corporate strategist and black belt martial artist who loves action movies and Eggs Benedict. Born and raised in Canada, she resides in the Boston area.

James L. Sutter is a co-creator of the Pathfinder and Starfinder Roleplaying Games. From 2004 to 2017, he worked for Paizo Publishing, starting out as an editor on Dungeon Magazine, going on to do foundational work for Pathfinder, and eventually becoming the Creative Director in charge of launching Starfinder, as well as the Executive Editor of the Pathfinder Tales novel line for Paizo and Tor, before leaving to write full-time.

James is also the author of the queer young adult romance novels Darkhearts and The Ghost of Us, as well as the fantasy novels Death's Heretic—a finalist for the Compton Crook Award for Best First Novel—and The Redemption Engine, which won the 2015 Scribe Award for Best Original Speculative Novel. His short stories have appeared in such venues as Nightmare, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Escape Pod, and the #1 Amazon best-seller Machine of Death. In addition, he's written comic books, essays in venues like Clarkesworld and Lightspeed: Queers Destroy Science Fiction, a wealth of tabletop gaming material, and video games.

Welcome to another episode of Fermented Fiction. Today we have the honor of welcoming Mark Teppo. Mark is the author of over 12 novels across various genres ranging from thrillers to epic fantasies and westerns. He was the showrunner of the highly acclaimed Foreworld Saga. Mark independently owns and operates Underland Press, and a magazine Underland Arcana.

Our debate topic today is the 2007 Sci-fi horror-thriller, Sunshine. Written by Alex Garland (Annihilation, Civil War, Ex-Machina), Directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later), and starring Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders, Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight) this film about a space-born crew’s mission to re-ignite the sun with a nuclear missile is star-studded (pun intended), ambitious, and somewhat controversial in its reception by fans and critics.

But how will it fare against the scrutiny of our Mr. Teppo and hosts?

This episode is one of the ‘Lost Episodes’ from last season. For those who don’t know, we had some major personnel turnover midway through the season (we lost our editor) and therefore, had plenty of episodes recorded that never got put out into the world. We’ve slowly been re-cooping those episodes and plan to release them throughout the year. This debate with P. Djeli Clark is the first of those special episodes and it’s a great time.

Finally, after all these years of Travis referencing the Wheel of Time (books) endlessly, he is stepping up to debate the newly created TV adaptation. He’s squaring off against our amazing guest, P. Djeli Clark, author of Master of Djinn, Dead Djinn in Cairo, and many published short stories. My favorite short piece of his is “Hide and Seek,” which can be found in Jordan Peele’s short horror collection Out There Screaming.
