The Institute of Men exists to build, strengthen, and form Christian men by helping them figure out what kind of man they want to be and pursuing that vision relentlessly for the rest of their life. It is the easiest way to be updated about content and to read all that I publish.

Show Notes

One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. Proverbs 13:7

One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

We talk about money a lot on this podcast because if you mess up money in your twenties and especially in your 30’s, you’re gonna have really hard time later in life.

Money is your first line of responsibility as you become an adult, begin to pay for stuff, and to earn your own income. A lot of people in their 20’s blow everything they make because when you’re young, you make stupid choices.

I was one of those guys. I made stupid choices. I swear, God did not allow me to make more money than 30k until I learned some hard lessons. I’m partly kidding, and partly convinced that is true.

I used to pretend to be rich by eating out all the time. I used to pretend to be rich by buying nice gifts I couldn’t afford. Believe it or not, I used to have a great wardrobe. I had no money in my account but I was keeping H&M in business.

We could talk about this proverb today as pretend you are poor, live under a budget, live on less than you make, and you will get wealth - I think that is one thing this proverb is conveying.

But I also think this proverb is speaking to an attitude that is prevalent in the human heart: the deceitfulness of riches.

Those who appear rich are placing their trust in their image - they are anxious about what they should wear, eager to look like Solomon.

Other hoard all they have, placing their future security in the abundance. They have built bigger barns and said to their soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” Luke 12:19

It is the spirit of Scrooge.

Now before I go through this any further, you socialist leaning people who think I am saying the government should come in a redistribute wealth - nope. That is called stealing and its against the 7th commandment and against the 9th and 10th commandment (depending on how you count them) to not covet what your neighbor has.

No, what I am talking about is the human proclivity to serve mammon rather than God, no matter how much or how little we have in our savings account.

There are plenty of people who are wealthy and yet live so cheap they crowd out other areas of their life. They are hoarding their money, falling for the deceitfulness of riches as THE means of security and as the only thing that matters.

So what do we do? How do we draw the line, how do we avoid being legalistic?

Serve God.

You cannot serve God and money so the answer to all money conflicts is to serve God. That means you pray, and you live as you are led. Serve God. Contribute to what he is doing on the earth as you have means. It means pay your taxes and your debts.

Links

Youtube

Spotify

Apple Podcasts

Google Podcasts

Get full access to Institute of Men at instituteofmen.substack.com/subscribe

Keaton Tucker

<itunes:author>Keaton Tucker</itunes:author><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>816</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://substackcdn.com/feed/podcast/1555226/post/137001523/d42ef1b973320d8c040c96a1fe85d780.jpg"/>

What To Do if You Are Single

How should you prepare for marriage? I want my words to be truthful, precise, direct, and easy to understand. I do not want my words to be vague, deceitful, or filled with lies. I do not want my foolish words to trap me.

Words easily become a snare.

I fall into a snare because I do not want to disappoint or let down, or anger people in my life.

I make caveats and try to explain away what I believe so as not to be “offensive”. But I know what I am doing. I am being a coward. Cowardice and prudence are different. Often I prefer peace more than righteousness. Peace before righteousness is unrighteous peace. It is a falsity, a temporary form of peace that is a trap.

I lie, I deceive, I am intentionally vague because I want to control the outcome of my life and my relationships. To tell the truth is to surrender the outcome of whatever happens. If I tell the truth, I cannot control how other people respond.

To tell the truth, I must choose between fear or trust which might be the hardest decision in the world to make.

Thank you for reading and listening to the Institute of Men. It could be alcohol, weed, porn, slothfulness, fear, a demeaning relationship, something. More often than not, when I talk to guys its either alcohol, porn, or weed, or some combination that is killing them. But how often do we really stop? How often do we stop doing the thing we know we should not be doing? Rarely. Especially if its with alcohol, weed, or porn, things that are highly addictive to men. If you are unable to stop those and if you allow them to continually steal from your life, one day, it’ll cost you everything. You are going to have to be ruthlessly honest with yourself.

You will have to acknowledge that your bad habit, your secret, your addiction, your bad relationship, whatever it is, you will have to acknowledge that it is killing you. When we are ruthlessly honest, we have to think through everything that could or will happen in the future, bring it into the present, and confront it. We no longer say, “this is bad I should stop”, we say, “This is killing me and my future and if I don’t face all the possible consequences, it will continue to steal, kill, and destroy me.”

You might need to scare yourself in order to change.

Get full access to Institute of Men at instituteofmen.substack.com/subscribe

Keaton Tucker

<itunes:author>Keaton Tucker</itunes:author><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>2272</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://substackcdn.com/feed/podcast/1555226/post/123993119/93208e8e2ed41683455ab20f9347d73b.jpg"/>

Be Not Envious of Evil Men - Wisdom Wednesday

Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them.

By wisdom a house is built, but understanding it is established. What does it mean to be a man? Is it being macho? Is it being an outdoorsman? I think those are just personality traits and interests. My working definition of manhood is: manhood is responsibility. You want to be a man of valor, a man of good courage, strong and daring, fearless. You want to lead your family, take responsibility, take part in work that matters, fighting a good fight, making a difference in someone’s life, maybe even greater than just one. You want to be a man of character, a man of good presence, someone people like to have around, a man your wife and others can admire and look up to as an exemplar and a leader.

You want your life to be more than video games, a few beers and fantasy football. You’ve PR’d your bench press, your squat – I’m here for it, get as strong as you can – but you’re also wondering if your spiritual strength will ever measure up to the strength of your body – of maybe you’re wondering if you’re not much of a man because you aren’t strong at all, but you have a good heart which others call soft.

Maybe you think of yourself as nothing more than a mechanic, a barista, a trainer, a creative, on your fourth job this year hoping you don’t have to go back to chik-fil-a or clearing carpets at the movie theater; the question “what do you do for work” has become the question you dread because the answer immediately causes people to think less of you. Or at least you think it does.

If someone asked you to pray you wouldn’t know what to say and its embarrassing for you. You dread if people ask you for advice because you don’t know if what you’d say is helpful but secretly you wish someone would ask you at least one question to prove to you that someone cares about what you have to say.

Maybe you are filled with shame for past mistakes that no one can know about so you hide it from the public, but it is on repeat in your mind day by day. Maybe your shame is linked to the surmounting debt you find yourself in – how did I get so much?

You think to yourself “I will never be as smart or as successful as… fill in the blank with the person you see daily who looks like they have it all together.

You tell yourself, “I am just a shadow of a man – It’s nice Keaton that your father asked you what kind of man you wanted to be and was present for all your games and dinner. But my dad left when I was 9 years old so I had to fend for myself and teach myself. Yeah, I want life to be more than it currently is and I want to became the man I know I could be, the man I envision I could be but here I am, on my couch again for tonight’s round of Netflix and chill by myself. I’ll crack another beer, pour another drink, open another bag of chips, and let my life be what it is. Sure I am angry about it but don’t let them see your anger – that might be labeled toxic. I don’t want to be called toxic. It’s better that I sink into this couch, a stone of a man or sloth of a man depending on the day. Who needs men anyway.

I wouldn’t even know how to be a man if I tried.

I have tried and gave a good effort. I followed the advice of this podcast, I went to church but it didn’t connect. What are those songs y’all sing? I tried the books, the podcasts the workouts. But I think I will accept my life as it is.

Such is the story of many, many, men every single day. If any of that resonated with you, you are in good company. I’ve been there and everything I listed I have heard from at least one man at one time. What you struggle with or think of yourself is common to all men. And that is because those feelings you keep so close to your chest and ignore linked to something in your way – you look like a man but internally don’t feel like the man you know you could be.

What is described above is also not new – the conditions above, you could say are men who feel distressed, bitter in soul, and indebted. And there is a way out.

Thank you for reading Institute of Men. Of 12 extra hours per week?

624 hours per year.

Over a 5 year period, that is 130 extra days. Not 8 hour days, 24 hour days.

Jesus was a man who had a full schedule and made the most of his time.

Hear me – I am not advocating or suggesting you work 80 hours a week at your job. Not at all, I don’t believe that is a good use of time.

What I am advocating though is that you get rid of all the dilly dally things in your life that keep your distracted and ineffective. Right now, most of my listeners, you are responsible for only you which means you don’t have that much responsibility. But one day you will. One day you will be married; you will have kids; you will have a higher promotion.

One day you will be responsible for more than yourself and if you dilly dally your time away now instead of preparing you will carry those bad habits into your future. Right now you can work 32 hours a week, eat poorly, and play video games till late at night.

Is that what you want to bring into your future?

Is that the kind of man you want to be?

Is that the legacy you want to leave?

Your twenties are your defining decade according to Dr. Meg Jay (she wrote a book about it). How you spend your twenties sets the stage for the rest of your life. It is time to use that time well. Now is the time to practice and prepare for that future responsibility by owning and investing your time wisely, not dilly dallying in things that do not profit.

---

Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/keaton-tucker4/message

Get full access to Institute of Men at instituteofmen.substack.com/subscribe

Keaton Tucker

<itunes:author>Keaton Tucker</itunes:author><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>1846</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://substackcdn.com/feed/podcast/1555226/post/113047411/ae9ddf685df63d6197b38e2ee47162d1.jpg"/>

Ancient Paths - Wisdom Wednesday

If you give thought to your future, Wisdom is there. The same is true if you’re responsible, strong, daring, courageous, and all the other manly virtues, if you have those things in your character, life is going to be better for you. Since one of the core tenants of Marxism is dissolution of the family AND Christianity, the best things churches in the west can do is build strong families with strong generational ties up to grandparents.
Over the next 5-10 years
The churches who can give a compelling theological vision of the FAMILY will be the churches people seek.

For the men: Fatherhood, Husband, and Manhood.
For the Women: Motherhood, Wife, and womanhood.

Deconstruction of Christianity is rooted in enlightenment liberalism fused with critical theory. “I am free and autonomous, therefore I can interpret how I choose” (enlightenment liberalism)and “we must pull apart all that has not promoted freedom and autonomy”(critical theory). How should you grow? In this episode, we talk about how to spend your time and what to do with your life while you are single that will set you up for a great marriage.
1. Die to yourself daily. In marriage you find out how selfish you are, throw in a child and you really find out how selfish you are. Selfish people ruin marriages, dying to yourself is the cure.
a. Do something inconvenient to you. Do something against your preferences. Do something you don’t want to do. It’s good for you.
b. There are few things that irritate me more than a man who cannot be inconvenienced for the sake of others. The gravitational pull of his selfishness is so strong that if he is asked to do something or expected to do something that is outside his preferences, he throws a fit. It drives me nuts. Good luck with that attitude man, in all of life, but especially being married. You’re gonna have a hard time and your wife will come to resent you.
c. You will find out how much you need to die to yourself when you get married so you might as well practice now, it’ll be much easier.
2. Go help build your local church however you can. I think every single man should serve in youth or kids for at least 4 years.
3. Figure out what kind of man you want to be and pursue that relentlessly.
4. Memorize and live out Proverbs 24.
a. Verse 27 – get some direction in your life. Find a career you can stick to for several years, work really hard, grow, doubt, and endure. Then build your house (get married, have a family). This also has to do with money: make sure you have the income to support your house.
b. Verse 28-29 – practice non retaliating and telling the truth. If you retaliate when you are single, you will when you are married and its not gonna go well for you.
5. Rid your life of laziness. Take on as much responsibility as you can.
a. Proverbs 24:30-34
6. Learn how to handle money/get out of debt/self-control with money.
7. Enjoy it.
Bonus:
Read great books. Don’t read self help nonsense. It’s got the nutritional value of cotton candy for your soul and character. I know plenty of people who have become wealthy by following steps in self-help books, but I have yet to meet anyone interesting, with something to say, with deep character, who read self-help books. Read good books, old books.
Learn to write. That way you learn how to think, and it’ll force you to put into words what you believe. It sounds clear in your mind till you put it on paper and then not so much. Till you practice
Learn to speak. Precision in your words and the ability to speak on any occasion is a skill you will need for the rest of your life. Being able to speak is the great skill every man should master. Easiest way to begin to learn to speak is reading out loud.

---

Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/keaton-tucker4/message

Get full access to Institute of Men at instituteofmen.substack.com/subscribe

Keaton Tucker

<itunes:author>Keaton Tucker</itunes:author><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>2791</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://substackcdn.com/feed/podcast/1555226/post/113047427/718679ddadbe5586f9655d351192e4c2.jpg"/>

Fear God and Take Your Own Part

Every single Sunday I get a reminder on my phone that says, “you need a moral vision to be effective, you need to know what you believe and why, what you don’t believe and why. The men who know what they believe and why will shape the future of this country and their family for generations. And you must be able to live out and communicate what you believe.”
“Fear God and Take your Own part” is a book written by Teddy Roosevelt during the outbreak of WWI. The opening chapter of this book is an appeal to the nation to pursue righteousness, which means virtue and moral uprightness, to not shirk responsibility and to avoid the ignoble ease and laziness that plagues so many of us. It also means to seek the good of your neighbor. That is important. The biblical word for righteousness is dikaiosynē which means “how one ought to be, approved by God and man, integrity, purity of life, virtue, correctness of thinking (that one is huge right now), correctness of feeling and acting. The pursuit of righteousness is the highest calling because with the pursuit of righteousness comes everything else. Strength comes, peace comes, love, justice, order, liberty. Paul says to Timothy in one of his letters to “flee evil desires and to pursue righteousness.” It appears over 500 times in the old testament, over 200 times in the new testament if my sources are correct, making it one of the most revered pursuits and topics of the bible.

---

Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/keaton-tucker4/message

Get full access to Institute of Men at instituteofmen.substack.com/subscribe

Keaton Tucker

<itunes:author>Keaton Tucker</itunes:author><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>3087</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://substackcdn.com/feed/podcast/1555226/post/113047428/4ca1f8d164cb3ecf97cd5e80de201ccd.jpg"/>

Faithful Acceptance of Everyday Problems

Becoming the man you want to be requires growth and when we talk about growth there is an underlying assumption that we can control how that growth happens. In this episode, I dive into what I mean by that and the different degrees of responsibility men can grow in in order to become the men they desire to be.
Quotes from Episode
Take responsibility away from a man and he will begin the endless search for pleasure and comfort to his own demise and the demise of those around him.
“I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and it’s stone wall was broken down. Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber and want like an armed man.” Proverbs 24:30-34
"I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life, the life of toil and effort, of labor and strife; to preach that highest form of success which comes, not to the man who desires mere easy peace, but to the man who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, or from bitter toil, and who out of these wins the splendid ultimate triumph". Teddy Roosevelt
Justice among the nations of mankind and the uplifting of humanity can only be brought about by those strong and daring men who with wisdom love peace but who love righteousness more than peace. Undoubtedly collective power is essential to this end but no exercise of collective power will ever avail if the average man does not keep his sense of personal duty, initiative, and responsibility. There is need to develop all the virtues that have the state of their sphere of action, but these virtues are as dust if the tender virtues of a family life based on the love of the one man for the one woman and on their joyous and fearless acceptance of common obligation to the children they have born. There must be the keenest sense of duty and with it must go the joy of living. There must be shame at the thought of shirking the hard work of the world, and at the same time delight in the many-sided beauty of life.

---

Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/keaton-tucker4/message

Get full access to Institute of Men at instituteofmen.substack.com/subscribe

Keaton Tucker

<itunes:author>Keaton Tucker</itunes:author><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>3460</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://substackcdn.com/feed/podcast/1555226/post/113047438/0660cb9e5d18f7eb42bd59614be152e0.jpg"/>

Personal Responsibility - W/ Dylan

Today I sit down with my brother Dylan and we have a chat about personal responsibility, manhood, church, history, and all sorts of stuff. I am heavily influenced by my father who is the greatest ordinary man I have ever met and I say "ordinary" on purpose. He never held a position of power, he won't be remembered in the history book or asked to speak at a large event. But he changed the course of his family history by staying faithful to his wife of 38 years and raising three outstanding boys (well, at least two, the jury is still out on me).
