Inside, they were asked to do four fairly ordinary things.</p><p>Rest.</p><p>Meditate.</p><p>Listen to music.</p><p>Watch a movie.</p><p>The molecule remained the same.</p><p>The surroundings changed.</p><p>And the brain changed with them.</p><p>For years, one of the dominant descriptions of the psychedelic brain has been disorder.</p><p>Networks that ordinarily keep to themselves begin communicating across old boundaries. Familiar organization loosens. Signals become less synchronized, less modular, more entropic.</p><p>The usual partitions do not hold.</p><p>That description is not wrong. The new study found the loosening too.</p><p>But it may have been looking at only half the event.</p><p>Researchers at Monash University and an international group of collaborators gathered the largest single-site dataset yet of people undergoing brain imaging during the acute effects of psilocybin. They recorded the participants with both functional magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalography. Then they used machine-learning methods that could follow brain activity as it moved through time rather than reducing the experience to a single average.</p><p>The averages looked disordered.</p><p>The movement did not.</p><p>When the researchers preserved the temporal shape of the activity, patterns appeared. The brain state during music became distinguishable from the brain state during meditation. The movie left a different trajectory from rest.</p><p>Under psilocybin, the brain was not simply becoming less organized.</p><p>It was becoming organized differently—more distinctly around what the person was doing and experiencing at that moment.</p><p>The room had entered the data.</p><p>It had left fingerprints.</p><p>The researchers called the larger state <strong>embeddedness</strong>.</p><p>Normally, brain systems involved in the internal world and systems responding to the external world remain partly separated. That separation helps maintain a familiar border: here is the self; there is everything else.</p><p>Under psilocybin, that border became less firm. Networks that ordinarily help keep internal and external processing apart began to integrate. Participants who reported feeling less separate from their surroundings—more continuous with them—also showed stronger alignment between their brain dynamics and the context they were in.</p><p>The stronger that alignment, the deeper the positively felt boundary-dissolving experience tended to be. It was also associated with greater positive change in mindset the following day.</p><p>Half the participants ranked the session among the most meaningful experiences of their lives.</p><p>This does not mean the movie caused meaning, or that a particular piece of music can be prescribed like a dose. It does not tell us whether meditation is better than rest, or which room produces which result.</p><p>It says something quieter and possibly more consequential.</p><p>Context was not merely scenery around the drug.</p><p>The brain’s response carried its shape.</p><p>Observant physicians have known versions of this for a very long time.</p><p>The same procedure can land differently when a patient feels safe. Pain changes with expectation. Trust alters what can be endured. A diagnosis heard in a hurried corridor is not the same event as the identical words received from someone who stays in the room.</p><p>Medicine has generally treated these differences as important but secondary: bedside manner, compliance, atmosphere, the human wrapping around the real intervention.</p><p>The real intervention is presumed to be the compound, the incision, the electrical pulse—the part that can be isolated, standardized and named.</p><p>But psilocybin makes that division difficult to maintain.</p><p>The compound appears to loosen some of the ordinary separation between a person and what surrounds them. At precisely that point, the surroundings become more legible in the organization of the brain.</p><p>The medicine was not alone.</p><p>Perhaps no medicine ever is. Perhaps this one simply makes the company easier to see.</p><p>Here is where the evidence ends and the opening begins.</p><p>The participants were healthy adults, not patients receiving treatment for depression, addiction or trauma. The study measured next-day mindset, not long-term clinical recovery. It did not compare luxurious rooms with institutional ones. It did not test the presence or absence of a trusted clinician. It does not prove that an attentive setting causes a better therapeutic outcome.</p><p>What it provides is a neurobiological reason to take those questions more seriously.</p><p>If context can become organized into the acute brain response, then the setting around a psychedelic treatment may be more than a delivery container. It may participate in what is being delivered.</p><p>That makes access stranger.</p><p>We usually ask whether a medicine will be affordable by looking at the price of the medicine.</p><p>How difficult is the molecule to manufacture?</p><p>How strong is the patent?</p><p>Will insurance cover the dose?</p><p>Can a public system purchase enough of it?</p><p>But perhaps the expensive part of psychedelic treatment will not ultimately be the compound.</p><p>Perhaps it will be the uninterrupted time.</p><p>The trusted human presence.</p><p>The preparation before anything begins.</p><p>The carefully held environment while familiar boundaries become less reliable.</p><p>The hours afterward in which an experience is helped to enter the rest of a life.</p><p>A wealthy patient could receive the molecule inside a private, attentive and spacious encounter. A public system under pressure could be tempted to retain the drug while compressing everything around it.</p><p>Shorten the preparation.</p><p>Standardize the music.</p><p>Increase the number of patients one clinician monitors.</p><p>Replace presence with surveillance.</p><p>Move the next person into the room.</p><p>The chemical dose might remain identical.</p><p>The treatment might not.</p><p>That is conjecture. The study did not compare those systems.</p><p>But it gives the conjecture somewhere real to stand.</p><p>If the room can leave fingerprints on the brain, unequal rooms may become one way unequal medicine is made.</p><p>There is another possibility inside the same finding.</p><p>If context matters, context can be studied.</p><p>Not every effective setting must be expensive, ornate or private. Safety is not the same as luxury. Human attention does not have to belong exclusively to boutique clinics. Music, familiarity, choice, preparation, continuity, quiet and skilled accompaniment might be designed into public care—but only if they are treated as part of the intervention rather than decoration surrounding it.</p><p>The relevant unit may not be a pill.</p><p>It may be an encounter.</p><p>And that raises a different set of research questions.</p><p>What is the smallest context that still protects the person and supports the possibility?</p><p>Which parts must be human?</p><p>Which can be shared?</p><p>Does the patient need one continuous companion, or can trust be held by a team?</p><p>Can community settings provide something a medical suite cannot?</p><p>What happens when the music belongs to the institution rather than the person?</p><p>How much of a therapeutic result comes from what occurs during the chemically altered hours, and how much from what happens before and after them?</p><p>Who pays for a room when the room is part of the medicine?</p><p>These are not findings from the Monash study.</p><p>They are questions its finding now allows.</p><p>There is a regulatory problem here too.</p><p>Regulation prefers an object.</p><p>A compound can be purified. A dose can be measured. A capsule can be made identical to the one before it. Manufacturing standards can be inspected and adverse events counted.</p><p>An encounter is harder.</p><p>It contains tone of voice, duration, expectation, memory, architecture, music, silence, training, trust and the unrepeatable condition of the person who arrived that morning.</p><p>If treatment depends partly on those things, what exactly should be approved?</p><p>The molecule?</p><p>The protocol?</p><p>The room?</p><p>The relationship?</p><p>The whole sequence?</p><p>And if the whole sequence matters, who owns it? Who is allowed to provide it? Who decides which parts are medically necessary and which are optional comforts?</p><p>The ordinary machinery of access—licensing, reimbursement, staffing, clinic design—may shape the treatment before most patients ever encounter the drug.</p><p>The compound may open the brain to context.</p><p>The health system will decide which context is available to enter.</p><p>There is something almost comic about discovering the room inside a brain scan.</p><p>The participant enters the machine alone. The scanner records activity beneath the skull. The resulting image appears to belong entirely to the individual: one brain, one dose, one set of coloured networks.</p><p>But the music is there.</p><p>The movie is there.</p><p>The meditation is there.</p><p>The surrounding world has crossed the apparent border and become visible in the trajectory.</p><p>Not as a metaphor.</p><p>As data.</p><p>The discovery does not tell us that psilocybin therapy works, for whom it works, or how its promise should be distributed. It does not settle whether these experiences heal, destabilize or sometimes do both. It does not make the coming clinical and civic choices easier.</p><p>It makes one simplification harder.</p><p>We can no longer be quite as certain that the medicine ends where the molecule ends.</p><p>After the participant leaves, the treatment room looks empty again.</p><p>A chair. Headphones. A screen. The ordinary quiet after an unusual afternoon.</p><p>But perhaps empty is the wrong word.</p><p>The room has already entered the record.</p><p>The question is no longer only what psilocybin does to a brain.</p><p>It is what becomes possible—and what becomes dangerous—once the brain can no longer keep the room outside.</p><p>The science tether</p><p><strong>What was demonstrated:</strong> Sixty-two psychedelic-naive healthy adults underwent fMRI and EEG during rest, meditation, music and a movie, before and during acute psilocybin effects. Machine-learning analysis found structured brain dynamics that differed by context. Stronger context alignment was associated with positively felt self- and boundary-dissolving experiences and with next-day mindset change.</p><p><strong>What was not demonstrated:</strong> The study was not a clinical treatment trial. It did not establish long-term benefit, determine an ideal therapeutic setting, test therapist presence or compare private and public delivery models.</p><p><strong>The opening explored here:</strong> If context participates in the response rather than merely surrounding it, access to the molecule may not equal access to the treatment. Not a typo. Finland calculates traffic fines from income, and Vanjoki had a lot of it.</p><p>Here is another kind of number, the one that never makes headlines: the $200 fine that means a missed rent payment. The $80 ticket that turns into a suspended licence, which turns into a lost shift, which turns into worse. Nobody writes an article about that one. It just happens, quietly, to somebody, most days, in most cities.</p><p>Same infraction. Same law. Two entirely different planets, depending only on what was already in your bank account before you broke it.</p><p>Innovation is not always a device. Sometimes it is a change in what a system counts. Sometimes it is a different unit of consequence. This is the first in a new Innovation Toronto series exploring real openings — scientific, civic, technological, social — that ask not only what might be built, but what might be changed by building differently</p><p>Money is either punitive or meaningless, depending on circumstance. There’s no version of a flat fine that’s fair to both people in that sentence, because the number never changes and what it costs always does.</p><p>Finland’s already found half an answer. Since the 1920s, fines there scale to income — divide daily earnings roughly in half, multiply by how far over the line you were. It’s why Vanjoki’s ticket has an extra zero yours wouldn’t. Several other countries have followed since. It works, more or less, at making the sting proportional instead of arbitrary.</p><p>But it has a quiet flaw: it needs your income defined, and defined income is exactly the kind of thing that bends around a good accountant. The same resources that help someone win almost any other dispute also help them argue their fine base down. Money finds its way back in through the paperwork.</p><p>So here’s the wonder: what if the unit wasn’t money at all? What if it was time?</p><p>Everyone has the same twenty-four hours in a day. Not the same value in every hour — an hour costs a surgeon differently than it costs someone between jobs — but you can’t hide your hours the way you can restructure your income. There’s no offshore account for Tuesday afternoon.</p><p>A fine paid in hours spent on public projects. Not community service as an afterthought for people who can’t pay — the actual, default currency, for everyone, rich or not. Fix the trail. Paint the community centre. Clear the ditch that floods every spring.</p><p>Here’s where I think the emphasis actually wants to sit, the longer I turn this over: leveling the fine might not be the important part at all. The important part might be the stranger.</p><p>In 2022, Raj Chetty and a team of researchers analyzed 21 billion Facebook friendships, mapped by zip code, against IRS income records — the largest study of its kind ever attempted. They were hunting for what actually predicts whether a poor kid grows up to escape poverty. They tested the usual suspects: school quality, family structure, neighbourhood inequality, racial segregation. One factor beat all of them, by a wide margin — how many of a child’s friends, growing up, came from a different economic class than they did. They called it economic connectedness, and it was strong enough to make most of the traditional explanations look almost beside the point.</p><p>The detail that matters most for this idea: it wasn’t proximity doing the work. Living near wealthier people, attending a well-funded school, sharing a zip code with a mixed-income population — none of that moved the needle much on its own. What predicted mobility was actual interaction. Knowing them. Being friends with them. Contact, not co-location.</p><p>Which is precisely the shape of a work crew, and not the shape of a mixed-income neighbourhood where two households share a postal code and never speak. Social psychologists have understood the mechanics of this since the 1950s — contact between people from different backgrounds only closes distance under specific conditions: equal status, a shared task, real cooperation, something institutional backing the setup. A fine served shoulder to shoulder with a stranger hits all four by accident, just by being built the way it’s built.</p><p>We already run one small, unremarked version of this, so quietly most people never notice how strange it actually is: jury duty. One of the last places in modern life where the law simply doesn’t check your tax bracket — a surgeon and a warehouse worker, one vote each, deliberating as functional equals because the summons doesn’t care what either of them does for a living. Nobody thinks of jury duty as a social experiment. It’s been running as one for centuries.</p><p>Here’s the speculative part, and I want to flag it clearly as exactly that: nobody’s built this at the scale I’m imagining, so nobody actually knows what it would do. But if Chetty’s finding holds — that interaction is the active ingredient, not proximity — then a fine paid in shared hours isn’t only a fairer punishment. It’s a delivery mechanism for the single strongest lever on mobility researchers have found yet, running quietly in the background of ordinary civic life, asking nobody to volunteer for anything.</p><p>Traffic offences might be the ideal entry point, for a reason worth saying out loud: speeding doesn’t sort by income the way most studied offences do. Rich people speed. Poor people speed. Nearly everyone does it eventually. A system built around it wouldn’t only reach people already struggling. It would, sooner or later, reach almost everyone — including people who’d otherwise go their whole lives without spending an unstructured afternoon anywhere near someone outside their own bracket.</p><p>It wouldn’t happen automatically, and that’s worth being honest about too. A crew working in parallel instead of together, or hours that could somehow be bought out or delegated, wouldn’t produce any of this — it would just be community service with extra paperwork. Chetty’s finding is specific: contact, not co-location. Whatever this became would have to be built for people to actually work together, not merely occupy the same site. And probably not from one afternoon, either — what might really matter is the ambient, repeated, unremarkable fact of it happening across a whole population, year after year. Less a single dramatic fix than a slow kind of infrastructure for something that’s been quietly going missing from a lot of people’s lives: an ordinary reason to spend real time with someone whose life doesn’t look like yours.</p><p>A fine takes something and gives nothing back. A finished bench in the park is still there next spring. That’s not nothing either.</p><p>The honest catch: cities collect real money from fines, and some of that would go away. For most places it’s a smaller number than you’d guess — a rounding error against the total budget. But there are exceptions, and they’re instructive ones: towns that came to lean on ticket revenue so heavily it started shaping who got pulled over and why, not how safely anyone was driving. Losing that particular kind of money isn’t really a loss. It’s removing the thing that was bending the whole system sideways in the first place — the bad kind of sideways, not the good kind.</p><p>None of this is proven, and it hasn’t been tried anywhere near the scale I’m describing. Maybe it wouldn’t hold up. Maybe the surgeon’s hour really is worth arguing about, the same way the accountant’s income statement is now.</p><p>Right now, the fine a wealthy person pays and the fine a poor person pays for the identical mistake aren’t measuring the same thing at all. One is asking <em>can you afford this</em>, and pretending it’s asking <em>did you do this</em>. Time doesn’t have that problem. That’s reason enough on its own.</p><p>But it’s not actually the reason I keep coming back to this. It’s the stranger with the shovel. It’s the version of a place where an ordinary Tuesday afternoon, for no noble reason whatsoever — just because you were doing twenty over on your way to work — puts you next to somebody you’d otherwise have spent a whole life quietly managing not to meet.</p><p>I wonder what that would do to a place, given a few decades. I wonder if we’re only one generation of speeding tickets away from finding out.</p> <br/><br/>This is a public episode.
