In this episode, I explore what happens when a clear developmental demand collides with discomfort, uncertainty, self-image, and the fear of getting something wrong. The result is often not simple refusal, but something subtler: modifying the assignment, seeking reassurance, substituting a familiar strength, explaining why we did something different, or turning a task back into a relational exchange. We preserve our existing organization while appearing to engage the challenge.

FTFI is not an argument for obedience. Mature people can question an instruction, refuse it, or leave a developmental container altogether. But once we voluntarily accept a challenge, discomfort does not automatically invalidate the demand. Sometimes the instruction is specifically designed to prevent us from solving a problem in the way we already know how to solve it. Productive failure, confusion, and temporary incompetence are not defects in that process; they are often the conditions under which genuine learning becomes possible.

Using an astrological case study, I look at the relationship among Will, Structure, standards, and learning—and at the crucial distinction between scaffolding another person’s capacity and substituting our capacity for theirs. Development requires support, but support becomes counterproductive when it repeatedly rescues us from the very conditions that would require us to grow.

This is a public episode. (HMP31)

Members get this one early!

Why do some people receive important feedback and change quickly, while others can hear the same feedback repeatedly for years without substantially reorganizing?

Yes, I’m talking about reorganizational velocity again: the speed at which we allow new information, feedback, and reality to change the way we think and operate.

The challenge is that receiving information is not the same as reorganizing around it. We can understand feedback intellectually, agree with it, discuss it, and even take action while preserving essentially the same underlying structure that created the problem in the first place.

The episode explores why this happens, including our attachment to coherence, identity, certainty, comfort, and existing ways of making sense of the world. Sometimes what looks like resistance to feedback is actually an attempt to preserve psychological continuity—to assimilate new information without allowing it to fundamentally change us.

Our mystery celebrity chart provides a striking counterexample. Over the course of his life, he repeatedly allowed experience and new evidence to overturn beliefs that were deeply connected to his identity, religion, community, and public reputation. His evolution illustrates an important distinction: having strong convictions does not require absolute allegiance to those convictions when reality contradicts them.

The episode also examines this phenomenon through developmental astrology, comparing chart structures that tend toward preservation and continuity with those that may make destabilization, iteration, and reorganization easier.

Ultimately, maturity requires more than being open to feedback. It requires becoming curious about what happens inside us when feedback threatens the structure we already have.

To support the podcast by becoming a member, go to content.clearandopen.com

This is a public episode. Suneet and I crossed paths, exchanged some emails and I decided to have him on the podcast. And while I don’t often have guests on this podcast, I’m really glad I did. This was a very organic, spontaneous, and lively conversation. I hit record one minute into our zoom just to see what would happen and if we could use it.

One of the things I realized, and I shared this with Suneet after recording, is that while I used to focus more on purpose and was trained in some methodologies early in my career at EMyth, and I don’t focus much on it now. I think there are two reasons for that. The first is that when students come to me I assume they’re clear about what they want and are willing to do what it takes. My work is deep, intense, and requires serious commitment, so it tends to filter out those who are not clear about their purpose.

But even before we spoke, Suneet’s work got me thinking about what may potentially be a second reason and a blind spot for me: because for almost all of my life, I have been so clear about my purpose (whatever it was at the moment) that I think I project that clarity onto others in ways that isn’t true. So I’m continuing to chew on the observation that he makes in the very beginning: that self-awareness is a critical and often missing foundation that substantive purpose must be built upon.

So I’m really glad that Suneet wrote a book and is helping people get clear, because I completely agree it’s vitally important, even if as a teacher I like to help people who are clear at the moment about what they want.

Suneet’s website: makingsenseofpurpose.com

As promised, here’s the Tony Robbin video we talk about:

This is a public episode. How is an awakening process tainted by the confirmation bias assumption that there is no self? And what happens when you wake up without that assumption? What is enlightenment if we cannot actually subtract out the personal contribution to its expression?

What if the “totally gone” apparent state of famous nondual teachers is not necessarily an artifact of their awakening, but psychostructurally exhibited as capacity in their astrological chart? But projection is bigger than this in ways most people never realize. We project existentially, contextually, and globally in a way that stops us from encountering reality or other people in significant and meaningful ways.

Merely addressing triggers and judgments won’t deconstruct this kind of projection. That’s the topic in today’s podcast, especially as it relates to projection with teachers and how to be a student. While looking at a celebrity chart, who we’ll play with as a mystery today, I stumbled across yet another diagnostic tool available to us via astrology, adding another layer of psychological resolution to what a chart can tell us.

This distinction also casts a bright light on the difference between development and success, as the celebrity chart reveals. (HMP19)

What’s the difference between changing and negotiating with change?

It could be the most important distinction in your life.

Most people conflate the two and it slows them down. They pat themselves on the back for their effort, but don’t realize how much friction the negotiation creates. It’s fine to negotiate with change. It’s part of the process, but if you don’t know you’re doing it, it can become all of the process.

It’s okay to negotiate. Admit it. Own it. It’s fine. Negotiate to completion. Or negotiate forever if you want to. Just don’t mistake the negotiation for the actual change. That’s what causes stagnation. Be honest with yourself. Change is hard. You don’t have to like it. You can hate it and still change. Don’t pretend you like it, that’s often a ruse. Like the results, not necessarily the process. If you like the process, you’re likely negotiating for too long.

For more information about becoming a member, go to content.clearandopen.com

For info about Development Astrology and other services: clearandopen.com

This is a public episode. I use a celebrity mystery chart to illustrate how success and development are two very different things.

The implication of recasting houses as developmental pressures is that your life lessons are reliably hard-coded in your chart. That’s why everybody rigorously follows their developmental path, does the uncomfortable things, and grows as people.

Just kidding.

What we all do, in the beginning, is compensate instead of develop. Compensation can be seen as the avoidance of development in specific ways. Identity is a compensation for avoiding the authentic quest to discover oneself. Achievement is a compensation for real self-authority. Intensity is a compensation for transformation.

Each house is a question to be lived into and deepened in a way that makes us grow. We have the free will to do that…or not. To avoid the question, however, requires a compensatory substitute that ultimately will fail. This is now mappable on a chart.

Related to this, since I began doing Structural Development Maps, I’ve noticed that some people literally dissociate rather than engage with this X-Ray of their psyche. They cannot or will not read it. That tells me how powerful it is. It also tells me it’s not for everyone.

How would you engage a map that shows exactly how you might be avoiding your most important life lessons?

I recall the ominous words of Lady Galadriel when Frodo asks if he should look into the Elvish Mirror that can show the past, present and future in any part of the world.

“Seeing is both good and perilous.”

For more information on my good and perilous offerings, go to clearandopen.com

This is a public episode. I examine the difference between discernment and projection, intuition and unfalsifiable certainty, and why any framework that cannot be questioned eventually loses contact with reality.

Related to that, I lead you through another edition of Structure Before Story, using the chart of a highly intuitive and successful public figure who was often profoundly right, and gradually began using that accuracy to justify increasingly distorted and abusive ways of relating to other people. We explore the danger of mapping essence from outcomes, the seductive nature of intuition when it works repeatedly, and why structural thinking matters even more in domains where emotion, charisma, and insight are present.

For info about my Developmental Astrological Reads, go to clearandopen.com

To become a member: content.clearandopen.com

This is a public episode. It’s not confidence or independence. It’s whether we regulate our perception and decisions internally, or through other people.

Most of us co-construct reality with others. We feel something, check it, adjust it, then act. That creates distortion and dependency. Self-authority changes the sequence. We perceive, locate ourselves, and act—without needing external confirmation.

We also look at the cost. As we stop outsourcing our sense of reality, we lose constant validation. That can feel like loneliness, but it’s actually increased contact with reality, not disconnection.

In practice, this shows up as cleaner boundaries, less over-explaining, and no need to persuade or be understood. We stop trying to change people and instead decide what we engage with.

The point of self-authority is simple: we stop outsourcing our relationship to reality. Everything else—clarity, integrity, leadership—follows from that.

This is a public episode. (HMP07)

New course begins April 2, 2026: Discernment, Structure, and Leadership

https://courses.clearandopen.com/discernment-structure-leadership

This episode is an early release for members. To become a member and get access to live monthly Second Sunday Zooms, go to content.clearandopen.com

Today:

Most people say they value truth, but far fewer are actually organized by it. In the last episode, I explored how the Moon, as a regulatory function, reveals whether someone stabilizes around truth or around something else. In this episode, I take the next step: if not truth, then what?

This conversation introduces a structural model for understanding what people actually stabilize around under pressure. Rather than treating behavior as inconsistency or irrationality, we look at it functionally. What is the system protecting when accuracy becomes destabilizing?

The answer is not singular. There are a small number of recurring stabilizing patterns that show up across individuals and systems. Once you can see them, behavior becomes far more predictable, and your expectations become more grounded in reality.

People do not fail to follow truth. They succeed at stabilizing something else.

The key question is not what someone says they value, but what they actually use to regain equilibrium when challenged.

Stabilization vs. truth

Why most people default to stability over accuracy when the two come into conflict, and why this is not hypocrisy but structure.

The five primary stabilizers

A breakdown of the most common ways people regulate under pressure:

Emotional stabilization: prioritizing what feels better over what is accurateIdentity stabilization: protecting self-concept over integrating new informationRelational stabilization: preserving connection and loyalty over truthShallow coherence: settling for explanations that “kind of make sense” without structural depthAvoidance: minimizing discomfort as quickly as possible by disengaging

Why truth loses

Truth is often the most destabilizing option in the short term. It requires reorganization, which most systems are not structured to tolerate without sufficient pressure or support.

Predictability of behavior

Once you identify what someone stabilizes around, you can predict how they will respond when truth conflicts with that stabilizer.

Structural thinking

Structural thinking means tracking what function is actually governing behavior, not taking stated values at face value. This is a core leadership skill.

Application

How to assess real-time behavior:

What is this person protecting right now? What would they choose if truth conflicts with their stabilizer? What is actually possible given how they are organized?

This framework applies across:

Coaching and leadershipRelationships and conflictOrganizational dynamicsPersonal development

Key Takeaways

People do not reorganize around truth simply because it is clear.Stabilization drives behavior more than stated values.Clarity does not bypass process.Seeing what someone stabilizes around allows you to predict outcomes and adjust your approach.

Related Work

This episode builds directly on the previous discussion of Moon placement and regulation styles, and connects to a broader body of work on structural thinking, leadership, and development.

If you’re interested in going deeper into how to apply this kind of thinking in real-world contexts, I’ll be teaching a course on structural leadership and analysis.

This is a public episode. (HMP06)

Most people say they value truth. Far fewer are actually organized by it when it comes into conflict with their sense of stability. The distinction is not philosophical but functional. It shows up under pressure. When a person’s current model of reality is challenged, what do they protect first: accuracy or stability? That choice reveals how their system is organized.

From a developmental perspective, this dynamic can be understood through the lens of emotional or nervous system regulation, which in Vedic astrology is reflected in the Moon. How a person stabilizes (whether through comfort, coherence, meaning, or accuracy) shapes their relationship to change and truth. Some individuals stabilize by preserving continuity and avoiding disruption, while others stabilize by seeking greater alignment with reality, even when it is uncomfortable.

This reframes the idea of the “truth seeker.” It is not primarily a moral or philosophical stance. For some people, truth itself is stabilizing. Inaccuracy creates friction, and clarity brings relief. For others, disruption is destabilizing, so truth is only tolerated when it does not threaten existing assumptions. Both are forms of regulation, but they produce very different outcomes over time.

This also explains why people become triggered in the presence of misalignment. A person who stabilizes through accuracy may react strongly when encountering distortion or incoherence, not simply because it is “wrong,” but because it destabilizes their system. In this sense, reactions to truth and falsehood are not just ideological: they are structural.

Change typically occurs when existing forms of stability stop working. As long as a person’s current model of reality produces workable results, there is little incentive to question it. Curiosity is not simply a personality trait; it often emerges under pressure. When stability can no longer be maintained, the system is forced into inquiry. At that point, truth becomes less of a value and more of a necessity.

This perspective also challenges narrative-driven frameworks such as soulmates or past lives as primary organizing models. The same patterns and archetypal information can be observed structurally through astrology in a way that is more direct, testable, and less prone to distortion. The question is not which story is more compelling, but which model allows for clearer perception and more reliable orientation.

Ultimately, the measure of a person’s relationship to truth is not what they claim to value, but how they respond when their current way of seeing is disrupted. If the system moves to preserve its existing frame, stability remains primary. If it reorganizes despite the cost, then truth has become organizing.

This is a public episode.
