Listening Log

As you can probably tell by the lack of uploads, I’ve been in a bit of musical rut. so to counteract that I‘ve been(trying to) listening to more albums. So, introducing a new segment called listening log. I’ll just be doing super quick reviews of albums I’ve heard recently as well as my fave tracks from each album!

Sunkissed

Shoegaze / Trip Hop

Super spacy and cool trip hop / shoegaze album from the early 2000. Sunkissed is filled to the brim with beautiful textures and melodies. Though I really enjoyed it, I think some songs run a bit longer than they really needed to. I’d recommend anyone trying to get more into trip hop or Shoegaze give it a listen.

R&B / Soul

Music of My Mind is Stevie wonder’s 3rd album from the 70s and the first of a legendary 5 album run. I’m a big fan of the back half of this album with Super woman being the only one of the first 5 songs to really impress me. That being said, this album is CATCHY, So i fully anticipate all of the songs to bore themselves deep into my mind in the weeks to come.

I feel kinda dumb that it took this long for me to check out this album! Hi everyone! Today’s episode was supposed to come out yesterday but I forgot about the Super Bowl lol. So I figured delaying it by a day would be the better move. Speaking of the Super Bowl, I only cared about the halftime show (I’m more of a basketball guy). Bad Bunny and his team really killed it, the programming of the songs, the actual performance, and the set design were INSANE. I’d love to hear what you thought!

I also listened to a couple of new albums, notably Croak Dreams by Puma Blue, The Fall Off by J. Cole, Butterfly by Daphni, and Piss in the Wind by Joji. Out of those four, I only really loved the Puma Blue and Daphni projects. What have you been listening to this week?

Lastly, this week’s episode is a 20-minute J Dilla / Nujabes tribute. I always think it’s crazy that they were both born on the same day and passed around the same date (different years, though). After that, we move into some Soul and R&B, rocking back and forth between the classics and newer stuff.

So, this is a bit different from how I normally do the radio show for two reasons.

First, this is a paid episode with a fifteen-minute preview for free subscribers. If you’re interested in listening to the whole thing, you can subscribe for five bucks. It would mean a great deal to me and would be super helpful.

The second reason is that I wanted to let the music speak for itself. I also found interview clips of D’Angelo that, while not necessarily crafting a narrative, help inform the songs I chose. D’Angelo didn’t speak very often, but when he did, I think he was pretty consistent about what he was about and what he was into.

Listening to his interviews at different points in his life is interesting because you can really see that throughline. You see the same themes come up over and over again.

And through making this, I was trying to come up with a neat little bow. I’m not sure if I did, but I think what I learned most from D’Angelo in this whole process was to remain curious about art, and about music specifically.

He talks a lot about his influences and how important it was for him to find the people who influenced them. He’d say something like, “I love Prince, but Prince loved Sly. Prince loved James Brown.” So because he loved Prince, he sought those other artists out.

I think that’s so important to do. It’s really easy, especially nowadays with algorithms and all that, to just listen to what you’re served. But taking that initiative and being curious is super important.

I’m still not really over his passing, and it’s something I think about constantly. I just wanted to end this by saying that I’m eternally grateful to D’Angelo for his music and for his insight.

How is everyone doing! I’ve been doing OK this week. I’m working on something that could be very cool, but I can’t talk much about it quite yet hehe. The reason I stopped the newsletter earlier this year was because I felt like i was cosplaying as a writer, when in reality, my heart is way more into curation.
