My own training in gestalt psychotherapy and improv theatre have shaped my practice. I believe it allows me to be more responsive to groups and to help them take more interesting risks and make more creative connections.

In my team coaching work, I’ve noticed how presentation content can overwhelm personal connection—like pushing a giant ball of data that hides us. Simple gestures matter: waving before showing slides, using hand gestures, saying people’s names, ensuring everyone speaks. The real craft of facilitation lies in these small acts of personal noticing.

The result is pretty good if a bit cheesy. I think it makes the ideas a bit more… approachable somehow.

And it makes a change from me wandering by the river and just talking.

Commercial messages constantly undermine us - from optician ads suggesting we're unfashionable to LinkedIn posts implying we lack leadership skills.

These thousands of daily messages, multiplied by social media, create a persistent "you're not enough" narrative that promotes scarcity rather than abundance.

On many workshops, people don't want more content, yet another model - they need space to process their existing experience and knowledge.

The TLDR is I got a bit tired on the always-on sharing of bright ideas and found myself seeing what it’s like to rein back. To avoid what I call “premature encapsulation.”

I found I become more in my body and able to savour my thinking in a way that doesn’t happen when constantly posting.

I found I enjoyed one-to-one conversations more when I slowed down in this way, and I’ve been able to reflect more deeply on what I want to be doing with my work.

Recently, I read research on multiplication learning, showing that kids performed best when allowed to learn at their own pace. This insight reinforces my belief in experiential, self-paced learning, where each person progresses according to their unique style and speed.
